edit #5:
According to the link (an update from a TV station at 12:47), only one lane had been closed, and now both are open. That matches what was being reported elsewhere, but some said that it was closed entirely. So who knows? :dunno:
fwiw, I wouldn't give a nickel for trying to head back across the mountains tomorrow morning, after melt and refreeze.
Hope everyone has gotten where they meant to go, or are well on their way.

edit #4: apparently still not moving eastbound around noon per bryhez, post 38.

edit #3: the 9:15 announcement is now gone; now there is this (from NCDOT site):
CONGESTION ON I-40 NORTH OF CLYDE
There is heavy congestion on I-40 in both directions between mile marker 1 and mile marker 15 in Haywood County, due to inclement weather. Congestion is expected to subsided by 2:00 PM today. Motorists should use caution when traveling through the area.

edit #1: Whoa, new info for I-40 through the mountains! See post 10 below.
---------------------------
Good morning, Vols on wheels! We woke up to about 3 inches of snow here in west Asheville. At our house it's 33 degrees, so there's already a little melt going on, although there is some soft snow still falling. Per the weather reports, it's supposed to go on through the day but without a lot more accumulation. There was more in the mountains of course, up to a foot in places.
I checked local news, and although you could tell that they were desperate for a crisis, it appears that I-40 through the mountains is in good shape, as are secondary roads. It has been in the 60's over the last week, so the ground is warm. When I checked the traffic sites, they were mentioning some slowdowns in two places, but no accidents as of now.
I-26 south of I-40 goes through Henderson County, and Hendersonville seems to have gotten more snow, up to 5 inches.
Oddly, Columbia SC is getting snow as well, although I can't tell how much. Per the TV talking heads, they don't expect much accumulation due to warm ground.
Local traffic in Asheville is zipping along without problems.
Here are a couple of websites that might help you as you get ready to leave:
weather:
Ray's Weather Center - Asheville - ashevilleweather.com
roads:
I-40 Traffic Road Conditions North Carolina - Roadnow (slide the image over to the west; it's centered on the Piedmont when you first click)

Safe travels, and bundle up tonight. Good gosh almighty, I think I'm going to be happy to be watching from home. :hi:
GO VOLS!!! :clapping:
