I Know I'm no where near the top. I do remember when the Vols played Arkansas in 98 with two minutes to go, over half of the stadium it seemed headed for the exits. It was raining and messy but I sat there in the rain under my poncho and watched the Vols miracle come back. All the fans on the street headed back to the stadium. Too, late!

I drove by the golf course today. Saw on the middle of the fairway a bright orange hat and shirt. You couldn't miss that person from a mile away. That, after this season, to wear proudly the orange is a true fan. God bless you mysterious orange golfer. :post-20645-1119625378:

Well, that's a difficult question. Wearing your orange (esp. through thin) is a start. I also think cheering for UT in every sport is a big part too. You have to love the school as a whole. There are too many Arizona fans around here who claim to only be a fan of their bball team, not football.

Caring about your team is also a big thing. I realize most people on here are big UT fans but are just frustrated w/ the season. I am too. As hard as it is for us, think about how hard it is for the players. They need our support b/c they do it for free (usually) and for our enjoyment. They are also younger than most of us and under a lot of pressure w/ football and school.

I didn't have much choice b/c I was 3rd generation UT alum and grew up in Knoxville. I love UT sports and, given the choice, there's no where I'd rather be than on campus any football game weekend.

If I made it through '88, I can make it through this year!

GO VOLS!!

That's something that bugs the hell out of me... people, at least some that I know, are all about UT when it;s football season, but they somehow start cheering for Duke or UNC when basketball season rolls around... :bad:

I don't fault them if they cheer for another team sometimes but they should always cheer for the Vols first, IMO. I cheer for GT most of the time but would never choose to watch them over UT.

That's just it... they don't recognize UT's basketball program at all... I'm sure it'd be different if UT was as successful as a Duke or UNC.

All of us who are true Vol fans don't have to explain...it's a special thing...and one that folks from other places would probably not understand anyway.

I've never made any bones about it on this board, I'm a Vols football fan, only. I follow UNC in basketball because Roy Williams coached at my high school before going to Carolina as Dean's assistant, Brad Dougherty played basketball at my high school, and although you don't like Buzz Peterson in K'town, he did play high school basketball for one of my high school's rivals. By the way, I hate Dook and I'm a METHODIST. That's like a Catholic hating Notre Dame.

What is a true Vols football fan. I am. I have a power T in my cars' rear window, a real game worn Vols helmet complete with war wounds ($250) in the back window shelf of my car along with a never worn Vols cap. I have a CD in my car player of the Pride of the Southland playing "Down the Field" and "Rocky Top". My wife's cell phone rings "Rocky Top" and she has a shrine with used Vols game tickets, orange and white pom-poms and a UT cheerleader Barbie doll on her shelf above her desk. Both our PC's at work have Vol's wallpaper. I have a beer opener that plays Rocky Top. I eat cheetos, orange Moon Pies, and drink RC cola during televised games. Before I plan anything on Saturday during football season, I find out when the Vols are on TV so I can be home to see it. I hate Alabama and Bear Bryant in particular. I stopped pulling for the Redskins when Spurrier went up there. I'm always buying Tennessee shirts, caps, jackets, and any other souveniers I can find. We go to Karaoke bars and our intro music is Rocky Top by the Tennessee band. We attend Vols home games whenever we can get tickets. I have trouble sleeping when the Vols lose a big game. We don't just talk the talk, we walk the walk. I critcize them when things go like they have this year but I continue support them in the hope things will turn around. I get on this board and read every post and sometimes post myself. What burns my ass more than anything else is the people on here who belittle people like me because I don't live and die with every atheletic team the school puts on the field and because I'm not a native Tennessean or a UT grad. By the way, I tape all the Vol games, keep the good ones, and watch them over and over after the season ends. How can I support Vols basketball when we only get a couple of games a year televised here, I can't get Vols radio, and the newspaper here doesnt post any scores except ACC and top 25 game scores. Like it or not, the football Vols have a lot of supporters like me who don't follow any other Vols teams except the womens BB team. So tell me, would you rather not have us in your corner?

What is a true UT fan? The answer is different for each individual. I wear orange 90% of the time. I never miss a televised Vols football game unless I'm at Neyland for a game. I stand with the VOLS NO MATTER WHAT, through GOOD times and BAD, I bleed Orange. I teach my son about football and life while watching UT football. I am not a big basketball fan, but I watch Vol games when they are televised. I love baseball and always hope for more Vol baseball to be televised. I watch the Lady Vols basketball and softball games when televised. I am a true VOL FAN in my heart no matter what anyone on this or any other board says!

A true Vols Fan.
Well it starts the very first time you walked in to Big Orange country. The first time you felt the real grass (yes it was real even back then) under your feet. It was the first time you saw the then shaped "U: design of the field. It started when your mom cried when she knew you were about to live your dream. Then cried even more on your last Saturday in Orange.

It contiunes when you see that first photo in Orange and you remember the young boy who thought he knew it all only to find it was nothing compared to what he would learn.

It gets in your heart and your soul and then your own kids come along then they have your grand kids.

Now when it really hits you that your a true fan is when your grand daughter, says hey papa know what time it is and you say what time is it and she says
"It's Football time in Tennessee" and then in her sweet 4 year old voice sings every word to Rocky Top, and you cry for now there are 4 generations of Vol fans and you know it will never leave your family.

A vol fan is all Vol fans.

It is a family. It is a Big Orange Nation

Thank God I'm a Vol Fan.

I remember seeing my old stooped over Dad, who never even had a high school education, jumping up and down in our living room when Curt Watson scored a Long TD run to beat Arkansas in the LIberty Bowl when I was a kid and have myself been a fan since.

:yahoo: My son told me a while back,"Dad, of all the things you've done for me, turning me into a Vol fan tops of the list".

I hate when other people want to tell me that I'm not a "true" Vol fan when I do things such as pick against the Vols on the picks or when I get angry about coaching and call out specific players. Being a Fan also means not being a sheep. Just because I'm pissed and I hate certain people on this team and some coaches doesn't mean I stop loving the Vols as a whole. I'm always a Tennessee fan even when I'm pissed as hell.

If I made it through '02..I'll surely make it through this. At least we are making some changes and we do actually have a quality top 10 win. The '02 team's best win was over Arkansas in OT.

02 was a cakewalk compared to 88

Gotta understand as a true fan, that we've played a killer schedule and that we have done it with a major question unanswered at QB!

Since I am married to a Purdue Grad. then I do pay attention to purdue sports (helps keep the harmony) But I bleed orange (my VOLS tattoo will tell you that) and yes even this year I still will drive 6 hours to come to a game...A Tennessee Volunteer football game is still very much an experience that people who haven't been to Neyland will never understand. Those that I have brought to games are always willing and wanting to go again and again... This has been a long year but as I did for the SC game I will be down for the Memphis game...I just wish we were doing better.

I disagree, I didn't hate the 88 team, they just sucked. I hated the '02 team.

I should hope that you didn't hate the 1988 team. According to your profile, you were 5 years old at the time.

No problem, glad it got through. The pain of that season was awful. We lost 6 in a row to UGA, Duke, LSU, Auburn, Wash St. and bammer. I've never seen Knoxville lower than that time. The silver lining is that we then won 10 in a row and were SEC co-champs @ 11-1 the next season. That's why I have hope for the Vols. Today could go a long way toward building something special next season.

GO VOLS! BEAT THE IRISH!
