that tx/ttu game last night was great. good way to cap off an otherwise "eh" college football saturday.

but what made it interesting is the jockeying that will now take place for the top 5 heading in to next week.

My top 10:

1. Alabama
2. Penn State
3. Texas Tech
4. Texas
5. Florida
6. Oklahoma
7. Oklahoma St.
8. USC
9. Ohio state
10. Boise State

is there really any debate at this point as to which conf is the best this year?

the big 12 is far and away the best this year. i'll concede the defensive struggles, but will only stipulate there isn't a league that executes better offensively in america in 2008. QB, WR, O line.....the conf. is literally 5-6 teams deep with great off skill players.

you look at the SEC and some very good, even supposedly great defenses are kind of washed out by some very mediocre offenses.....

LSU and SC are widely considered to have great defenses.........LSU has been torched for 50+ twice this year. SC has accumilated their defensive stats up to this point by play who exactly?

anyway....the eyeball test alone....i give the big 12 kudos, they've got it going on this year.

There is no way that TX could play with UF or USC. The defenses across the board in the Big 12 are unbelievably weak.

Their conference is probably better than the SEC at the top, but after those first 4, it's a lot of Vandy / Arky / UT 08 quality.

I saw that Mike Leach, showing his true Halloween spirit, went to the game as Vince Gill last night.

i think TX, OK, OK St and TX T would give any/every team in the SEC fits just because of how good they are offensively. Mizzou would probalby give everyone but FL and Bama fits.

as far as i can see, FL and Bama are the only two SEC teams that i could see beating any of the top 4 or 5 of the big 12. Hell, i think KS would give the other ten teams in the SEC a run for their money. GA's defense is/was overrated. SC, TN and Auburn all play good defense, but none of them have an offense that could keep up. the rest are mediocre everywhere. Bottom line, as i see it, FL is the only team in the SEC that has an offense that's really capable of keeping pace with a TTU, TX or OU.

:eek:lol: how much you want to bet there's a "mike leach for coach at TN" thread sometime this week?

it helps that those offenses are playing against sludge piles on a weekly basis.

TX's AA DE went out last night and the pressure actually got better on the QB, but was generally atrocious all night. Harrell had more time to throw the ball than anyone I've ever seen. McCoy had considerable time as well, but the commentators were talking about how he was beaten about.

I think UF and Alabama roll everyone in that conference and USC rolls them all.

USC's defense, save the one game, is monstrous.

i'll admit i was kind of surprised at that too, but everytime TX blitzed, TT had an answer.....made TX only bring 4 most of the night, maybe 5. plus alot of the plays were those stop routes and slants, esp on the medium down and distance. TTU ran just enough to keep them honest. it was a great game plan, and more importantly, they executed it.

i do agree that defenses in the big 12 aren't what i'd call solid, even traditionally good defenses like OU and TX are struggling, especially in coverage.

but when you watch most of these offenses, they do execute what they are trying to do....they don't make mistakes by and large, and they have speed. The qb's are accurate (the completion % for some of these qb's is ridiculous....it'd be one thing if they were putting up these monster yardage numbers with a 50%-60% completion....but 70%+? that's just good), and the WR don't drop the ball.....and they don't turnover the ball a great deal.

"roll" isn't the word i'd use, but i still say FL is the only team in the SEC that could keep up offensively....and they have a better defense than any of those teams.....

Bama might slow them down, some, cause they do play good defense, but i dont' see Bama out scoring TX, OU, TTU, OK ST, etc....

I've always thought Leach bears a resemblance to Vince Gill. It might be confusing to have two guys looking alike roaming Tennessee. :p
