Ive been going to games since the mid 1960s, and got my first season ticket for my 12th birthday in 1968 so Ive pretty much seen it all....the good, bad, and ugly. Saw us beat Penn St. in the first night game at Neyland in 1972. Went to UT during Johnny's early years when we were pretty bad. Saw the steady improvement during the mid/lates 80s (but for 1988) to the point where we were SEC contenders year in and year out (1985 and back to back champs in 1989 and 1990) and in the national picture when Fulmer took over in 1993. He took us to the next level where we competed for SEC East titles most every year, winning back to back in 1997 and 1998 and won the first BCS NC in 1998. A slow decline in recruiting combined with some questionable coaching hires/nonhires, and bad luck led us to a coaching change in 2008 that most objective observers felt was probably needed BUT very poorly handled by our AD. Then his hire of the youthful, brash, self proclaimed So.Calif kid was bold, but ill-fated and misguided, which further set the program back. His next hire was nearly as bold, and risky but in a totally different direction. DD had the training, the pedigree, but not the record as a head coach. His recruiting, given the circumstances, has been good, really very good. His hires have been bold and he has not been afraid to mix it up in that regard (in contrast to Phil who's only real attempt to mix it up likely helped get him fired (Dave Clawson)). So objective observers thought that this was the year that the jury would began real deliberatons on the verdict on our current coach. By years end the verdict would likely be in, or it would be fairly clear what it would be. Hopes were very high based on the first two games, and the fact that Fla. appeared to be beatable based on last year and what was seen so far this year. However, those hopes faded into the night in a span of about five minutes of action last night when the Gators Stood Up and the Vols pretty much Laid Down. You could see the body language, on both sides of the ball and special teams, it was obvious that the Vols let one or two plays completely take all the wind out of their sails. The fight was gone from them. They were done for the night.
What happened and Why? Well, with the game very much on the line and in doubt, during those few critical minutes when it mattered most---- Florida was just better in all facets of the game when it mattered. They ran better; caught better, threw better, schemed better, tackled better, kicked better, played harder, with more focus, played smarter, with more heart, and determination, all on the road in front of 100K hostile fans.......The last 20 minutes of the game looked nothing like the first 40. Was it conditioning, inexperience or lack of depth?
Our coach said before the year that those excuses would not be valid ones this year, and I think our AD and fanbase will hold him to it. Is Florida really that good and it just took them that long to get their stride and show it? Well maybe, and time will tell us that answer. Are we lacking in leadership on all levels?
Why does a team get so deflated so quickly when it gets down a little? Do they not know that when the going gets tough, the tough get going? Look at Fla...they faked the punt and got stuffed, down a score and defending on their own end of field.....what did they do......did they let that misfire get them down......No they put on more steam and freightrained us into the night, literally running us out of our own stadium......

I dont pretend to know any of the answers, but I think I know most of the questions. Which leads me to my assessment of where we are at this point:
Dooley must regroup his team, and beat Akron convincingly; then either beat Miss St or GA on the road.
I think we should be able to handle Akron even though I expect us to struggle some and be flat. If we could somehow find a way to beat UGA, it would give this team, these coaches, some refound mojo going into Miss St, and would take some of the sting out of last night. That is a tall order, and Im not sure this team and these coaches are up to it based on what I saw last night in the last 20 minutes; I think the game is 60 minutes long in Athens, not 40. Lose to GA and then Miss St becomes a must win in my opinion for DD to salvage a decent season and his job. If we go into the Ala game 0-3 in the conference, we will be 0-5 coming out of the SC game, and I dont see DD surviving past this year.
I really like DD and hope he can turn us around. We have been in the valley too long. He is entering a three game stretch that will determine his destiny. Can he rally this team to win on the road against UGA and/or Miss St? In my opinion his coaching life at UT depends on it.............

Good post. What scares me is the way we lost, to which you alluded. Unlike years past, we had the talent to win last night. We beat ourselves with poor play-calling, tactical adjustments, and attitudes. That doesn't bode well for a schedule that just gets tougher through October.

This almost makes me excited for the rest of the season. Good post! We have to win two out of the next 4 SEC games to salvage this season or we will be lucky to be 6-6. Go VOLS

Still to early to give up on this season!
Gators could be developing into a great team. They have great talent. They are in the top 5 in recruiting every year. On the other hand, if the gators are not a great team, Vols could be in for a long season. I hope we learn fast from of D's mistakes and become a good team on D.

I lied to myself in the past and I'm done doing it. Dooley needs to go. The sooner he's gone the sooner we'll be on track to a better program.

