'25 AL EDGE Jared Smith

The buzz: Jared Smith is an early four-star for On3 in the 2025 class and the EDGE out of Birmingham Spain Park is pushing 20 offers. A couple of SEC schools are high on his radar early on and those are Georgia and Tennessee. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound sophomore visited Athens and Knoxville over the summer and hit it off with each coaching staff. Coach Garner and the Vols have made a strong impression early. Tray Scott and Georgia did the same. Both schools should have Smith back on campus this fall. Alabama is the school Smith grew up a fan of. He camped in Tuscaloosa this summer, but the Crimson Tide have yet to offer.

The Vols impressed.

“From start to finish, the fans were into the game and they were pumped,” Smith told On3. “I was feeling good about Tennessee’s odds of winning because of the way they were moving the ball and how the defense was holding their ground, but how they won at the end was crazy. Alabama misses a field goal, and Tennessee marches down the field quickly and kicks a field goal to win. They showed real confidence.”

“I love coach Heupel, coach Garner and coach Chop (Levorn Harbin),” Smith said. “Tennessee is like a second home. I have visited numerous times, I have driven around Knoxville and I love the Tennessee community. The people are very passionate about Tennessee. They love the program and I love that.

“This atmosphere Saturday blew me and my mom away. Seeing how everyone loves the team gave us chills. The people at Tennessee, the coaches and how the team is performing at a high standard definitely has Tennessee up there as one of my top schools.”

“I am high on some schools, like Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Clemson, Tennessee, Ole Miss and others, but I am looking at all of the schools the same way. The time now is for me to build relationships and that is what this fall is about for me. I don’t have a time when I want to start cutting my list down or anything, but I will do it when the time is right. Right now, I am still looking at all of the schools.”
“Tennessee is coming off a great season last year and they are trying to build on that this season. They are trying to build their defensive line and continue to build on other positions outside of their offense. I love Coach Rodney Garner and Coach Josh Heupel. Tennessee has great people up there and they are still high on my list.”

Staying in Alabama, top-50 EDGE Jared Smith is a name that is expected to be in attendance. He will have plenty of buzz around his recruitment as multiple teams are involved, and Tennessee continues to work to be one of those schools. The hope is to get Smith to town during the spring and make an impression during the visit. Auburn has likely positioned themselves in the best spot here early on based on people we have spoken with.

Tennessee

After that trip, Smith is expected to head to Knoxville to visit Tennessee on June 14. Defensive line coach Rodney Garner has the Volunteers in great shape right now. Many believe that junior Volunteer edge James Pearce Jr. is primed to be a first-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, which grabbed Smith's attention. Development along the defensive line is important to Smith and that has Tennessee in a good spot.
