I've been following Tennessee football for 39 years, since Johnny Majors' first year as HC in 1977. I'm an optimist that loves this university and the teams that have battled on the gridiron over that span. I've seen many ups and downs over those 39 years that put the events of this past week in perspective. Here are my thoughts:

1) Coach Butch Jones needs to take control of this football team as a DECISIVE decision-maker. I'm troubled by reports that he allegedly asked the PLAYERS whether or not Jalen Hurd should play in a football game. The last time I checked, HE is being paid to make those decisions, not the players. If the players felt strongly enough to dispute that decision, that's one thing. But to ASK their advice on what to do...is quite another. Can you imagine Jim Harbaugh or Nick Saban doing that?

2) Jalen Hurd is a disgrace. He quit on his teammates and his coaches, so it was time to say goodbye. As talented as he was, my gut tells me that he was poison to that locker room. No player in his right mind screams at his coach during a football game, regardless of the situation. Furthermore, no player wearing the Power T on his helmet should EVER refuse to enter a football game if he is physically able to do so, or because of a dispute with a player or a coach. DO YOUR JOB! SET THE EXAMPLE! BE A LEADER! The NFL was watching. Character matters.

3) We have to win in the trenches to contend for a championship. As much as we want to blame the skill positions of RB and QB for committing turnovers and negative yardage plays, it takes a TEAM EFFORT for this to happen. I've seen what happens when Josh Dobbs has time to make a decision to throw or run. Those guys up front have to play better, or we may find ourselves on the losing end of more SEC games this year.

4) Stop wanting to fire people! The call to fire our coaching staff every time we lose a football game has to stop. We are a spoiled, pretentious fan base at times. Our hunger to win championships sometimes out-flanks the need to build this program back the right way. And...To the fan(s) who sought out Lane Kiffin after the Alabama game to ask him to come back to coach at this university, I say this: Not only NO, but HELL NO! I'll take Butch Jones any day of the week, and again on Saturdays, over Lane Kiffin...Period. Character matters. Al Davis tried to warn us -- remember?

5) Championship Teams Are Spawned From Championship Player-Leaders. Al Wilson, Peyton Manning, Tee Martin, Billy Ratliff, Deion Grant, Jason Witten. Locker room leaders stamp out poison before it becomes poisonous. They motivate, inspire, and demand the best from one another. They call out quitters and either set them adrift or change their outlook for the better. Derek Barnett, Cam Sutton, Alvin Kamara, Josh Dobbs, Todd Kelly Jr.... are their voices being heard?

Great post and great opinions. After all the hot garbage that's been posted over the past week this is a refreshing view. It's so easy for our fan base to just throw our hands in the air and give up when the going gets tough. I'm hoping this will bring the whole team together and we finish strong!

#2 NFL watching character matters. have you not seen what they get away with.

I have...but I won't point to bad behavior to justify other bad behavior. That's realativism, and it doesn't change the fact that character matters when it comes to consistent winning.

A post that make this much sense really needs to be deleted. It is counterproductive to the circle jerk atmosphere that so many are trying to maintain.

#1 is an issue. He did that because he didn't want to suspend one of the best players on the team before an important game.

Maybe if he gets that down, we won't have to lose three games and have a team meeting every year before we get things figured out. Gotta get things figured out before the season starts.

Look OP, if you are going to post stuff that makes good common sense then you should go to another message board. We only want knee-jerk reactions and bogus claims on this board.[/COLOR]

Sunshine Pumper. Still got beat by a first year head coach with a high school QB and a team that has about as much talent as your local pop warner team. 4th year head coaches with a senior QB and title implications on the line that are coming off a bye week should NEVER get beat. Sorry. Just pointing out the facts.

Got the facts, and you are absolutely right: they are indisputable. I think our disagreement may come in the next step, which I presume, for you, contains the root word "fire" in it. Am I wrong?

I was there with you, Old Guy. And whereas I agree with the post and sentiments expressed therein, WE AINT OLD, brother.

13 years old, and my first trip to Neyland Stadium (Section O) was AMAZING! Sat 84,000 at the time and had the bleachers in the North End zone where the Hill was clearly visible from our horseshoe endzone. The largest venue I'd ever seen at that time was the Walking Horse Showground Arena at Shelbyville! Tennessee played Cal that first game in September 1977. Pat Ryan started at QB but was replaced by Jimmy Streater. We lost that game and went on to finish 4-7. We haven't won that few games since. That's why I thought I'd share my perspective.

No. I do not think it is wise to fire him...yet. I will make my judgment by seasons end with the way these next 4 weeks play out and see what type of team we have. If the players come out with their hair on fire that means Jones still has control over the locker room. Regardless of my opinion (which its mine and doesn't mean nothing to UT or anyone else) but Jones needs to make changes this off season. We need a new OC, Oline coach, WR coach, S&C coach and a QB coach. He does 75% of that I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he is trying to always improve. We can't go into next season with this same staff that's on the team now. Most would agree.

#2 NFL watching character matters. have you not seen what they get away with.

So if youre gonna be bat **** crazy you have to produce. Case in point my Cowboys and Dez Bryant. The boy is the very definition of head case but he will not quit and has heart to spare. He is a warrior.

Enter Greg Hardy. Another head case and sheer locker room poison. And he did not produce. Bye Felicia.

If Jalen is going to be a prima dona he better produce. But he just walked away.

He'll get drafted. But my money is round 6 or 7. Nobody is gonna waste a pick on a back with issues like his. Too many other good backs that you don't get that with and RB really isn't the primary skill position it used to be in the NFL now. WR trumps RB now.

And he'll get drafted as a RB or.an athlete. Not a TE. His body of work is RB. That is what he will get graded on. Whoever takes him could very well try him at TE but I don't think that's how he will get picked.

And frankly Kamara has better hands anyway. Jalen impressed me with his running. I was less than impressed with his hands.

I won't disagree with you, and I respect your opinion. Experience tells me that throwing out entire administrations of football staffs is expensive, detrimental, and sets the program back years in terms of recruiting and stability. I don't mind, however, tweaking a system and staff that's in place to gain an advantage in coming games and seasons. My point was that Coach Jones doesn't have to be an X and O guy if his COORDINATORS are. He has to be a LEADER -- decisive, steady, consistent, and oozing with integrity. I believe he meets most of those, but not all. The part I question is the "injuries" sustained by Jalen Hurd, and how they were spun vs. just making a decision and telling us the truth.

Great post - although not sure I totally agree on #1. I've seen coaches take that approach before when dealing with a character like Hurd. That approach brings team unity and gives them a sense of control. Furthermore, it prevents further dividing a team if they didn't agree with his decision.

Nice points. I disagree with his inability to play TE because Antonio Gates' body of work was on the BASKETBALL court, and you see the results he garnered. He may be an exception, and I'm sure you're thinking along those lines. Just be careful with casting too much doubt on Hurd's ability to play on the end of the line. He is big, strong, fairly fast, and can block well. If he works on routes, catching the ball, and "uncentering" himself from how the world rotates about its axis, he'll be ok.
