Amazon Officially Pulls out of NYC for HQ2

I don't think it's safe to assume the employee will be replaced by a new, on-location employee. Not in today's economy.
I don’t think it’s safe to assume Amazon will poach thousands of employees who won’t be replaced. They aren’t hiring obsoleting positions, they’re going to be hiring coders, logistics, finance, etc. They will be high demand jobs that will need to be replaced.

I heard on the radio today that it was to be 25,000 jobs that averaged $150,000 each.

You know wherever it ends up, someone will be doing their homework on how much money NY lost and use that against AOC in the next election.

Now, whether her voters care is another matter entirely.

Also wherever it ends up they will still receive some sort of incentive package from that state. It works that way with virtually every company in every state. It may be moot though because I read where they are just nixing the new facility altogether.

Doubt it. Someone, somewhere will give them a great deal and they'll build it.

If they actually do move forward I’m sure of it. What’s sad is I’ve actually worked with multiple people from NY who left due to taxes, cost of living, and lack of jobs.

You have to understand her position. People making $150k aren’t going to be gung ho for socialism. She doesn’t want them voting against her.

A talking point I'm sure whomever challenges her in 2020 will bring up.

Let's hope all common sense hasn't been lost in NYC.

That's the story I want to hear. How do her constituents feel?

Might not keep her from winning re-election, but could be a drag if she goes for a Senate seat.

There is opportunity cost. Amazon moving in pushes other businesses (that would be paying full taxes) out. It's not like Amazon is going to be completely staffed by unemployed NYers, creating this huge boon to the city. They'll bring in some outsiders, but Amazon is largely going to be poaching employees from existing NY businesses (with an unfair tax advantage). These are like stadium deals for cities...the forecasts are ********.

Why is Amazon pushing businesses out?

Yes some employees will be poached but that opens positions for others in the area.

They are not like stadium deals in that those typically include the city actually paying for the construction.

The bulk of the incentives are freedom from taxes (income/property). Yes it sucks for local businesses that don't get those deals but it's not as if it is money coming out of tax revenues. I see all sorts of "experts" misrepresent this. The only part of the $3B that is now saved by Amazon not coming is directly outlays to build infrastructure but even infrastructure has economic benefits so it would be some fraction of that outlay.

OTOH even if Amazon projections didn't materialize it would result in a net increase in tax revenue rather than a loss.

I understand (but don't share) the "fairness™" argument whereby Amazon gets a better deal than existing companies. The argument that forgone tax revenue from Amazon represents a reduction in revenue is absolute bunk.

They're going to be hiring for all kinds of skills. Most would be replaced, just not necessarily by new employees in NY (as I said). Roles will be consolidated, jobs will be given to remote employees, outsourced to 3rd parties, etc.

A web services company I worked for had an office in Utah an office in Arizona. A few key people in Utah left the company and they closed the Utah office, and some of us moved to AZ (others found new jobs).

Do you think net tax receipts would be higher with the Amazon deal or without it?

Meh, its just the State Capital....

Green hills, belle meade, inner Davidson county highly democratic. Outside area of Davidson country republican. You can see breakdowns from last vote on transit and how it flips fast outside of Nashville proper.

Summer hard right.
Williamson and Wilson hard right.
Rutherford is a mix but leans right.

The north and northwest are moving in at light speed to the suburbs but mostly are leaning right and don’t want high taxes here.
