After Florida thoughts

No reason to break this one down imo.
The breakdown is this.
We won, they lost. New streak. The end
I see your point, a win against FL is a win against FL, no matter how it happens. And I am enjoying it. But it’s just who I am. I still see the issues that need fixed that caused us to almost lose, and that still stand between us getting back to where we want to be

Ok, this game may have defined who you are, and no surprise, as last year, it's the offense. Therefore, within reason, the O should have been tried to put it away late. Not saying to go crazy, but it's your strength, maximize it to your advantage. Not doing so is playing not to lose. Relying on your D, at this point, isn't the smartest of moves.

The D (front 7) is better, if anything it may have more depth alone. Secondary....yeah, no. I do not get why, when you've dialed up pressure, the secondary doesn't jump the first move by a receiver. Strikes me as a disconnect. Anyway run D is improved....still have to get pressure by scheme. Performance on 3rd or 4th down is still abysmal. An opponent's ability to convert 1st and 15-22yds shouldn't be over 50%, or so it seemed.

Still considerable room for improvement. Fun to watch though.

All the anal retentives wringing hands over this one need a beer or a bj. GBO.
Like I said in an earlier reply, just who I am. I mentioned the positives too friend, but I also see what’s keeping us from being an elite team. And no way the end of that game should have been that close and caused the massive heart issues. After a couple nitro pills from the last 3 mins of the game, I’m enjoying it now!

Game was over early in the 4th. Final margin means nothing Vols are legit. 4-0 and we still haven’t played a complete game yet.

Unbelievably we’ve turned the corner in Heupel year 2. Way ahead of schedule. Didn’t believe it would happen this fast.

I’m celebrating and loving every minute of this ride

THIS. Some of you guys don't remember where we were 2 years ago. Huge improvements! Sure we got a lot of work to do, but definitely trending upwards.

Keep in mind FL punted only once and had one FG attempt the entire game. Hard to stop a team using all 4 downs to advance the ball. They knew they couldn't stop our offense, so they had to take the chances they did.

Vols have finally grown a pair and are winning the games we would normally lose. Think people just arent use to the success lol

they punted to the one yard line, and we responded with a 99-yard drive to end the first half

Our boys are learning how to win. I'll take the W for sure but we have a lot of work to do. Coaches need self evaluate after this one. Don't try to run the clock out versus Florida. You gotta keep scoring

Big picture, we needed it for our personal psychology, as well as our recruiting momentum. We will always appreciate and remember this win. It may give us a bigger picture program builder in terms of recruiting. But we are not beating Georgia or Bama, and a better bowl game is our possible final reward. It’s a small piece of a very large puzzle that we thought our toddler ran off with and hid. It does help, but how much is still undetermined.

We had 5 players out for injury today: Tillman, Sampson, Dee Williams (could have used him today), Burrell, and Kwauze Garland.

I hear all of what you're saying. I felt demons of the past creeping around toward the end of the game too. After having some time to think about the game, I still contend that Florida got really lucky with circus catch type $hit going on. I mean who throws a bomb on 4th and short deep in their own territory with one of the worst passers in the SEC. They hit all that lucky garbage all day long. If half of those risky moves don't pan out it is a Tennessee blowout. Florida played the luckiest game I recall in recent memory and Tennessee still took their best shot, kept composure, and won the game.

My thoughts.
Our Offense is top caliber and can compete with any team thrown our way
Our Defense has a crap ton of work to get done

I’m no defensive strategist, but on some of the plays where we got gashed, there was clear alignment issues. On the play AR kept and ran right for a TD, we were outmanned on that side from the start. I said right before that play that if AR ran right there was no way we could stop him. I’m not sure if that’s on Banks or the players, but it has to get addressed.
Im glad we have a week off. We need it to get healthier before a huge game that looks pretty winnable to me.

I thought Banks just had too much respect for AR's legs, and didn't bring big pressure nearly enough. When we got a blitz home was when we were most effective in pass defense.

With all the criticism of the defense, one thing that gets lost is that we shut down their run game for the most part. Bottom line is this - get a couple of stops on all those 3rd and 4th down conversions and get off the field, and this is a 3-4 score game. We're close, and more defensive talent coming in is only going to help.

First, it’s feels amazing to finally get a win over Florida! A win is a win over them no matter how it comes! That is a huge win for this program in sooo many ways, recruiting, taking that next step towards being “back”, could go in and on..

The negatives:
- Heupel and staff nearly gave that game away by going too conservative after getting the ball back on offense with over 2 mins to go. They haven’t stopped us all night, we never punted. The defense couldn’t get Florida off the field, other than the one huge forced fumble. With that being said, you get first downs and finish the game there. And if that wasn’t bad enough, they went even more conservative and soft on defense letting Florida have whatever they wanted. There was also wasted time outs trying to run out the clock. Heupel and staff MUST take a step back this off week and discuss/improve end game management, and also how to fix the defense.
- which brings point 2, the defense is some better, no doubt. But Richardson looked like a Manning out there throwing against our defense, and he’s not that good a passer. Receivers were wide open all day, esp in the middle of the field. Banks didn’t blitz much to try and make Richardson uncomfortable. We had a ton of missed tackles, the inability to get off the field on 3rd/4th down showed back up. I’m sure we still don’t have SEC quality players across the board on defense, but I’m not sure it’s just that.. is it Banks play calling?? Is it how they’re teaching pass coverages? Do we just need better players, or is it time for Huepel to tell the defensive staff they must start doing better or may have to look elsewhere after the season? I guess time will tell..
- on the onside kick, you can’t just sit there and watch that ball. You have to hit their gunners, attack the ball, something!!

The Positive:
- WE FINALLY GOT OVER THE HUMP AND BEAT FLORIDA!!!!!
- Florida never stopped us on offense, we never punted once. We only stopped ourselves with the 2 fumbled and the conservative play calling on our last drive. Florida has NFL dudes on that D, and alot of talent. Our offense absolutely put it to them. Hooker looked amazing, and yes he should start getting some Hiesman talk now after a performance like that on a national stage.
- the RBs ran hard, picked up blitzes, caught the ball out of the backfield. I give the RBs an A today
- No Tillman (although an NFL type talent) no problem! Our offense didn’t miss a beat! I mean what a catch by Keyton! He made plays, Hyatt made plays, Bru made plays! WRs blocked well, and I don’t recall a single drop by a WR! Another A!!!
- I thought the o line played well. Hooker was pressured at times, took the one sack/fumble but that was more good coverage by Florida and got speared earlier in the game causing a high throw. But he had plenty of time on a number of drop backs against pass rush. I dont know our rushing average with the RBs (I know Hookers was great), but it seems we ran the ball well against them.
Other thoughts:
-TEs I’d have to give a C-. Fant’s fumble was a back breaker at the time, we could have been on our way to blowing the game open there. He did catch every target though. Warren had a drop that ended a drive, although the ball was behind him on one of Hookers only off target throws. He did get both hands on it. He did have a big catch and run on our last TD drive.
- We are 4-0 for the first time in a long time, with a W over Florida! If we can beat LSU in 2 weeks, my what a game and atmosphere there will be at Neyland again for Alabama.
ITS GREAT, TO BE, A TENNESSEE VOL!!!!

I agree with these points, and I like that you got you specific about what was good and not. Definitely places to work on but I’m still pumped.
