GAME 2 – PITTSBURGH

Throughout my 13 years supporting the Vols our best years were 2015 and 2016, when we went 8-4 in the regular seasons. You may remember these totals, but can you remember who we beat during those seasons? I doubt it, maybe one or two teams. Can you remember how each game went, especially the matches that we won? Well, I certainly cannot, so this shows, in the scheme of things, that the most important thing about lasts night’s win away to the team ranked team No 17 in the country, is that we are now 2-0.

QUARTERBACKS
A strange night for Hendon Hooker despite figures of a 64% completion rate, 325 yards, 2 TDs and 0 INTs. I believe he has had, and will have, better evenings. Again, there were a couple of passes that “sailed” on him, such as the one when he overthrew a wide-open Cedric Tillman, which would have been a certain touchdown. However, he did adjust with a beautiful pass for the Bru McCoy touchdown, as well as the game wining pass for Tillman, which turned out to be the match winning score in overtime. Encouragingly, he seems to be gaining some understanding with Jalin Hyatt, whilst those 8-yard passes are not flashy, they are great for extending drives if the running game has stalled.

RUNNING BACKS
A tough day for the Running Backs. Jaylen Wright (47 yards) had the best numbers but he coughed up what looked like a costly turnover near the end. I presume Jabari Small (17 yards) is unlikely to put this game on his draft resume. However, he did covert two touchdowns from the 1-yard line, which we have struggled to do in the past.

WIDE RECEIVERS
Similar to Hooker, Cedric Tillman (162 yards) looked to have had a career day, but he left other yards on the field, such as letting a 50-yard touchdown pass bounce of his facemask. Yet, his head did not drop and he adjusted brilliantly for the go-ahead TD in overtime. As I mentioned, it was a breakout day for Hyatt (11 catches for 73 yards), there is chemistry now between Hooker and him, so that is another piece of good news going forward this season. Lastly, I wish to mention Bru McCoy (4 catches for 56 yards), included in this was a catch and brilliant 1st down conversion late in the game. He has earned the right to have his number called more often.

TIGHT ENDS
Jacob Warren sold a lovely fake block and release for a 24-yard completion that looked a TD but was marked down at the 1. Unfortunately, Princeton Fant not only dropped a pass, but committed back-to-back penalties late on. We still need this department to step up this season.

OFFENSIVE LINE
Pittsburgh do have a rally strong front 7 and have had more sacks in the last three years than any other team in the country, so this was always going to be a test. Overall, I thought the O Line competed well. Hooker was mostly kept clean in pocket - 3 sacks and 1 Quarterback hit, and those were because Hooker was checking down too long. However, disappointingly, there were not many holes created for our anaemic running game.

DEFENSIVE LINE
Now I understand all the hints during fall practice that this defense is much better this season. We saw it last night. The D Line got penetration time after time and the most impressive fact is that we hit the QB 16 times. That is a colossal total and the repercussions of this were that Slovis never appeared in the second half and his replacement Patti was less stable than Bambi. Byron Young (4 tackles, 1 Sack, 2 TFLs and 3 QB hits) and Tyler Baron (1 Sack, 2 TFLs, a Forced Fumble and a QB hit) in particular, were rampant all night. I also saw a big No 21 (Omari Thomas) filling up my TV screen time after time. Kudos to Tim Banks for the game plan and for coaching up these players. One final note, despite getting to the opposing Quarterback so many times, there were no “roughing the passer“ flags, this is also down to the quality coaching behind the scenes

LINEBACKERS
For the second week running Aaron Beasley was the star of this department (14 tackles, 1 TFL and 3 QB hits). Perhaps we will not miss Juwan Michell this season after all. Jeremy Banks was also around the ball often, although his stats of 3 tackles and 2 QD hits do not reflect this in full.

DEFENSIVE BACKS
Like Beasley, Kamal Hadden, had another huge performance and is by far our best Cornerback. It is time for him to be left “on an island” and give Warren Burrell some much needed help. I have already mentioned Flowers but Tank McCullough also shone and Wesley Walker made some very timely plays. So, with Tamarion McDonald, we do have some depth at last in the backfield.

CHASE MCGRATH

Chase, you get you own heading because that 51-yard field goal was clutch. It changed how Pitts’ last drive in regular time was viewed, as a touchdown would have won it for them.

I always enjoy your comments and observations.

I think the “extended handoffs” to Hyatt completely change the complexion of this offense. Those passes set us up with so many short yardage situations and cause the defense to get wider and wider to try and maintain leverage. We had a couple instances where this set us up for a gash run up the middle. One of which Jabari Small was a shoestring away from breaking for a HUGE run in the 4th quarter.

Excellent write up, as always!

