GAME 12 – Vanderbilt

Firstly I want to say that I want Tennessee to win every game, I want us to win every quarter, I want us to win every 3rd down, heck I even want us to win the toss of the coin before the game, so last night was hard, so very hard, but In many ways it was a microcosm of the 2025 Vols, At times they have been explosive on Offense but also with a smattering of important misfires, but this Defense was littered with flaws and was an anchor (to lighten this report I have tried to add a few nautical references as last night’s opponent was the Commodores) on the teams aspirations. I remember how easily Syracuse ran up the middle and this deficiency was quite frankly apparent throughout the season, and the missed assignments and particularly miss tackles, were common. There will now be 8 months of debate, was the problem Coach Banks or the players? Probably both, but in my humble opinion, considering Arion Carter and Colton Hood will be off to play on Sundays, the ONLY starters I wish to see return in the 2026 Secondary is Ty Redmond and probably Edrees Farooq. Finally, I would like to extend my congratulations to Vanderbilt, they beat us and beat us convincingly (image without the 14 points from the two INTs), the only team that can truly say that this season.

Pregame prediction – my hopes were that the passion the Vols players showed last week (it was almost like a disruptive influence was no longer in the dressing room;)) would continue and with the raucous noise of Neyland we would overwhelm Pavia and these pretenders. Combine this with Aguilar possibly signing off his all too short time at Knoxville, normal service would resume against Vanderbilt. My concern is that, when we face a QB who ad-libs off script we can be all at sea and if you ignore the logo on the helmet and look at the team, this was a better team than Tennessee. If anything was learnt in Florida it last week it was that historical results against an opponent doesn’t really count for anything when losing at Florida and winning at home to Vanderbilt was expected to be a given.

It now 27 minutes before kick-off and its pre match ritual time, I’ve got my Orange Tennessee hoodie on, I have logged into DAZN (they have our game on this week so no You Tube and hope I get a signal this time). I still have got time to fill up the glass with Pepsi and get a bag of sweets at the ready as I can’t help visiting “munchy city” during the game. GO VOLS

QUARTERBACKS B -
This loss is not on Joey Aguilar who actually had a decent game. 29-44-299 with 1 TD and 0 INTs kept Tennessee trading blow for blow for a while. If this season we would have had last year’s Defense his overall performance was plenty good enough for the playoffs and if you are still not convinced of his input, just compare the UCLA season with Tennessee. From what little I saw of Jake Merklinger and with this Defense, we would have struggled to even go bowling in the brutal SEC.

RUNNING BACKS C
In the first half we were playing complimentary football with having success in the Running game. DeSean Bishop was doing what he does most weeks but as the overall performance became disjointed the Running game took a back seat and 83 net yards is no way near what Tennessee normally rely on. I am mystified where Star Thomas has gone recently? I can only presume that there is a hidden injury that nobody knows of.

WIDE RECEIVERS B
Mainly a solid day with a combined 19 catches. Chris Brazzell II led the way with 91 yards and Mike Matthews 58 and Braylon Staley 35 but Matthews again dropped a certain TD (which almost seems a weekly event). I know that I’m being ultra critical here but I’m comparing him to the expectations of a 5 * WR and one of the top NIL recipients on this team.

TIGHT ENDS B
Ethan Davis had another season high with 7 catches and a whopping 85 yards. 2026 could be a big breakout year for him on the national stage.

OFFENSIVE LINE D -
I thought they lost the Line most of the game although there were the odd, good moments such as a David Sanders block for a Bishop TD. A big thank you to Wendell Moe who “sucked it up” by suiting up and producing a great block for another TD run which resulted in another injury for him. It’s been confusing whether this was a good O`Line or not this season? So I guess the correct word is inconsistent.

DEFENSIVE LINE E -

My pregame fear that Pavia is the type of unpredictable QB that Tennessee historically have had huge trouble with was spot on. Conceding 582 total yards starts up front. Again, people seemed to be “free lancing” on the pass rush instead of keeping lane discipline and corralling Pavia. I have written most weeks that we simply do not have those big run stuffing DTs this season that we have had recently. We need to hit the portal (as well as for Safeties) really hard here.

LINEBACKERS F +

This is not a full F because I will give Arion Carter a pass as he also played hurt with double turf toe, But I am heartily fed up with the LBs choosing wrong gaps and the middle opening up like the Red Sea did for Moses. Jeremiah Telander.is also too slow in coverage, how often do you see No 22 trailing the ball carrier? sorry call him out, and no doubt he gives his all, but we would have been more effective if stayed in the middle just to stop the run.

