IT MATTERS:

It sets the tone for the season. And after spanking them like a red-headed stepchild last year, losing that game would hurt the Vols' confidence heading towards an early season and tough SEC opener.

IT MATTERS NOT:

Of all your games this year, it is actually the one that means the least. If you lose it, it has no bearing on the SEC race, whatsoever and should you win 12 in a row after that and find yourself in Atlanta, odds are still pretty good that you'd be playing for a spot in the national title game.

this sounds familiar?

it's all about perspective LG.......losing or winning that game may not have any bearing no how bad or good the season winds up being.

last year was a good example......thrash 'em, end up 9-4 and disappointed in the end.

this year???? Let's just say, i'd rather win and take my chances on the other 11 games........:pno need to start off on a bad foot and wonder game to game......

What concerns me is that we have 3, maybe 4 teams on our schedule that would probably beat Cal. Losing to them would make me weary of what might be coming, especially with road trips to UF and Bama.

Agreed that the national significance of the game is virtually nil.

I agree that it could hurt the team mentally to lose much more than help the team reach their goals, record-wise.

Reminds me of the renewed Miami-FSU series a couple of years back. First game. Huge expectations for both teams. Winner to be annointed favorite to reach the national title finale.

The game sucked. The teams sucked. Neither was in the title hunt at the end of September.

1. The chances of losing to Cal and the prodeeding to run the table are roughly equivalent to the odds of Teddyhead winning a Nobel Prize for Literature.
2. Even if they did, it wouldn't matter. USC and the OU-Texas winner are both going undefeated.

What "renewal" are you talking about? The "U" and FSU have played continuously for the last 25+ years. It's the University of Florida-Cowardice who continually ducks the 'Canes.

I still think SC losses a game, but I agree 100% with your OU-Texas prediction.

Nebraska WILL beat USC. Sam Keller will be ALl-Big 12 and they have a balance offense. their defense loses Carriker, but they still have Ruud and some good pieces.
