yesterday was a weird day, and it just felt like it ended on such a dud.

i think situation has dictated a lot of what has, or hasn't as it were, transpired the last 72 hours or so. so take that however you want, but this job at worst, two weeks ago was the 2nd best opening, at the time. and since then you have Dave Doeren saying "don't want".

i think it's fair to question things, aloud. don't get me wrong.

but as i sit here this morning, and i've read up some more on Pruitt, and listened more this morning, i'll just say i'm warming up to a Pruitt hire, quite a bit if some of the stories about potential staff are true.

i still don't know if he's going to be a good head coach. none of us do.

but people he's worked with think very highly of him, he's a great recruiter, and he's put up the numbers that says he's an elite defensive coach.

and if you can pair him with some other really strong recruiters on this staff, as has been rumored, then this could work.

we aren't winning the press conference. and this won't change perception of us nationally. it will probably be a long off season.

but i think get him in here, get him a great staff, and see what they can do with this first class. i think you might be able to tell relatively quickly what they'll be all about on that front.

then it's wait and see. i'm definitely in the camp right now that thinks of the three we've been presented, Pruitt is definitely the one with the best upside. especially if you get Martin to come on board and run the offense.

there's at least a path there, and a good core to build around staff wise.

Ditto - personally, if we're going with a coordinator, I'd rather have Venables, but Pruitt could get it done.

Im great with the hire. Let's roll with it. At this point, everyone here refuses to say anything positive about anyone.

Pruitt is a good coach and has the most potential of Fulmer's final 3....

I hope Fulmer makes the right choice

People keep bragging about how Pruitt's done at Alabama, but I wonder how much of that is due to Saban's coaching and the players' talent vs. Pruitt's coaching.

me too. but i won't be upset if he stays at clemson in the same role, and i think that's what happens. Venebles has never expressed a deep desire to chase a big time head coaching gig. and that being the case, then you don't pursue it.

one of the things fulmer did say is for it to be someone that wants to be here, so if there's any doubt, you have to move on. and i get that.

now, if venebels takes another HC gig, especially this off season, then i'd say it's extremely fair to question whether or not we did an adequate job in vetting him out.

yeah, and i posted last week about "finding paths for success" regarding potential candidates....and for the last 24 hours i did not follow my own advice.

i was pretty apathetic yesterday afternoon/evening as i mulled over the prospects of any of these three getting the job. and there's plenty of reason to be, so i don't begrudge anyone that still feels that way.

i'm going to try real hard, and choose to want this to be successful.:)

He's done very well in other places too. It's not just like he came to Bama and all of a sudden became a great DC. There's a reason that Saban wanted him over everyone and really without interviewing anyone else when Smart left. If it's not the whale, the I can support a Pruitt hire. Much better than Tee, Steele, or any if the others being rumored lately.

Fair points - I guess we just strap in and see where it goes. In any case, hope it gets done today or I'm likely out of a job! Have a good one, Jake.

totally fair. it's not like every saban disciple has turned into some uber success. it's very much a mixed bag.

it's definitely wait and see with us.

pedigree wise, he's spent a lot of time on a saban staff, so he knows what it looks like, how it is supposed to look, and what it takes to get it to that level. he's been to FSU and GA as well, so he's had other influences as well.

hopefully it's all rubbed off in the correct manner and we're going to get a finished product, ready for a job like this.

We'll know by year 2.
All of the REALLY good or great coaches show results quickly. Whether we'd hired Leach or another higher profile coach, it still comes down to having a good staff. With the right staff and the resources UT has almost any decent coach can be moderately successful. With a great coach and a very good staff maybe we can see SEC championships again.

As with most things the truth usually resides somewhere in the middle......is Pruitt the best choice, I don't know,:) he's an Alabama homey so I'm not so sure, are you?:hi:

yeah, i know he kinda got a bad rap for his defenses at GA, but really, if you go by the numbers, he's an elite defensive coach and recruiter.

i went on 247 last night and looked at the guys he was responsible for recruiting, and it's a who's who list of studs.

Fair question, but then you can also look at what he has done at Georgia and Florida State.
Saban had nothing to do with the great defenses at those schools.

Exactly. How many times are schools going to continue to hire Sabans assistants thinking yeah this guy. It's never been the assistants. It's always been Saban. Please try something different.