DEFENSIVE BACKS F +
This grade takes into account that Colton Hood was another who was clearly playing hurt and boy did he look it at times. Ty Redmond had a textbook INT and PBU but the rest of the Secondary have been not up to SEC standard all season. The Boo saga hurt us at STAR and Andre Turrentine was a liability most of the season. I understand Joel Wyatt is a big hitting safety who will hopefully sign this week, well do we need him or/and some new faces urgently in the DB room.

COACHING E
The team seemed up for the challenge early on but then the missed tackles and stupid errors started arriving. But it must be said the 3rd Quarter was awful so the Coaches must take some blame for the lack of adjustments at half time. As mentioned at the top of the report unless the Defense improves significantly then Josh Heupels reign may have plateaued.

BIG MOMENTS
The biggest was a dumb “Roughing the Passer penalty” just before half time when we finally stopped Vandy and then Matthews TD drop stopping us from being only 3 points behind late on. But in general, the continued miss tackles were back breakers. Stop going for the punch out fumble and wrap the guy up please.

The advantage of writing my report the day after is that hopefully I think more rationally than emotionally. So here is my rational summing up, back on August 30 we had no idea how the QB “trade” would work out and remember Florida and South Carolina were both ranked in the Top 25 above us and they had two of the Heisman trophy favourites in Lagway and Sellars behind Center. Now FL and USC both went 4-8 compared to Tennessee’s 8-4. So yes, I hated losing last night and particularly how badly we lost, but it should not distort the big picture that this was a good, not great, but good season.

I know often the Bowl Games seem pointless, but I hope we take it seriously and a 9-win season is none to shabby. It is also important to win as the last memory of the season is the one that sticks with you during the far too long off season, anyone remember Ohio State? so the mood will be so much better until next September with a bowl win.

It would be great to see/hear your comments.

Thanks London Vol! Always enjoy your grades especially since I missed the game yesterday being on your side of the pond.
My only response is that it is interesting that I heard Tony Basilio make the comment this week “ to beat Vandy you only let Bishop get all the carries” and it actually happened. I guess that was the game plan? Or do our coaches listen to the talk show hosts now?!

Oh boy! What a difference a week makes in your Report Card...last week against Florida Tennessee graded very high, & yesterday the Vols FLUNKED. I had to turn off the television after Ethan Davis dropped the sure touchdown pass & UT had to settle for a field goal. That poured gasoline on Pavia & his vandie cohorts. As much as I loathe the commode-doors, they deserve credit for whipping the Vols in every phase of the game. I've suffered through some miserable losses in my 65+ years of following Tennessee football, but this was truly the bottom of the cesspool.

OK, Coach....John Ward said it in 1999: It's Time. He was referring to his retirement from broadcasting. Now, IT's TIME for some serious "trimming the fat" with his coaching staff. Agree?

Meanwhile, Merry Christmas, Boxing Day & Happy New year to you & yours, my Bristish friend.

I am sorry that my report varied so much from week to week but you should have read my first draft last night !!

At the start of the season I would have bet my house on losing in Florida and beating Vandy , but fortunately I don't bet.

I fear that shuffling coaches will not resolve the fact that for years we have tackled badly and are so undisciplined at the most outrageous times and add to the fact we also seem to be made of China, these are deeper issues than the coaches name on door.

Thank you for your best wishes my American friend and I hope not only your health is good but you have a great Christmas, thats after only just recovering from Thanksgiving :)

I agree with 99% of this. Bishop had a great 1st half. 92yds 2 td in the 1st half.....96yds for the game. Our offense has been slipping since Hooker left, especially the passing game.
At the end of the day....its all about value. Is a 5 star WR that gets paid to catch tds and doesn't, worth the $. Is a 2.5 million a year DC worth the $? Is a HC, that is known for dropping a winnable game or 2 a season, worth the 9.5 million? All the way down to ticket prices...is it worth the $$$? Its an over inflated game now. Paying HS kids, and football coaches millions is crazy.

Always sensible and reasonable AND CORRECT takes..

The top 5 most frustrating things for me this season:

- Turrentine and Telander being slow AND missing tackles AND taking bad angles; I don't question their heart but they simply aren't even close to SEC caliber players
- TE Play (not Ethan Davis) - Kitselman still has cost us multiple big plays with his drops, fumbles, penalties and interception bounces, not to mention his tackling on the Oklahoma turnover. I hope he never plays another down for us...a Captain doesn't need to be an All American, but by God not doesn't need to be the Three Stooges either
- Matthews dropping passes - He has the ability and is clearly a 5 star talent, and makes some amazing catches; but drops wide open passes especially for TDs...how is this possible? He seems to half ass his arms out
- Not containing mobile QBs; while this has always seemed to be a UT weakness for years, this season some of our blitz packages leave the middle wide open, and I believe another poster was correct that our DL and LB sometimes "free lance" what they are doing, which is 10000000% coaching
- Tim Banks in general, we know the feast or famine, bend but don't break BS, and the injuries on defense...however the stuff mentioned above is all on him. Come up with SOMETHING else... There is no excuse for a two TE set with a simpler counter out the back to constantly get between 8-20 yards....no matter which team has done it, it has worked all season. So either A) he doesn't scheme for it B) the players aren't listening or C) He is scheming wrong and all of that is his fault.. He needs to go

