GAME 11 – GEORGIA 18 NOV 2023

It looks like I was the luckiest Vol fan last night as after the Jaylen Wright TD and the Andre Turrentine TFL my method of watching the game live was removed. My only option was off to bed for four hours then watch the game. However, there were only highlights (perhaps that should read highlight in hindsight) available when I got up and then I saw the score so I have actually not seen the full game, and I am in a quandary if I will watch it as it feels about as much appealing as watching the video of my gallbladder being removed some years ago. So, I think it is better to write about some overall thoughts on what I have learnt.

We are an 8-4 team
2023 will be seen by many as a disappointing campaign, but after the 11 preceding years that is probably harsh, it perhaps should be seen as a transitioning year. If last year was 7-5 then this year would be viewed very differently but the bar was artificially set high by Hendon and his gang. Another way to evaluate this season is by comparing our record with Florida and South Carolina who are both 5-6 and they need to beat Florida State and Clemson respectfully next week just to get to .500 and an invitation to a minor bowl game. The 2023 Vols should not be remotely compared to the Elite teams this season but the aforementioned next rung.

The secondary is still a mess
Almost the whole time I have supported Tennessee we still seem to be ‘all at sea’ in the secondary, I have winced so many times over the years after having been stout upfront and leaving the opponent in 3rd and long I have watched in horror as the 3rd and long more than often has been completed. So, is it better this year? Well just look at the 4 losses this season. The opponent has been a combined 32-57 on 3rd downs, that is a ridiculous 56% completion rate. Sometimes the gap Moses created in the Red Sea seems less wide than our secondary gives some receivers. I always dislike calling for coaches to be replaced but whatever decision is made this MUST NOT continue if we really have aspirations of SEC and National Championships.

Injuries and Refs
These are two areas where there seems to legitimate concern, but if you go down those ‘rabbit holes’ you can easily miss the big picture. We have had a string big injuries this season that has hurt us badly but injuries has always been since time began, is this not why you has 85 players. It merely highlighted the lack of depth on the roster (this is down more to Pruitt than Josh Heupel). When I look at Heupel’s recruiting classes I am more confident this will not be a problem going forward. The Refs seemed to have been harsh on the Vols this year and the phantom hold on the Doneiko Slaughter INT whilst leading 7-3 was a back breaker, but maybe the Elite teams get bad calls as well but as our margin of error is so small it perhaps it is more visible. As they say, “if you can’t change it you have to live with it”.

What is the view on Milton's season
It would seem no article is complete without discussing this big question. I have supported Joe all year and whilst he hasn’t had a bad year it hasn’t been to level I hoped for after the Vanderbilt and Clemson games in 2022. Now there can be a number of reasons for this, i) the play calling is not as good or as innovative under Joey Halze than it was under Alex Golesh, ii) the play calling was deliberately vanilla to suit Joes restrictions such as his short inaccurate throwing, iii) the loss of Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman combined with injuries to Bru McCoy and later Dont’e Thornton, iv) Florida’s template for Defensive Co-ordinators was to play two deep safeties and keep everything in front of you was the perfect gameplan for Milton’s strengths and weaknesses. You can take your pick but the fact that is indisputable is that one of the largest arms in college football history did not throw 300 yards in any game this season.

Why Vanderbilt is a big game next week
Most will have written off the season after last night and probably started dreaming of Dalton Knecht leading the Vols to the Final Four, well there are two very big reasons why next week is important and that is the 2024 Class and 8 Months of thinking about what next season will look like. 2024 Class, a really sad side issue from lasts nights beat down was that we had a huge and impressive visitors list with many 5 and 4 Stars “in the house”. To really compete with the Alabama’s and Georgia’s we need elite talent not just coaching and schemes, so if we “check out” next week it would be a terrible look to the recruits. It will be much easier to say “yes, we have a gap to close on the blue bloods however its Nico time and with your help we can catch up”, but trying to sell that message if we lose to Vanderbilt will be much harder. 8 months, we will soon have a long 8 months to dissect 2023, So its time to let Nico loose and give us a small sample to show both the recruits and the fans that all will be fine under the “anointed one” in 2024. This really was only a transition year from Hendon Hooker to Nico Iamaleava.

Please feel free to discuss the above after all its just my thoughts.

Agree.

Our OC is far too predictable. If we throw an incomplete on 1st down, the next play is always a run unless it is at the very end of a half with time running out. Our opponents know this too. He either needs to be retrained or get shown the door.

