When he is in good position, he is a good tackler. The main issue is that most of the time he is out of position, and he does not have the speed to make up for it.

Not a comment on Telander, but VN does have a history of downplaying the ability of defensive players, some of which go on to have careers in the NFL. Not sure we're the best evaluators of talent.

I was wondering the same thing when I read that. One thought (and it's just speculation) I had was that the PWOs are being told they're PWOs for now, but when the number gets bumped to 105, they'll go on scholarship. And maybe these guys are coming cheap (or free) and will serve as solid practice players, which we obviously need.

As for the current walk-ons, yeah, I'm sure they'll go on scholarship (Wright is a senior, btw, so he won't be back). So maybe that does create a numbers crunch. But by my math, we're currently at around 87 for 2026 with the guys returning and the committed incoming freshmen. Of course, we'll add some from the portal, but we'll also lose some to the portal.

(this is all imo)

I believe our PWO offers to the two kids at Knox Catholic are soft scholarships in anticipation of the 105 bump. they are good players who could play at a Marshall or UTEP and staff knows 105 SEC level kids is not likely in the NIL/transfer portal age. Kids will transfer if they don't get PT and we will need loyal backups/depth/practice squad to survive. It's smart imo

you end up with around 70-80 SEC talented kids and 25-30 lower tier kids who again you will lean on for depth and practice. The NFL has a practice squad on salary and IMO we are moving towards that in CFB

Obviously our coaches who know all these players infinitely better than VN believe Telander to be one of our better LB’s. But hey, VN has been declaring certain VOL players as awful for years, then these same awful players end up in the NFL so the VN track record on identifying talent is pretty bad.

He's very good in between the tackles. He has absolutely no reason to be playing 3rd downs, but they don't really have a choice right now. This is why getting experienced depth is important. You need competition at the highest level and be able to match anything. The young players are good, but they're always going to be playing behind the 8 ball until they settle in which is natural and takes time

I think he is one of the biggest reason our secondary is having problems. He just seems like he is a day late and a dollar short in his executing his assignments..
