After game thoughts

At VT, Hooker was great in year one, and bombed in year two. I sure hope that doesn't happen to him at TN. Surely not, but he's definitely been a little off.

I don't see why you want screens just because of the pass rush. If you tell me our receivers will be wide open and the QB will be slightly rushed I would say run the play based on past history. They were open, we could either not get them the ball or they dropped the pass. Just out of sync because of the rush but I would say the odds were in our favor to be up 14-0 instead of behind 10-0. Thats our offense we just need to get in sync.[/QUOTE
Self admittedly im just a couch coach with a love for the game. But to me it seems on obvious passing downs they were heavy blitzing from the middle, with man on the outside. They were getting to Hooker very quickly a lot in the second half and we weren’t very successful. Alot of times we had stacks on the outside, with them playing one man close and one back off the line. We could scheme different quick hitter screens in those situations to get the catcher moving to the middle of the field. I like our WRs chances of breaking that one tackle for a big play. Also could see going trips on one side with a call or check to a bubble screen if see that heavy pressure coming.
I also see screen opportunities for the RB screens out of the back field, and angle routes for them against that type of pressure.
May not be the types of things Heupel likes, but they’re definitely options to consider in my opinion.

That may have been the ugliest half off offense we have played under Heupel, and to come out of there with a W is very fortunate. I feel it was also very important for the program to Win that game, no matter how ugly. If we had lost that game after being up by 7 at the half, and going against their fair at best passing back up QB, because of our offenses inability to score would have been really bad. There are still may concerns, but they are easier to take after the W.
It’s easy to second guess play calling, I thought it was ok but could have been better (esp outside screens in long situations where they lit up Hooker). But the main issue was lack of consistent execution, plays were there to be made many times and was a bad throw, dropped pass, missed block, etc..

The second half the D didn’t dominate but it did it’s job, albeit against a a backdrop up qb and half a quarter back up center.

Current thoughts and looking ahead:
- So far Hooker is not as accurate as he was last year, and that is hurting us some on offense.
- Although Tillman is putting up good stats,I think he either has 4 or 5 drops on the year in just 2 games, that’s not good.
- I think the O line is blocking slightly better in the run game this year and is also better in pass protection. Most the time when they got to Hooker it seemed they were bringing extra guys. Which goes back to the play calling comment, I think WR screens on pash rush downs are missing and passes to backs out of the back field.

Defense:
- I think the D is generating better pass rush, not where it needs to be but was better against Pitt. We blitzed though to get it, blitzed A lot…
- im still very concerned about our pass coverage against good passing teams, I feel well get lit up when we face one. We’re still weak covering the middle of the field, and the opposing WR completion percentage against #4 is bad

Marshall beat ND, Appy St gave A & M fits, Texas almost beat Bama, Kent St giving OU all it wants…. So all in all, you have to give the Vols credit for gutting it out and finding a way to win against a good team. Especially once it had reached the point of “what bad is going to happen on the next play”, and I was there for most the second half.
There’s A LOT to work on still, but now we’re set up for a HUGE game in a couple weeks against the Gators ( as long as we don’t have a world class goof up next week). There will more than likely be some type of game day crew there, whether it’s ESPN or the SEC network boys. The hype and atmosphere at Neyland will be no doubt be through the roof! It’s time to get this Gator monkey off our backs!!! Go Vols!!!
I agree but watch out, @unfrozencvmanvol will take offense regarding your post.

And still pretty dangerous at "a little off". I think he shakes it off over the course of the season.

I agree and they did have to adjust, I was just saying I agreed with their pregame scheme because even with the rush receivers were open for TD's had they connected.

So it turns out that we do have a defense. Not the kind that keeps OC's awake at night, but the kind that can be just enough of a pain in the caboose to allow the offense to find its' rhythm, which in this case was just enough to win a very losable game. I would not count on our defense to bail us out again, but it was nice to see what they can do when they bow their backs.

Our defense plays hard every down, they don't make as many assignment errors as in years past. I like our DC Banks because he has improved guys beyond what I thought they could achieve - 24 is a big example of this. They were in position to intercept at least 3-4 more balls but just couldn't squeeze 'em. I don't think we have seen the last of the improvement. Play the 2nd and 3rd team guys a lot next week get them on video and coach them up. Get us to where we have two or three deep at every position without a substantial drop off (because our D may play 90 downs a game) and this D just might be a credible threat to hold even the best offenses to <35-38 points per games which gives us a shot at anybody given our offense.

UF has a cupcake next week as well, so both teams will get to "tune-up" next Saturday for the coming battle on September 24th. It matters not to me one bit what UF's record is; who plays at QB for them; or what the rankings are. This is UT -vs- UF, and it's time to serve notice that Neyland Stadium is no longer a wildlife preserve. In Knoxville, Gators get served up fried and with a side of baked beans...

The wild card in the Gator game is their QB Richardson. I don't think he can or will stand in the pocket and deliver like Slovis, but the dude is a threat to take a busted play to the house at any time. My hope is Florida cannot run the ball on us consistently and have to rely on AR to convert 3rd downs through the air. Richardson will make some plays, but do to the Gators what we did to Pitt, make 'em attempt FG's in the redzone. Just don't give up a 76 yard run and 57 yd pass play for TD's like Pitt got and if our Offense gets back on track this could be a very fun day for the Vols. Barring more stupid special teams turnovers and chunk plays for scores, the Vols will win. 42-31 good guys.

Heupel's early success makes it easy to overlook the fact that he started in a huge hole, and there are still significant gaps in this roster that separate UT from the upper crust of the SEC. But we are pointed in the right direction, and if nothing else, yesterday's win showed that we do have a defense that is capable of playing tough when it needs to.

This staff is building a winning culture by focusing on the process and instilling in the players that if they do what they're asked to do, the wins will come. It's critical that we keep this staff together for at least 2 more years to establish the continuity in the program like good programs have. In today's world that's a tough ask.

Based on yesterday, there is room for improvement on offense, defense, and special teams. All 3 made good plays yesterday, and some bone-headed ones as well. Gotta clean that up. I have no illusions about the UGA and Bama games, but playing well from the start, and eliminating the mistakes will spell the difference between 7 wins, and 9 or 10. There's a lot of football yet to be played, but it starts...IMO...by exorcising the Gator Demon first. Do that, and we're ahead of the curve.

Agree to a point, but Texas, and even more so Marshall and App State illustrated Saturday that a double digit underdog can win on a given day. Not calling for an upset of either Bama or Georgia but stranger things happen with regularity in college football. You never know when the big boys may get a good dose of rat poison!

Akron will tell us nothing, no matter how it plays out (unless of course UT loses, which I seriously doubt).

While it is true Akron will tell us nothing about the quality of our team, it will tell us if our guys have bought into the proposition that in these games you're not competing with Akron as much as you're competing with yourself and the standard you have established for what constitutes good play. The score is less important than our execution. No turnovers, no special teams screw ups, no penalties (especially unforced - false starts, delay of game, unsportsmanlike, late hits OB, etc.) Look like a well coached well oiled machine going about our business and business is good!

Go Vols.
