With the ups and downs of this season it has been extremely frustrating for myself and many others. Though that was all to be outdone in the final 12 seconds of this game. Tennessee that shot 28% from the field and had their worst performance in Tampa still somehow had an opportunity to win this game at the end.....well actually 3 chances.
I'm amazed at the lack of basketball IQ in the two inbound turnovers. First of all its a SET PLAY OUT OF A TIMEOUT. Where everyone is on the same page. They ran that same inbounds play that we have ran all year I believe the squad calls it "1". They line up 4 across flat on the baseline. JP and Wayne are on the blocks. The both pop high post and JP sets a screen for chism that comes to the ball side block. I've got about 5 problems with this particular play.
1) The play only has one option. If Chism comes off and is covered like he was the play is dead. Now it is up to players to break on their own and get the ball. Most good inbounds plays in college have at least 3 options.
2) You don't run an inbounds play that has been scouted in that situation. You draw something up or at least run something you haven't ran in that game. You tell your squad if nothing develops we have a timeout.
3) as an inbounder...especially a veteran leader-Tyler smith. You should know you have a clock in your head.As soon as the referee hands you the ball you start....one thousand one...one thousand two...etc..when you get to 4 and nothing is there you call T.O.
4) As a coach you can't depend on your players to make good decisions in pressure situations. Bruce was watching the play and the count unlike Tyler and could have called a time out with head official tony green right in front of him.
I have never said a bad word about cbp. I am proud to say he is the coach of our team and always will be. Yet in this instance there is no excuse. It was bad coaching and bad execution.
