A question of character

I'm not a Fulmerite, but I'll take Fulmer right now over those guys. That's not to say I wouldn't rather have some other viable candidate -- but character is important, too. I think Petrino's equally as bad (if not worse) than Saban.

It means he knows how to coach positions. Has he ever called a play offensively or defensively? No.
...and it would sure be tough to call a better game that our coord's, huh. I hear this everytime it comes up, but unless Chavis and Cut came out of the womb calling crappy games, then they had their first one(call) too.

I have no idea if Trooper would make a great OC or DC, or none of the above, but I'm tired of him getting crap because he shows enthusiasm. The man breaks fingers because he tries to get players motivated... I wish we had more enthusiasm from the coaches and the fans sometimes.

yep...and don't think that that he is not a huge draw for recruits...he is. It's infectious and he has a tremendous future. Hopefully it won't be somewhere else 'cuz "he's never called a play"...

No doubt. I'd say he was a big reason we got some of the recruits we have, a la Rodney Garner. Not saying Garner has the emotion Troop does, but I know we got some good GA high school players because of him (e.g. Jamal Lewis).

BTW, the poster that was implying cloning Troop was wanting more positional coaches. I'll take Fulmer over Troop any day of the week as a HC. Like I have said in the past though, I want Troop to have a shot at OC or DC.

Trooper knows about as much about coordinating a defense as I do. As for him as an OC, I can't see that working out, either.

...seriously...young coach, evrything he's touched has been solid, infectious enthusiasm, GREAT interview, funny, kid's(recuits) love him, minority (at a time that that is being seen for the big ?? that it is, and your saying Sanders will have a more illustious career?? Awfully big limb to go out on with all that going for him. Just my IMO, but I wish I could buy stock in him.:)

Like I said I have no idea if he'd be any good or not, but what's with all the hostility towards him?

Just look at the ONLY person's response that actually has some connection to the program(Fostermom).:)

I know there are folks who will disagree but I still question Fulmer's character going back to the whole Majors thing, so I don't see any of the coaches mentioned as squeaky clean in that department. That said, when we are talking about people who get paid millions of dollars a year to coach a sport I consider their job performance in terms of wins and losses to be much more important than thier "character", the true nature of which most of us fans will never truly know.

I have read all your comments for most of this season. I have never started a thread. I am so old, I did not know what a thread was. This will probably be my only one. The question is: Based on character would you rather have coach Fulmer or say, Saban, Petrino, Franchione.

Point taken. While I appreciate the fact that you posted, and that you are reading the board, the inherent flaw in your post is that none of those guys would ever be a viable candidate for the job. Petrino may have been at one point...but Arkansas might be his last stop. Like Saban he certainly won't be in the NFL again.

On the other hand, the reason Saban and Petrino (to this point) are able to be weasels is because their coaching skills are in demand. As long as both are winning someone will be willing to pay them top dollar to do it.

Back to my original point. None of those guys would ever be considered for the job, so you might as well throw in Bob Stoops, Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer, Steve Spurrier and Mark Richt into that equation as well. I would take the first four in that list over Fulmer in a heartbeat.

welcome to the board, volfanecs. im sure youll want to start more threads as ideas come to you. i agree with Hillbilly about the results over character. i also think that we will not have another 15 year tenure head coach. a 10 year, maybe. i guess what i am saying is that as bad a rep that Saban and Petrino have right now, the teams they field will overshadow their character flaws. from that list, give me Saban. he is pulling in recruits, and he smoked us.

Based on character?............No doubt Fulmer. Though Coach Majors and people in Alabama have a very different opinion. The former would call him a backstabber and the latter would call him a snitch.

If character alone were the only attribute in selecting a head coach, Bill Battle would still be UT's coach.

Right on the money about Battle. I will take Fulmer over any of the above mentioned coaches, and I can't think of anyone readily available I would like to have on the UT sideline. As much as this leaves a bad taste in my mouth the one guy that intrigues me as to watching him coach at UT would be Spurrier! Sorry.
