Yep, I have been to a lot of big games, but after the fumble the ensuing drive was one big loud continuation that got louder every play until we hit paydirt. The loudest I have ever heard Neyland hands down. GBO!

Thank you for posting this. We were there, 45 yard line, press box side. It’s the greatest game I’ve ever witnessed. The kids just wouldn’t accept losing. Too many great plays by the team to single out individuals.

Even in the pouring rain, the crowd was amazing - we didn’t give up either!

That's awesome, Evergreen. Jealous that you got to see it in person!

I was living in Raleigh at the time and drove to Charlotte to spend the weekend with my parents and watch the game at their house. We all know how the game went and turned out but after the game I went onto my parents AOL dial-up (for you youngins here's what the dial up Internet connection sounded like) The Sound of dial-up Internet - YouTube

I went ahead and booked a hotel room in Scottsdale that day.

I have been fortunate to witness in person three miraculous Vol comeback games, and this was #2 on the list:

1. Miracle in South Bend
2. Arkansas Game
3. Syracuse Game

Thanks for sharing John Wards version of this game. Priceless....

In our eyes....it truly was miraculous!

One I remember attending was the '84 Bama game. T-Rob scoring on the 2-point conversion.

How lucky you've been, those are three great ones! In fact, you could put those three games (esp the first two) along with the '85 Sugar Bowl and the Dobbnail Boot vs UGa, and that would be a pretty good set of candidates for most thrilling Tennessee games of the modern era.

Agree. And the Auburn game at UT when SI was there to cover Bo was a classic Vol Thriller

God Bless Clint Stoerner!

That was Billy Ratliff. He told the offense they would get the ball back. He drove the All American OG Burlsworth back into the backfield where he stepped on Stoerner's foot causing him to "stumble and fumble" and then ol' Billy beat everybody to the ball.

There was no luck involved in that and Stoerner was just a pawn in the play!!

I'd add the O.T. win against Georgia Tech last year too. I went with my GT buddy and sat on the GT side. The GT fans were pretty quiet all day until they went up by 3 scores. After that they were pretty cocky and yelling at me and the few other VOLS that were sitting on their side. Once we started coming back and sent it to O.T. They were pretty P.Od'. When we won, they got quiet again and you could feel the tension in the air. It was a ugly win but it was a great effort by the Volunteers to come from behind and win the game.
