I think it is time to take the run plays completely out of the play calling. By calling a run play, we are basically throwing away a down. I know some of you will say, "...but we have to keep the defense honest." I think that's a bunch of bull in this case. I can't remember a TN team who has ever ran the ball this poorly.

Sad but true. However, we will not beat anybody with a one dimensional team. The reality is, we better fix that run game at any cost.

I'm ready to completely drop the play action pass and TE.
We are no threat to run and can't use the TE effectively as a result.
I'd like to see Bray in the shotgun with 4 or 5 WR set for 90% of the plays.
Throwing to Lane out of the backfield is a nice option if Bray gets in trouble.

What I can't understand, is how we have become worse. This is basically the same O-line unit as last year with more experience. We were at least able to run the ball with some success last year at times. This is mind boggling!

I think part of it falls on Chaney. His background is the very same type of offense. Heavy pass, and very little running game (at Purdue). I do think we need to put Neal in more and let him try to simply outrace the defenders to the edge, and only cut back when there is a good lane to do so. That's all Rainey and Demps did today, and it worked well enough to move the chains most of the day.

Having said that, I don't know that Heistand will stay beyond this year if the O-line struggles to run the rest of the year. It is his position that is not getting the job done, despite considerable size and athleticism at his disposal.

There must at least be some visible improvement occur between now and the end of the season, or I honestly expect to see Coach Dooley make a staff change to address the problem.

Yep. Run draws and screens out of the shotgun to keep the D honest, I-formation isn't working.

This is ignorant! We need to keep at the running game. Our line is very young and will learn more and more over time. We are a very special group. We proved that today. This is more like a learning year for most players. Keep at it and eventually we will see results.

Take the tight end out, nonsense. We used the tight end very effectively in the first few games. i dont know why we strayed away from the short passes in the first half.

What are we learning? Like I said we are getting worse, not better.

We have no running game.
Play action pass doesn't do anything for UT without a running game.
That's the main purpose of the TE.

My depth chart is from the Cincy game but the OL looked like this

LT JR(RS) ***, FR****
LG SO ?,FR***
C SO***,FR***
RG SO***,SO(RS)***
RT SO****,FR****

I don't know the stars for Bullard at LG. It's definitely a young line. Maybe we can get a few more and by the time these guys are seniors, Tyler can send tweets to his receivers changing the play mid action plus our running backs may have time to stop and strike a pose before continuing through the holes.

We might want to try coaching run blocking and coaching the running game first. Lane hasn't looked better than Poole at any stage during any game, yet he plays the second half. I'm thinking its a case of "my guy"....

We abandoned the run, came out immediately after halftime, and like every Dooley TN team, we laid a big fat second half egg when it mattered.

And, to cap it all off, we kept rolling the ball to Bray in the shotgun.

Yeah the fact that Bray looked like a short stop (receiving grounded snaps) most of the game just goes to show why our run game was abandoned. Because the line wasn't getting it done and probably wont be threw the month of October either. I still think the play calling could've been just a little more strategic regardless of Hunters abscence.
