Can Dooley get it done?

There's been a thousand reasons repeatedly rehashed on this forum for why he can't. Some of them involve objective analysis (0 for whatever). Some of them are just emotional tirades.

While there's not a whole lot of positives to consider, I'm trying to think of a few, in case Hart decides to stick with Dooley (which might be the case if there is no "home-run" hire willing and able to replace him).

So here are some positives, objectively noted:

1. O-line. Horrendous O-line play last year. But this year our O-line is playing fantastic (very few sacks, almost double in run production).

2. Super-Sophs. A.J. Johnson, Antonio Richardson, and Brian Randolph (before his injury - how significant his loss was to our secondary is almost incalculable). These are players who have been statistically productive and whom Dooley recruited and signed. Curt Maggit would likely be here as well, if he didn't have turf toe and a nagging shoulder injury. I would not call Devrin Young, Marlin Lane, and Justin Coleman super-sophs, but they've been productive enough on the field to show some promise.

3. Juco Studs. Cordarrelle Patterson and Daniel McCullers were BIG gets for us. Patterson is the most exciting player we've had here in years (and he didn't start practicing with the team until August). Getting two productive jucos in one year shows Dooley can find elite talent in the juco ranks.

4. Some really good hires in the off-season. Jay Graham and Sam Pittman.

5. Heart. I can't imagine how it feels to be these players who have given their time, sweat, blood, and tears for this season, only to be 0-5 in the SEC. But they haven't given up as the season has worn on, and played their guts out against South Carolina on Saturday.

I'm completely aware that the list of objective negatives are longer. No need to state those. They've been said over and over and over again on countless threads.

But what positives are we missing, just to be fair?

The post has merit. Everyone is just pissed off. We did not hire good secondary coaches. Dooley may quit after the season , or tomorrow. you never know

blah blah blah Dooley sucks give me Gruden and lets go win!

Can't wait to see what other intelligent posts you have to offer to this board.

Anyways OP, great post.

I would also say breakout seniors have been a great positive so far. Namely ZRo. Glad to see he has finally found his game. Rivera is a monster, so is Bohannon. If you're going to blame Dooley for every player we have that is struggling this season, then you have to also give him credit for the ones that have obviously been coached up.

Also the place-kicking game has shown great improvement. Been a while since we missed one iirc.

He came into the worst job you could think of. He was the third coach in three years. The man you worship, Jon Gruden, wouldn't have this program turned around yet. I'm frustrated like everyone else but you have to be reasonable in this situation.

Thanks Chatt-Town. Can't believe I forgot about ZRo.

6. Zach Rogers. Improvement from last year to this year has been huge.

Agreed. My fear is that with the (justifiable) disappointment and frustration we have with our program right now, we make a move that is for another coach who isn't a guaranteed home-run or grand-slam.

I have a friend who is a huge Texas fan and he tells me that on one of their message boards, which are abuzz with "fire Mack Brown" talk, many people keep saying, "But look at Tennessee...Are we sure the next guy is going to be a big step forward".

I see positives in Dooley, but I can also see the frustrations.

No, Jon Gruden may not have had this turned around but I am real, real confident that we would have won at least half of the close games that we lost this season.

Sitting at 3 - 5, had we beat UGA, (a close game) and USC ( a close game) and beaten Miss State (a close game) but lost to Florida and Alabama, we would be in much better shape. those are the games that I feel Gruden could have coached us to wins in......

Dooley has improved the program but when we are so close to getting over the edge, yet we lose the close games by the slimmest of margins, people get frustrated.

I am really going to enjoy the "lack" of post from all the negative nacys out there when CDD comes back for 2013. My hope is all of them will get so pissed, they go back to being Bammers with Finnebaughm.

This time next year we will all be talking about how things have really turned around for Dooley and the Vols, and we will be wondering how soon will UT be in the hunt for a national championship.

That's an indictment of Dooley's tenure not an endorsement of his continued employment.

7. Team speed. While our starting secondary is still slow as molasses in winter (but with some frosh wheels in the waiting - i.e. Gray, Bonner), overall, I think our team speed has greatly improved. Patterson has zip. Pig CAN fly. Raijon Neal is way faster than Tauren Poole. Justin Hunter would leave Gerald Jones in the dust. Every one of our linebackers is faster than Nick Reveiz was (love that guy, though). Trending right direction here.

Actually, they weren't saying this directly about Dooley, but about how firing Fulmer led to instability in the program (i.e. Kiffin leaving abruptly, player transfers, recruiting fall-out). No one in Texas really cares about or thinks about Dooley (for obvious reasons).
