I spoke with one of Donnie Tyndall’s college teammates, Robbie O’Bryan, over the summer to get an inside look at Tyndall as both a person and a basketball coach. O’Bryan not only played with Tyndall at Morehead State, he also spent multiple years as an assistant coach at several college programs. His coaching career saw him make stops at Milligan College, Wabash Valley Community College, Lee University and Winthrop (where he served as an assistant on Gregg Marshall’s staff).

...Here’s what he had to say about Donnie Tyndall.

This is a fantastic quote and a reason I'm looking forward to Tennessee basketball this year!

Q: What is one of his biggest strengths as a coach?

A: One of his greatest aspects as a coach is his ability to get his players to play as hard as they can. You won’t find many coaches in the country that get their teams to play as hard and with as much toughness as Donnie Tyndall. His teams will be tougher than any team in the country. His teams take on his attitude. They reflect his toughness on the court.

I can't wait to see what he can do with the "trouble makers" on this year's squad. If he can get the most out BigDom and Mostella then we could actually have a good year.

I agree, reminds me a lot of Pearl in that sense, gets every bit of talent out of his guys or they just won't play.

The hesitation I have is that you seem to hear that about a lot of coaches, and it doesn't always turn out to be true, hoping it is in this case.

I mean I guess, but Donnie Tyndall has a good reputation among the coaching carousel for being a hard-nosed guy. That's how Donnie is. You've said it yourself, Donnie's been successful everywhere he's been as long as he sticks to the formula for success.

Absolutely, but the question remains will that formula work at a higher level.

Hopefully we see a tougher breed

So you mean a real insider. Not some guy who goes on internet message boards, using a pseudonym, to impress folks with his fake insider knowledge.

Its still early on, but I think he is already showing that it does work. I also think there have been enough testimonials this time, to believe that he and his staff will go all out. It is not like he just now stepped up his game. He has supposedly always been this way.

What game have we won that shows it work, I'm not following?

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood what you were saying. I was thinking about the work ethic (and people-person) part (from the article), and how that has worked so well when it appeared that he had an impossible situation in recruiting, and he came out smelling like roses.
