Fans take this game far to serious. ANY matchup with anybody other than the practice squad would result in a full blown game. Coaches don't want to lose even under the OP's terms, that is playing scrubs. The press would cover it. Highlights on ESPN .. Kessling would show up (He's there for the O&W isn't he?). No way you could put on a half a$$ UT vs. anybody game.

One caveat.. Back when I was in school, there were Freshman games. Freshman couldn't play varsity and they drew a couple of thousand. I remember walking to class on the hill on a friday afternoon and seeing a football game going on (Freshman). You could see the field from the hill then. Just listened to the "HOST OF VOLUNTEERS" podcast. Bill Battle and Condredge talking about news leaking about this great freshman black QB. UT played Notre Dame (Freshman game) and 30K or so people showed up to watch and Condredge lit it up that day.

That's a different era.. Can't do it today.
PT, you and I must have been there at the same time. The JV games were great in those days, too. I remember well the 1969 UT vs UA freshman game and thinking that Alabama looked dominant, which played out true over the next several years after those guys became upperclassmen. Wish we could go back to that system, but it's impossible now like you say.

Ah the French, they only like us when they get invaded, something to do with Agincourt 1415.

Anyway back to the thread, its been very interesting to read the pros and cons, but on balance I would say most are in favour.

I would rather keep the O&W game and add a couple of preseason games. This will never happen, but with (up to) 85 scholarship players as well as walk ons, it would be a great stage for the players who never / rarely play to showcase what they can do ala NFL preseason style. But it will never happen.
