In 1836, at the Alamo, and again in 1846 during the war for Texas Independence, Texas issued an urgent cry to the union. One state rallied to defend Texas in an incredible way - Tennessee. We sent more soldiers to defend the Alamo, and Texas, than all other states of the union combined...and of the 189 Americans killed during the 13 day siege of the Alamo, 32 were Tennesseans (the most of any state). This earned us the moniker “The Tennessee Volunteers." Tomorrow, we march into Texas to defend her once again, this time from the misery of Texas fans! Texas fans will argue they are “the real UT” but anyone with a little knowledge of history knows The University of Tennessee existed nearly 100 years prior to Texas being a state..and if not for the thousands of Tennesseans who rallied to defend her, Texas could very well still be Mexico.
Let’s go Vols!!

Another fun fact: In the official 1850 Texas census - HALF of all Texans listed Tennessee as their birth place... so let me say it again for all the lurking Sips.. THERE WOULD BE NO TEXAS WITHOUT TENNESSEE!

You guys feel free to add your own history facts to this thread... and for all my fellow Vols in Texas, see ya tomorrow!

While most of the information above is true, Tennessee's "Volunteer state" nickname came from the Tennessee volunteer regiments under the command of General Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812. Tennessee supplied 10 times (or so) the number of volunteers requested, and the defense of New Orleans by Jackson's Tennessee regiments and Indian allies days after the Treaty of Ghent solidified our young state's place in the country.

Tennessee rallying to the defense of Texas was Tennessee doing what Tennessee does... answering the call when called upon.

I love the great state of Tennessee and I am proud to be a Tennessean but while serving this country during the time of the Viet Nam war all of the states were giving a bonus to the men and women who were being discharged. The payments were anywhere from $150.00 to as much as $500.00 an we were told to check with personnel to see how much our state would be giving us. To my surprise I was told that being from Tennessee I would not be receiving any bonus. When I asked why they said it was because Tennessee was the volunteer state and then they had a pretty good laugh about it. It doesn't stop my feelings for the state or for my service to the country but it sure bothered me that everyone but us guys from Tennessee got a bonus when we served just like everyone else. I've never forgotten that, as you can see.

Tennessee definitely botched that. Sucks. Kind of a thank you for attending and that’s that…huh

Tennessee was a confederate state...but at least they had the guts to commit to... something. Unlike Kentucky....who rode the fence leaning to whatever side was winning. It's weird that an event over 150 years ago could still affect your opinion of them...but I always thought of Kentucky as a wishy washy...weak...cowardly state....not deserving to be called a part of the South. Are they northerners or southerners? Depends on what benefits them the most. Unfair? Yes....but it is what it is.

There were several Tennesseans who went to fight with Texas because of the politics, etc. in Tennessee at the time. They simply wanted to start over and found a good place to do that in Texas. Still, many came just to help fight off the Mexicans the beat they could. Santa Ana brought his troops to the Alamo and wiped the Texans out. Texas and most of our beloved forefathers were killed that day but Santa Ana had no idea what he had done that day. He might has well have just signed a peace treaty. The fight against the Mexican army from that day forth was relentless (like a blue tick hound chasing a raccoon). I found out several years ago now why Santa Ana was not killed when he was captured. If you don’t know, ask someone with the Square and Compasses.
