The SEC was down this year. The Big 12 was down this year. ND still stank. The Big 10, ACC, and BE aren't really improving very much overall. The Pac10 was finally a little more exciting but not really all that relevant to the rest of the country.
It was really just a lackluster year for football over all.
Here's my idea though for a way of "sort of" having a playoff without changing things too dramatically.
Require all the BCS conferences to have 12 teams and a CG and maybe add another conference. There are several mid-majors capable of moving up. Some combination of Utah, Boise, BYU, or Fresno could round out the Pac 10 or the best from the MWC and WAC could combine to form a conference. ND is a natural addition to the Big 10 or else they go to the BE while a MAC team is added to the Big 10. The Big East could really choose the best from the Sunbelt, CUSA, and MAC.
You'd have 72 teams that through a legitimate process would yield 6 champions plus two at large teams. The NCAA could create a football division composed just of those teams and let the rest revert to the FCS. After your 4 match ups are created, you wait until AFTER those 4 games to poll for the NC game.... or else you just play an extra round and have a true champ.
