He is young , but when you have Fulmer , Pruitt and Fitz all saying the same thing about him and backing him .. I ain’t scared .
What else are they going to say though? Of course they're going to publicly praise him. That's just standard PR fluff. We'll know the truth soon enough.

Honestly, my first reaction isn't great. That is a huge job for someone that is less than 4 years from college..... I will just trust the staff that this is the best call..... Sheww... 26 years old and the head of the strength and conditioning at UT? Yikes!
GBO!

Why would you think that? Pruitt has the available resources to hire anyone in the country that he wants. He chose a man who was already on his staff from the beginning and appears to be fully qualified. What does age have to do with it? Obviously A.J. Artis has earned this opportunity.

There's there's an old riddle that says "do you know how to tell when someone's an expert"? A: Someone who lives at least 50 miles away.

Sometimes the best guy for the job is right in your own backyard. In other words Pruitt is saying "let's stay on the exact same trajectory that we have been on". Continuity is not always bad, especially with our history.

They could hire somebody else...and praise them? These aren’t the empty praise types. This is an educated hire.

Time will tell if this is a good hire.

My only reservation is that once again we are the “first” major job for someone. I’d like to get to the point where we have a staff that replaces people that leave with people that have done the same job at a lower level. Be a destination rather than a springboard.

That said, he is ours for now so I’m hoping he knocks it out of the park!!

Would replacing people who leave with people that have done the same job at a HIGHER level suffice? Example: Chaney, Ansley, Martin, Graham, Brumbaugh...

I'd say we are already at that point.

I don't consider uga to be a higher level. Period. Cheney was a lateral move, and the type of move I'd like to see frankly. That and your other examples are well taken.

S&C is such a critical position, and was neglected for so long pre-Pruitt under Lyle, that I'm just a bit nervous giving someone their first shot.

But, as I said, it's a done deal, so I am going to hope for the best!

Even if he’s merely decent and functional, it would be a nice change of pace for your S&C guy to not be the TOP candidate for every program every off-season.

I consider uga a higher level than a lower level, which is what the original post said.

I agree, its a very critical position, and understand the hesitation based on it being Artis' first job...its a BIG job; but, if Pruitt hasn't proven to everyone that he's not Butch, well...
Pruitt and Butch shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence.

Definitely hope for the best, because under Pruitt, the best is on its way...in a hurry.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee head football coach Jeremy Pruitt announced Monday that A.J. Artis has been named director of football sports performance. Artis, who has played a valuable role in the strength and conditioning development of the Volunteers since 2018, replaces Craig Fitzgerald, who accepted a similar position with the New York Giants earlier this spring.

"A.J. understands the standard we expect in this role and will continue to push our strength and conditioning efforts to the forefront of college football," Pruitt said. "Since he first joined our staff in 2018, he has helped instill physical and mental toughness in our program through his contagious energy, hard work and innovation. Our players have tremendous respect for him, and I have no doubt they will continue to develop under his mentorship."

"I would like thank Coach Pruitt and Coach Fulmer for the opportunity to lead a great group of young men," Artis said. "I will give my all to our student-athletes and the Tennessee football program. I am excited for this opportunity and look forward to helping Vol football continue its resurgence."

Artis' staff includes assistant football sports performance directors Mike Farrell, Byron Jerideau and Shaq Wilson, all of whom enter their third season with the program. Artis joined Pruitt's staff in January 2018 and served alongside Fitzgerald as the Vols became one of the fittest teams in the country.

Prior to his arrival in Knoxville, Artis spent two seasons at Duke working as assistant director of strength and conditioning. He joined the Blue Devils in the summer of 2016 and primarily trained the football and field hockey programs. He also helped direct high-performance efforts with several other varsity sports. The Duke field hockey squad he trained in 2016 was ranked in the top five for the entire season and advanced to the NCAA Championships.

Artis collaborated with head football sports performance coach Noel Durfey during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. The 2017 Blue Devils won the Quick Lane Bowl led by future NFL first round draft choice Daniel Jones, who Artis worked with.

Artis' time at Duke was preceded by stints at Appalachian State and Campbell. As a graduate assistant at Appalachian State, he worked with the Mountaineers football program, which recorded its first-ever bowl win during his tenure. Appalachian State, in just its second season in the Football Bowl Subdivision, beat Ohio in the 2015 Crampton Bowl. Artis also oversaw the strength and conditioning efforts of the Mountaineers' field hockey and golf programs.

At Campbell, he logged valuable experience with football, baseball, men's and women's basketball, soccer, softball, track & field and wrestling.
Artis was a three-year football letterman at Campbell from 2012-14, playing wide receiver as an underclassmen before transitioning to tight end his last two seasons. He was a three-time academic honor roll member and graduated with a degree in exercise science in 2015. He later earned a master's degree in exercise science from Appalachian State in 2017.

A native of Eden, North Carolina, Artis is married to the former D Janelle Brown of Edmond, Oklahoma.

speaking of resumes--they are for those who do not know you!

Ask Florida how it worked out when they wanted to interview Spurrier when he was willing to come back to the Gators! He had won conference Championships and a National title and they asked him to submit to an interview! Guess they didn't know him? South Carolina wanted him without the interview!