Look at yourself in the mirror and ask, can Dooley beat MSU or UGA? You know the answer, don't be afraid to tell yourself the truth.

Dooley has never won a game he wasn't suppose too. And he lost games he has no business losing.

Gaors do have a boat load of talent. With less Talent you must out Coach. we will never do that with Dooley

Good post. It's just good to see somebody post a well thought out opinion and not just making an @$$ out of themselves.

The turning point in the game was Bray's intentional grounding call when UF went for the fake punt. He is and has always been the issue during the second half.

Well thought out post. This is the season that Dooley has to show improvement. that in my mind means beating either GA, FL, UA, or SC. I was optimiistic going into this season, with a good QB and experienced OL. Winning one of those games UT can finish 9-3. A favorable schedule.

The fact UK lost to WKU yesterday, the same team that beat UT last game of the season isn't comforting. I have listened to the coaching staff during fall practice state they have been focusing on improving the running game for 3 years. I don't understand how it can continue to be as bad as it is if this has been a focus of improvement. Maybe the coaching changes have hurt. But Dooley and the OC have been in place 3 years.

I agree the intentional grounding call was huge and in hindsight was the beginning of the end last night. The thing was the route the receiver ran had him open on a skinny post type route but Bray just threw it away out in the flat where no one was. He was under pressure. It was obvious the receiver was not running the short out, he was running a downfield route. So why didnt Tyler see that? Mentally TB seemed to let down from that point on, and the receivers lost their focus, dropping some balls that could have turned the tide back in our favor. Perhaps Fla's physicality in their coverage took its toll on our receivers. One thing is for sure, we better figure it out because it will take four quarter efforts to even have a chance to win at GA and Miss St.

Yes it is hard to imagine us beating UGA, and I agree with OP, the next 3 games are critical for Dooley
IMO.

I have lost all confidence in TB, if DD doesn't get this figured out quick we could be on the way to another trainwreck like last season. If that happens then I don't see how anyone can defend our coach any longer. It is time for DD to show whether he has what it takes to be the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers.

I don't care about Akron and Troy. That's just stats padding. I don't even care about the W-L record this year. I care about beating rivals and giving the top teams in the SEC a tough, hard-fought game for four full quarters. The games that matter most are UGA, Bama and SCAR.

We will not be favored in any of those games, and that's where we see if we can play big boy ball or if we're going to hang around the basement of the SEC until we're ready to make some hard choices.

#2 USC and Kiffin lost to #21 Stanford

#23 Tennessee and Dooley lost to #18 Florida

Need some perspective?

Dooley is the one who said it matters how the team responds to adversity. Well this team crawled up in a ball in the corner and started sucking its thumb. this team has the depth and conditioning to play 4 quarters. But from top to bottom this team mentally wears pampers. And that trickles down from the top.

Well, it just MIGHT bode well for us. I think that we are a LOT better this year. I think that the breaks went against us. I think that by being so improved that these boys could use the early season reality check and see, first-hand, how a team is SUPPOSED to handle adversity. Am I sure? No. Do I hope? Yes.

Trickles down from the QB too

Bray should be benched imo - Worley can play & lead and should get a chance to show it

Just my opinion but you can't go through coaches every 3 yrs. If we stay on that route we will never be back on top. You have to show some stability in a program.

Bray is a very good qb and still needs time to grow the guy has not even completed a full season yet.Bray will put up insane numbers this year and we will win alot of games we will not go undefeated but who the hell thought we would.we got a good team and a coach that might just get this team a big win we need

It's true that we can't keep changing coaches. It's also true that refusing to admit a mistake doesn't make it any less of a mistake. Rock meet hard place.

What I see missing is any type of leadership!!! When Bray got the IG penalty he dropped his head and that was it!! He was done!!! Where is the coach or leader getting these guys back in the game?? Where is the Al Wilson, Peyton,Andy Kelly or all of the great players in the past to motivate these guys?? It shouldnt be hard to get your head back in the game when something goes wrong its in the pre game maxims!!!The coaching staff lacks in leadership, motivation and cant make a second half adjustment to save their lives!!!

NVR mind Bray sucks 3 games in. 900yards 8tds completes %63.8 of his passes that's just garbage numbers.

the biggest problem last night was the offensive play calling. (yes d gave up three big plays.) as discussed yesterday the dbs played press, allowing the line to get to bray, and threw the timing off. also, as discussed, when running press it is important to do the quick slants, quick outs and hitches, none of which happend. the ran deep ins, deep posts, and go routes. very very dumb going for the home run everytime. hence, the gators pass interfered or held just as we knew, and it prevented anything happening. chaney failed.
