I just happened to remember David Leaverton from a few years ago. He was a nightmare. When the lights came on, his went out. He couldn't even catch the snap sometimes. Total basketcase. I cringed every time we had to punt. Ended up getting benched.

Then a light came on, and he became a pretty freaking good player. Even belted Peter Warrick in the national championship game.

There's hope. Maybe the light will come on for somebody behind the center.

Good post. College players can mature and bloom. The good book tells us not to declare what will or won't happen tomorrow, because, we don't really know.

i agree, i was thinking the same thing the other day. i remember the mental turnaround some of our basketball players had when CBP came to town. basketball isn't the same as football, but there really is no way to predict how the team that went 5-7 last year will produce on the field this Fall.

Lets hope. All JC needs to do this year is manage the game, ala Kerry Collins.

I seem to recall that David Leaverton visited a sports psychologist. I could be wrong. Im sure it was a kicker/punt who had a problem with performing because I remember thinking "If youre afraid of the big stage, WHY would you come to UT?! (106,000+)

I dont know if Crompton has the same issue, but Ive not heard of him seeking professional help, which I applaude Leaverton for doing.

He pulled his career around and ended up being a really good punter.

I believe he is now in charge of Bob Corker's Knoxville office

I'm just saying give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Last year the offense was so radically different than what they were used to. I've read alot about how they had to think too much. If the qb is confused about who is going where, then it's a recipe for disaster. If the lineman were confused about who's going to block whom, then that's a recipe for disaster. If the running backs are confused about who's going to go where, then...... I think you get the picture. I think it's like learning a new language. Some people can learn to speak fluent Chinese in a few months. Most people, however, cannot. That's why the Polish were thought of as imbeciles, even though they were definitely not, when they first landed on America's shore. They couldn't speak English very well. That's where the jokes came from. I think the same goes for, not only the qb's, but for the entire team as well. I can't see our talent level going from 9-4 to 5-7 in one year. We are Tennessee! I, for one, am excited about what our future holds. In closing, I would like for everyone to stop bashing Crompton and let him play and we'll see what happens. Sorry for the long rant.

I'm for giving either of our current QB's the benefit of doubt. JC may just need some brain work. Sometimes the right person can get you to think a little different and then "click" the light bulb comes on. I think my concern is that it doesn't seem like our coaching staff has much confidence in what we have ready for this fall. I would feel better if I thought they felt better. Hope we all feel better about it soon. GO VOLS!

That does sound a heck of alot like Crompton last year. Everytime he dropped back to pass I cringed

maybe if we the fans would have faith in him he would have faith in himself. i believe crompton can make the turn around. being a vol has been his life long dream so we should cheer the loudest for him and fully be behind him because the more you boo the more pressure is put on him and it will make it harder for him to succeed.

Absolutely, no amount of whining will change the fact that JC is now our guy. Hopefully, great defense, a good running game, and a conservative plan will keep the game close and we come away with 8 or 9 wins.

A top QB can come in next year much like Manning, Claussen, and Ainge have in the recent past.

The most important thing is to sign two top QBs so there is some competetion for the future.

I hope and pray that Crompton will turn it around, but I just do not see it happening. The boy just does not have the capacity to do what it takes to be an average qb. It would be one thing if he only consistently over shot his receivers; a little coaching, teach him to turn down the amperage maybe, but he has trouble just turning around and handing the ball off. There is not a single facet of the game that he does well, not one. So to think that somewhere beneath all of that will emerge a serviceable qb? I do not see it.

The new staff we have has it's work cut out for them but their job is to get the best guy in there for the team. It may not be either of the two we have list as qb now. The guy that use to play baseball may suprise all of us. He should be in baseball shape (not football). He was a good HS QB and recruited as a QB not another spot. He has good height and hopefully he is coachable. I wouldn't exclude him from a chance at playing this year. Whomever it is I wish them the best for our sake.

Does anyone on here know Crompton at all...or at least have classes with him?

My assumption is that he isn't the brightest kid in the world. Fair assumption?

one of JC's high school teachers describes him as a "very good student." i don't know what that translates into as far as IQ.

remember ainge's boneheaded play against UAB, and his underhand toss from the back of the end zone against LSU? he was a head case, and got turned around. i'm hoping for the same with JC.

The constant questioning his intelligence is ridiculous. He's a football player and that's all

Yeah. Just because he hasn't had a good football career (hopefully just so far) doesn't mean the guy is a moron.

Leaverton did seek help and was a major conributor to the '98 season. Still does lots of plugs for the VASF. The first step is admitting you have a problem. Don't know that this has happened with Crompton. Still, he has been asked to adjust to 4 different systems. I think he has a chance this year since the offense has been simplified. That, and I still remember the '07 LSU game we should have won!

if there were a way to give you bonus points for this thread, I would do it!

I hope your analogy comes true!
