A black James Bond??

I don’t see it as outrage but you have to admit, it’s a bit of a drastic change to a character. Why stop at race? Why not make him a woman?

Elba said he doesn't want to be cast just so he can be used as a statement. It may not happen.

I've always looked at James Bond as an alias anyway, inherited when one 007 is either killed or retires. Good way to explain the multiple actors. I mean, what kind of spy uses his real name?
Exactly. If a black James bond causes someone cognitive dissonance, how did their brain handle multiple actors?
Oh because none of them were black.
So then the cognitive dissonance is indeed racial in its basis, whether they admit it or not. I do sometimes sigh at rigid and forced racial quotas, especially when they are unrealistic and silly....every white guy does not necessarily have a black best friend and a cute Asian kid.....but there is nothing at all unrealistic or forced about a superspy being black, and there have been so many James bond movies with so many different actors claiming rigid guidelines on his character and crying foul at a casting choice is tenuous position to hold onto.

Ok then have Nick Cage be an Oriental then.

Elba wouldn't be playing a white person. He would be playing a James Bond that is re-imagined as a black person. There is nothing about Bond that requires him to have white skin. It's not a plot point. Nothing changes if he's played by a black man. Literally nothing. He's still a spy. He's still British. He's still dapper AF.

That's what I've thought.

My only issue would be Elba is already 45, and he's only about 4 and a half years younger than Craig, and even if they decided today Elba would be 46 before they started filming. I don't care about making him black part but I think they should shoot for someone in at least their mid-30s. I know Roger Moore was 46 when he started playing Bond but that was a different time and for much different types of Bond films; unless they plain to go back to cheese.
