Yes we had a bad game offensively but this was same offense that rushed for UT's record high rushing yards last season. They also scored average 35 points a game. They had some bad moments last season but the panic around here is so amazing.
Guys calling Debord 'synchronized swimming' reservation maker and other names is stupid. Dude just lead us to one of the best offensive seasons in a long time.
WRs are a concern but I do not doubt our ability to score points and/or get good OL play !!

Not the record.

1951: 3,068 yds
2015: 2,908 yds

I'm glad it happened with App State so it won't happen with anyone else this year. Almost every team every year gas games like that.

I sure hope that we got the bad game over right away, no room for error moving forward. Might get away with so-so play against Ohio, but that would be bad considering who's next.

Don't know why it's "if," and don't know why sad and silly are capitalized. This is the same offense being executed by a slightly different team, which gives me reason to believe that the App St. game was a clearing of the throat, so to speak. It's disconcerting that we played as poorly offensively as we did against what should be one of our easier opponents this year, and anyone who just brushes that off is wearing orange-tinted glasses so thick they should be replaced with the bottom of Coke bottles. There's nothing reassuring about this win, but there's nothing devastating about it either--because, you know, we won. If this is an aberration, we will all know by Florida, if not sooner. But no one wants to start out with a win on a fumble recovery in the endzone in overtime against a weaker opponent, who looked for much of the game to be all the equal of us. I hope to see a big swing upwards at BMS, but none of the offensive question marks were answered on Thursday. I truly hope some of them will be on Saturday.

The biggest concern is just the offensive line's inconsistency. If we were rushing the ball like crazy and we had a couple miscues on offense and unusual turnovers I don't think it would haven't been that bad, but not getting a consistent push is worrisome.

It looked like Richmond was the only one that showed up to play

I still can't believe how bad Thomas, Weisman, and Robertson looked and they were supposed to be the strength of this line. I just hope Butch lets Jones play. He is the best nasty mauler we got by a country mile imo

I'm willing to give those guys a pass because all three have shown they are better than the performance they put on last Thursday.

My issue is the "Well, those are my guys so let's go with them." I hate that philosophy. Sometimes guys have bad days. Those three did. Don't sub all of them out, but maybe get Jones a series or two to let those guys clear their heads and get a breather. It's silly we have depth now and aren't using it.

This team earned every bit of the scrutiny theyre getting. Like Butch said, this year has nothing to do with last year. So far, team 120 is 1-0 with a very ugly win against an inferior team. It is what it is.

Didn't they only play 10 games back then? I would be more interested in yards per game. Also the forward pass was nowhere near as used then as it is now.

I'd wager that far fewer plays were run per game in 1951. That would offset some of the discrepancy due to different eras of run/pass mix.

And that is exactly why people are upset at the performance from last week.

Ya know...you're RIGHT OP...

We get so caught up here on ACTUAL game performances...

That we FORGET that preseason/pre game...that Tennessee is gonna "Whipdeyazz!" Just 'cause folks SAY so...the REAL game execution doesn't REALLY matter.

Thanks for reminding everyone!

Couldnt agree more op. We will be fine I think, we just need to bring our A game, and let Dobbs be Dobbs. Seems to me when the other team has to worry about him running is when hurd and the passing game opens up. Jmo

I really think the play-calling was not vanilla, by plan -- I can only suppose DeBord really didn't have anything else to use.

Rather than concealing what we have, DeBord revealed what we have (a weak OL, with those starters, and a qb who will not run early in the game/until in the hole points-wise).

I do not know where this vanilla-run / watered-down offense theory started, but I just can't believe it, unless it comes from the words of Staff.

Maybe Alabama was also actually running a watered-down offense last week -- so we can expect them to be 2x as competitive offensively 3rd sat oct, because they were hiding the O strengths just like Tenn did ??

panic? eh. questions? plenty. the problem that game presents is that it validates all the "i'll believe it when i see it" folks, self included. no one saw anything from that game that said "oh yeah, i believe".

that's the problem. and it will continue to be until we see differently.

the good news, still plenty of opportunities for that to happen. starting Saturday.

the bad news, in a one game sample, it left nothing to be desired.

After watching this offense for 3 years, its never been that effective against top SEC teams. We have had to rely on the defense to keep it close. It will be the same this season. 21 points against top competition 45 against weaker teams. I believe last week was a by-product of the non-hitting practices designed to reduce injury.

OP - how could you not panic is the better question. The interior D-line of Appy roughed up our interior O-line and their nose tackle weighed about 250 lbs. Dobbs missed throwing to wide open wide receivers, throwing to covered guys instead. Debord's play calling was straight out of Johnny Major's 70's playbook, whether Butch ordered it or not. Yes, Appy is a reasonably good team. But they might win two SEC games because they have no depth and limited talent. They are just well coached and focused. Yet, there we were down 13-3 in the third quarter still running the ball with a delayed hand off gap scheme on first and second down. Obviously the coaching staff and players did not take the game seriously enough. Seems you would want to practice more of your offense before you hit the tough games since the entire nation already knows Butch's offense anyway.

Let's be honest - there are going to have to be significant coaching philosophy and player effort changes if they expect to compete for the east division.

So what's the take if we barely beat Vt and look just as bad, then Miami strolls into Boone and hangs 50 on App state? Will the concern be real then?

What if app st kills miami..and we destroy vt..then a meteorite hits earth and rest of the season is canceled...will we be NC?

It is easy to play the what if game..

When what counts is wins n losses when it's all said and done.

In case all the negavols didn't notice..we are 1-0