Spot on for the most part! I do think we should have won that game by 2-3 tds. We kept them in the game by shooting our selves in the foot. We need to learn to put teams away when we have them on the ropes.

In spite of his numbers, Tillman had some costly critical drops in critical moments. The TD that you mentioned off the face mask, and then later in the game, a ball over the middle which would have put us in the red zone which Pitt had struggled all night.

Overall though, we didn’t play our best, and still got the win against a tough, well-coached, top 25 opponent. But those critical plays need to be made. The UGAs and Bamas will take advantage and not let teams stay in the game like we let Pitt. Lots to learn! Big, hard fought win! GBO

Great recap. Positive vibes on DL pressures for sure. Agree on Bru getting more targets...and w/ Hyatt and Tillman, we've got a chance to have a three headed monster that can wreak havoc. Biggest glaring concern for me is running game to not become one dimensional. Am sure they'll address some of the unforced errors which kept Pitt in the game.

Great write up.
Jeremy Banks as well as multiple others deflected numerous passes, to the tune of 4 or 5 deflections total. That really helps a defense. GBO!

The quarterback hits were a thing of beauty.

It was weird bc I feel like we got killed in the first half, yet we were up 21-17. I knew that was a good sign that we had the better team and coaches, just weren’t catching many breaks
yeah once we settled in, I felt confident we were better...just kept them in the game with our mistakes...and was worried we'd let them sneak a win out w/ a second string QB...as we've been prone to in the past.

You guys are off target calling Tillman’s miss in the end zone a drop. Go back and watch it again as the db pulled down Tillman’s left hand and should have been flagged for interference. That one wasn’t just a drop by Tillman although he did have a couple of uncharacteristic drops earlier in the game

We were able to win despite a mediocre offensive showing and numerous self inflicted errors. The defensive effort- especially after Pitt‘s first three possessions was outstanding - a combination of our guys settling down and the coaches making some adjustments. Their OL played poorly IMO in that they never really adjusted blocking schemes to address the pressure. They had one starter out and lost another midway thru the game but overall their OL was beaten badly all night by our front regardless whom they played.
As noted, it wasn’t the sharpest game the offense has played but they never got down. Hooker missed a couple easy throws but never got down on himself or tried to overcompensate. Same for Tillman. That’s great maturity and great leadership. I know as a fan I tend to expect perfection but reality is that there will always be shortcomings and success is more about how you respond.
I though both the blocked punt and muffed punt were avoidable. I realize that at game speed there is a very small window for decision making but as the announcers pointed out, our punter took his time even though he could clearly see the guy coming. Maybe he though one of the blockers was gonna chip the guy or maybe he thought he was still good without hurrying but either way, it was a misjudgment that gave Pitt life. Same on the muffed punt. Once he realized he was going to have to catch the ball over his head he has to just step up and let it go…fans will be upset that he allowed the punt to go an extra twenty yards but you just can’t risk mishandling ball. He fields that punt or let’s it roll and the game is over. But again, like Hooker and Tillman, Flowers did not let that play live in his head but instead went right back to work and made some great plays to help us seal the win.

This was a win against a quality open - defending ACC champs and a school with a strong football tradition - on the road where we made plenty of mistakes and didn’t play our A game. It will help this team improve.

Hyatt is trying to play the role of Jones from last season and is getting better. Don’t know if he will ever be capable of the YAC Jones produced.

Spot on as usual, I will add the following:

Special Teams were not so special tonight, yes the 51 yarder was great but the blocked punt nullifies it.
Before the blocked punt, on other punts, you could tell the punter was holding the ball too long, almost nonchalantly.

When the breaks don’t go your way put on more steam

Last year our big weaknesses were we could never seem to convert 3rd or 4th and short, not to mention our red zone offense was one of the worst in the SEC. Well things are changing boys and girls. GBO

As is customary, another great write up. Admittedly, after Pitt jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead, I was quite concerned. To Pitt's credit, they made some incredible plays during the game. It almost seemed like they were destined to win. But, after they got over the punch in the mouth, they cranked it up and put points on the board while keeping Pitt from keeping pace. We finally got to see some defense from our guys, 26 QB pressures is very impressive.

I was actually not surprised to see Pitt block a punt, they had come close on two others. Whoever was blocking on end on the right side turned to the inside, I guess maybe to double team the defensive player, which left a clear path to make the block. Honestly, we did enough to have lost the game, while at the same time, enough to win. Strange game, now let's clean it up and get ready to play Akron next week, then pull some gator teeth.

OP, as usual, great job with the write-up. You may have missed your calling, or are you a writer? Either way, you were spot on. Sorry about the Queen and God save the King. GO VOLS!

The SEC Network said we had the best WR's in the league, and possibly the nation.