Bottom line, we have/had to many pieces missing to be considered equal to teams like Georgia/Alabama, etc.. It is much to early to to start predicting how we will be next year!!! I ”assume” Nico” will be better than JM. He has a lot of potential but potential is the most overused word in sports!!! I will wait until I see his performance in a couple games against good teams before I declare him great. Even if he is as good as we hope, there are several good QBs in college so it will come down to which QBs have talented players around them. We need to wait to see who we lose from this team and who we pick up in the portal. We are going to need A LOT of help from the portal if we are going to be equal to Bama or Georgia. I don’t follow the portal but I don’t see us picking up several 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round draft picks from the portal to fill in the missing pieces. I fear it is going to take a couple years minimum before we are elite but I hope to see progress. JMO.

If I had to pick one 2024 recruit we need to sign it is Mike Matthews WR. I watched some of Missouri Florida and Luther Burden 9-158 took over the game and Matthews could be just as good.

Not sure Milton will participate in this years bowl game, so it is imperative that he plays against Vandy. Good write up Ben.
I don't see Milton sitting out of a bowl game. I think he will want to bestow his brilliance on use one last time.

I'm not trying to be funny or facetious, I think that's how his mind works. He is a superstar.

As usual, very well spoken. Sorta mild criticism, but in keeping with your style. I just wonder if your insights are likely to me the best we get to read because you are watching from so far removed from the carnage. Up close things really look and feel much worse.

As I see this:
I fear it is going to take a minimum of several years and some good play to attract the kind of players we wish for.

You ever met him? Id take the assessment of those who know him over those who don’t.

Opinions are like buttholes, we all have them. That's what this is, social media. You may not like my opinion, don't care, that's what we do here, talk football, which includes opinions.
Obviously you care or you would not have responded. Back to my question- have you met him?

"Mild criticism" oh sometimes I wish I had a dog to kick (only joking, English humor). Its amazing how Saturday evening events can shape my Sunday.

:) You give me too much credit but I appreciate your comments anyway. As my wife would say "I see things simply because I only have a simple mind". Trust me I would love one day to be "close up" even if it is carnage.

It's still too early, but with any coach/staff, I want to see how well they evaluate kids and how those kids grow and develop under their coaching. I know it takes time, but the fact that we didn't see more of our younger secondary players this season worries me. Maybe Heupel knew this season was going to go this way because of our QB and other upperclass players and he wanted to have as many redshirts as he could manage? Nothing about this season surprised me except Heupel not playing his younger players more. Is he holding them back? Why? Are they just not progressing? Did they miss on their evals? With uga and bama scooping up all the 5 star guys, I know we have to do more with less, but if you can't identify a player you can develop in the first place, it doesn't bode well for your future at UT. We will live and die by coaching lessor players up. This is why I'm anxious to see our roster flipped and filled with Heupel recruits. Not gonna miss many of our seniors...well...none of them actually.

I haven’t met him either and I get the same impression, he lacks self awareness. This dates back to last years SC game, I think.. clock winding down, in fg range, he scrambles, clock expires. No points. It hasn’t changed

Yes, I have met him, one time. But meeting someone doesn't tell the story. Every week I also get a chance to watch him during practice and on the sidelines. While the other qb's are practicing with him, he spends a lot of time goofing off, dancing and singing. I have an opinion, he will play, if he's allowed.

Yep. He's gonna skip the bowl to focus on getting ready for the combine. Who needs a meaningless bowl game. He's goin' big time on us.

We all knew there was a decent possibility we were going to take a step back if our QB play wasn’t up to par, and it ended up being subpar throughout the course of the season. Despite this we still appear to be an 8-4 team. Let’s not let recency bias of last year cloud the fact that the program Huepel inherited was the biggest dumpster fire in college football arguably. This is not a talented roster at all. It’s assumed we will only get more talented and have more depth over time. It’s also assumed we will not have a QB situation like we do this year going forward in the near future.

Burdens a sophomore and he moved to Domenic Lovette's position (it suited him better) after Georgia poached their best receiver by NIL. The position moves really helped Burden from his freshman season and also, he became Cooks main target. Matthews would be big get but as a freshman, it's hard to come in and takeover at WR in SEC.

Very good perspective comparing us to Fla and SC. Both of those teams faced similar situations as UT and look where they are today compared to us. I believe reasonable fans thought 8-9 wins was the ceiling with this schedule and loss of talent from last years roster. Throw in the injuries and we are really lucky to have the 7 wines we have.

Your insights are always level-headed and accurate. I always look forward to them. We just have to shrink the talent gap, and that comes from getting the right recruits.
