5 Reasons Why Jon Gruden Would be a Bad Fit at Tennessee

1) Hmmm he won a Superbowl, how hard can it be?
2) Don't know, no one does but him...
3) Ok why can't he do this? I haven't seen one thing that says he can not do it well..
4) Again, can it be harder than anything we run now? I had to swap from Power I to a Run and Shoot in college, didn't faze me any
5) And we know this how?

Number 1 is the only one that concerns me. Even if he only stays 3 years, I think he's still a good hire.

I don't know if it is a fit or not. However, I do know that of all the potential replacement names mentioned, his is the ONLY one that piques my interest. Most of the other names either turn my stomach or just don't do a thing to excite me.

Interesting that any media would be mentioning Gruden that recent since the Gruden talk has died down a lot.

I still think we have a good chance of getting him. A lot of smoke screening going on. But then again we may not get him.

Most national media called bs as soon as the story "broke".

I want Gruden as much as the next guy, but having been in Lex for through Pitino and Cal, I promise that listening to your head coach being mentioned every time there is a big opening wears very thin.

The good news is that Gruden if he comes/leaves we should be loaded with talent.

According to Athlon:

1. Lack of college experience
2. An eye to the NFL?
3. Recruiting and building a coaching staff
4. The West Coast Offense
5. Difficult to play for?

The more I've thought about it, the more I'm "somewhat" skeptical of how effective *any* NFL head coach can be in the NCAA.

However....it's a risk I'm willing to take. The biggest example on that list I disagree with is #3. For one, I think name recognition alone will help recruiting immediately. Two, so long as Cheek, the University, and Hart stay out of the way, I think the staff he could/would build here would be the best staff we've had on the Hill in quite some time. Three, his work-ethic is second to none--the man sleeps 3 hours a night, every night, and is up by 3am studying film FOR MNF, I imagine that would translate to studying film for high school recruits and relentlessly pursuing top-flight talent.

His offense would need to be scaled back, IMO. There's a reason why he liked veteran QB's in the NFL, a la Brad Johnson & Rich Gannon--it's extremely complicated and would truly demand more than the 20 hours per work maximum he would have with college kids. However...I think it COULD work. He's a smart guy...the transition to the 'AA would call for changes in a lot of areas, and that's one area I believe he would modify for college kids.

As for #5--If people can play for Nick Saban, then people can play for Jon Gruden. I don't recall any stories out of Oakland or Tampa about him stepping over and strolling past a player who has passed out or was convulsing (can't recall the exact details but Saban DID do that).

The first two examples will work themselves out within the first 2 seasons he's here. IF (and that's a HUGE if) he does, in fact, coach here, we'll know whether he's here just for kicks or he's as long as we'll have him.

West Coast offense is the only one I see....but that's why you get a really good OC. Gruden would be a beast at the college level...

I guarantee if he can Coach those spoiled brats, he was loved and respected by his players he could coach in college. I wont even discuss recruiting, his name alone plus the allstar staff he would assemble would recruit at an elite level. If indeed his contract has he can't coach in the NFL until 2016 then that gives us 3-4 yrs. Of course that would be voided once he came here, but if he wanted to get back in the nfl he never would have agreed to that part of the contract. On the west coast offense it was mentioned he has been going to all kinds of camps plus hiring a good OC can get us a good offense that works.

I agree on all points. And the article is crap.

The points I disagree with are
-That he couldn't sustain great recruiting. I believe Gruden would build a recruiting machine at TN and would pull elite talent from the get go.
-That he couldn't build a great college staff. What college coach wouldn't want to jump on board with Gruden to help his career. He could build an elite staff IMO.
-Players not responding to his coaching. He would command respect immediatly. Players take tough coaching much better from a coach who commands their respect. These kids would be falling overthemselves to play hard for Gruden.
The point I am neutral on
-That his offense could be too complex/ineffective. This would come down to him being able to adapt and understand he can't do everything he does in the NFL. I believe he would do that and that he would find a way to have a great offense. Also his elite recruiting wouldn't hurt here either.
The part that worries me
- That he would jump back to the NFL in 2-3 years. If any of the above turn out to be too much work or frustrating for Gruden at this level I could see him saying that college isn't for him. While I do think our Program would be in a MUCH better place if he were to be successful for 3 years then go back to the NFL, I really want a coach that can be here and do well for 10 yrs+.
