Despite the progression of the Volunteer program under head coach Butch Jones, Tennessee is facing a good deal of skepticism this offseason thanks to what many perceive as a lack of returning experience on offense. Anyone saying that clearly isn’t taking into account the returning offensive linemen on Rocky Top.
According to college football expert Phil Steele, no Power 5 team returns more starts on the offensive line heading into the 2017 season than Tennessee with 111 returning starts. Right behind the Vols at No. 3 in the nation and No. 2 among all Power 5 teams is Auburn with 106.

Having a talented and experienced O-Line helps a inexperienced QB cut his teeth. We should have one of the best units in the SEC in 2017 and beyond. Tons of talent in this unit.

Unfortunately, and they didn't mention it in the story, we also have the most QB sacks and hurries allowed by any returning O line as well :)

It's tough to block for a qb who wants to run all the time. Should be easier to block for Dormady.

Most of the media experts are focused on delineating what we don't have. Finally, there's something we do have!

There were issues that need to be addressed. 9-4-17 we will learn a lot.

Maybe the experience will be seen on the field.

The month of Sept is going to tell us a lot about where we stand as a program. It's a challenge for a new QB to have 3 big games in the first month, but Dormady isn't a FR-- he's a JR. He hasn't played a lot, but he's used to big games and high stakes.

Having talented offensive lineman hasn't been the issue. Having coaching that is capable creating a quality offensive line frome those lineman, has been.

Our OL took a big step backwards last year. 119 was physical on the OL even though we were inexperienced and young to the point Bama and her fans talked about it. 120 looked on their heels and got punked pretty much the whole season. Why? I'm not close enough to the program to know. Therefore I am hopeful since we had offensive coaching changes that 121 on the OL will be better than 119 and if we are we could make some serious noise in the SEC this year.

I think Butch knew better than anyone that Don Mahoney wasn't up to the task of coaching Oline at the P5 level. I think it's part of why he brought on Debord, but it still didn't pan out. You can have all the talent in the world in your olinemen, but if they aren't coached to work together as a proper offensive line, that talent is effectively wasted.

I mean you cannot argue with those statistics. It looks good when you see us returning that many OL who have starting experience. The only caveat is are those quality starts. It's one thing if a guy is a true starter versus being forced to start due to depth/injury issues and not truly ready for SEC play. However, I do expect our OL to be one of our strengths next season. I believe we have quality depth and experience there now that will allow us to put a competitive OL on the field. Honestly, we will need to depend on the OL to have a good year, at least at the beginning of the season.

Also, I think JG or QD, whoever ends up winning the starting job, needs to come in and dominate. They will need to be a true leader and play caller. I know there will be a learning curve and some growing pains, but programs across the country have guys that they just plug in and excel with no drop off in the level of play. We need a guy to come in a be a star. It is time Tennessee had that type of player.

There's no way you watched all the games and saying that. Dobbs was running for his life. Lots of plays never had time to develope.

It's time for the OL to show up.
