Tennessee Volunteers athletic department posts $3.98 million deficit - ESPN

I think folks needs to read this.

The University is not in the position to land any big fish. When Kiffin left us 10 days before signing period, he left a strong negotiation position for whomever the Vols could find on such short notice.

I highly doubt that the University can afford to get rid of Dooley and replace him with a "big fish" coach. Not this year.

Everyone can continue to speculate, but its time to recognize, the AD is not in the position to make it rain.

The financially expedient move is to either get rid of Dooley this season or keep him through his contract. The numbers do not lie.

Tennessee Donors are in posistion to change the financial reality of the athletic program..I think you give DD one more year but if the donors want him gone..plain and simple..he's gone

Donated money (from donors/boosters) on all levels is a moving number.

Ask Alabama after they spent it up front if the books squared up at the end.

Keeping Dooley will cost considerably more than getting rid of him. That is the AD financial reality.

As long as Dooley is the coach they will be losing $1000 dollars or so a year from me. How does that factor in?

Will be joining you without a second thought about it.

When they sell 40,000 season tickets next year that will be 15,000 more/less than this season. Those tickets are being sold to many people that donate well beyond the ticket price.

To keep it simple if they drop to the 80,000 average paid attendance number from around a low 90,000's average over all home games, then you are talking about $5,000,000 minimum loss of revenue just from tickets. Add in lost donations. More when you factor food, product, etc. sales. Even more when you figure many continuing season ticket holders will forego making donations because they will be begging people to buy tickets with a bad football program and a bad economy. In summary they have a $10,000,000+ annual long term problem on their hands. Consider that if Dools stays Bray, Hunter, and Patterson are likely to be gone.

It's that serious. No brainer in my mind as to what happens from here.

I think he has to lose a few more for the powers that be remove him. Waiting until his contract is up might be the best money decision but I don't know if Vol nation can handle it.

Ok, but the current financial situation may not make it possible

Unless the AD is expecting the tooth fairy to visit over the next two seasons and dump loads of revenue onto the program, then it will not be possible to let Dooley go one day before his contract expires.

If that is the case, it would be wise for Hart to just come out and say it; or else, the entire fan base and possibly a lot of boosters will be calling for his head come 2015, as well.

It is the best money decision; however, it is only $700,000 that the AD would be saving compared to if they fired him today. Of course, keeping DD might cost the AD over $700,000 over the next three years in revenue.

The next two games could get real ugly fast.

It would be easy to see UT not selling 20,000 tickets per game next year in a few games at minimum, at roughly $50 a pop. He is done.