Now this team had talent and while disappointing in the big games, still had chances to win each of them (until the 2nd half collapse yesterday). It seemed like the team was devastated about the UGA ending, and slept walked some until Oklahoma ended their playoff chances...but got up for Florida...so a real emotional rollercoaster. The issue is that the team did become mentally soft in key times (whether offensive drops, or play calls, or defense or special teams (both FG and punting); and that's a reflection on CJH. Once Banks and Martinez is fired, a full examination of the program needs to be had and he needs to "get tougher" himself.

I still think CJH is a great coach, but he needs to make the improvements needed to get back on track....hopefully that starts with a good bowl win

GO VOLS
I’ve waited all night for your perspective, Sir, and you did not disappoint. Well-stated!!

Enjoyed the write up as always! To me this game was a microcosm of the season: uneven and very frustrating to watch. Right at the end of the first half it became apparent to me that the defense simply had no answer for Pavia and their offense. Our guys looked confused and out of position throughout the game and our offense, while it looked good in the first half, disappeared in the second half.
Overall an 8-4 record would normally indicate a good season but to me it was barely mediocre and that’s probably being too kind. The wins they did get in conference play, minus Florida, they had to overcome horrendous defense and mistakes to get them and those teams have all had really bad seasons. And frankly there were times throughout the season when it looked like the players didn’t know what to do on defense and the offense, as good as it was at times, would just disappear. I’m not really sure what to be excited about for next year to be honest. The recruiting class is still good at least?

Overall a very good writeup. Couple of points that I would like to make.

Don't like the E grades (no offense). Prefer D or F

I question our staff evaluations at this point. Seems that for the past 4-5 years whenever the staff signs a 3*, we all sing out "another diamond
in the rough" found by coach. Then as time passes, we fault the players' inconsistencies and how the roster is still not up to standards.

For 5 years we have had a weak LB room and questions in the secondary. It is time to move on from some of the defensive coaches that we have
or coach Heupel will lose a lot of his fan base.

8-4 is generally a good season. This year I feel is a little different. We did not beat a single team that had a winning record that mattered,
ETSU is not SEC caliber. All the SEC wins were bottom feeders. Make some major changes or next season will be a disaster. What were coach
Heupels record his final 2 years in Fla?

I agree...give a D or F lol

Evaluations aren't necessarily the issue, we need to take a long hard look at the new NIL world and see what is better, to sign multiple 4-5 star HS kids and hold on to them and pay them out the nose and hope they develop or to mix some with about 10-15 seasoned experienced upperclassmen from NIL transfers and build a team year to year like the pros...a lot of defections to the portal and injuries really affected this team.

If the team had Jakobe Thomas, he might have been worth an additional win by himself.

Agree, the defensive coaches need to go sans Rodney Garner, time for some new blood there; I also would take a long hard look at OC and Special Teams

10-3 would've been a good year for us, 9-4 will be holding steady, 8-5 and a bowl loss is regressing bad.

Outside of Vandy, the losses to UGA, Bama, Oklahoma were at least understandable and each was a winnable game...

also Heupel's last season at UCF was a throwaway season because his two great QBs were injured and it was COVID year and he had 17 starters opt out...

defensive coaching has not improved during hypes time at the helm. Changes must be made or his seat will catch fire.

both the o-line and d-line were consistently man handled by teams of equal or better talent.

leading the league in dropped passes is unacceptable.

we did not use the portal properly this year and it showed.

Get out of my head, London Vol

Spot on analysis
I dont go with the fire everyone crowd but changes need to be made. "Made of China" quote is scary similar to a bama N law who said that if our coach ever figures out the strength and conditioning, look out. He said your guys are always hurt and thats why your coach hides injury reports. Hard to argue.

As good as Banks defense was last year, it still got exposed against the teams with good offenses. This year, even with the injuries (willing to give him a pass) the poor tackling and bad angles persist across his tenure. Not sure if he can figure it out after playing young boys or if he needs to go but change is needed.
Agree with your take on tge O line, dont know what to make of them. There was good and horrible on the same series sometimes.

Offense - coaching - play calling. When getting blizted, in the first half great, the second half - what changed.

Extremely disappointed in HOW we loss. I think we all knew it was possible with our defense combined with how Vandy payed this year.

Also, I felt like Vandys coach knew they would win after looking at film. This part concerns me more.
Love the Vols, but discipline on defense and something on offense was missing.
