Do you think the game for the players and coaches has lost the rivalry feel since both schools have coaches that did not play in the game? Looking back some 40 years it seems to me the fans have kept up the rivalry but the coaches look at it as just another SEC game. I think when we both we had coaches that played in the game then became coaches it had a different feel.

It had a different feel for me from 1995-2006. It's lost a rivalry feel because you guys have won 8 in a row but yes I get what you are saying and it's probably accurate.

Sadly this is the future of college football, less former players, more mercenaries as coaches. Clearly this game does not mean as much to Butch as it did Phil. He lived for this game, and I loved how we were extremely motivated every time we took the field against Alabama.

I think come game week the players on both sides sense there's something different about this game. I always hear a quote or an anecdote every year that gives me hope that the young guys still get it.

I don't sense the excitement this year. Hype hasn't worked out so well for the Vols-- and the team and coaches have been lowkey since UGA. I miss the anticipation of Bama Week from a decade ago... or maybe I just miss winning.

Both coaches get the rivalry and appreciate it. CBJ because every large UT booster cares more about beating Bama than Florida, so he has no choice but to make that his crowning achievement. Saban respects it as well..... That's why he's fought for the UT Bama game to stay locked in (all the while Les Miles jawing at pressers about how much easier Bama's schedule has been because of UT). Saban has been around long enough to know that everything goes in cycles in the SEC and there will come a time in the very near future where we will be dominating the series again (likely when he retires!) so no reason to talk smack or disband the game altogether.

It's definitely been a game where you guys can safely pencil in a "W" the past couple years.

As an outsider, i think the biggest problem is the game has not been nationally relevant, but what feels like a handful of times in the last 30 years or so. Maybe, longer.

The game is built on the legacy of the two programs with the most SEC titles, but, I can't remember too many, must see TV encounters.

Off the top of my head.....1989 and 1999

I think it has more to do with going to divisions. I think younger folks probably feel like (for us) UF or UGA are at least "more important" than the Bama game. I see your point on the coaches, they have to be taught the history as opposed to having lived it and are they able to express the importance of the rivalry to the players as a Majors or Fulmer, maybe not. Can those guys be brought in. Certainly.

In fact, if I was one of those Vols Films honchos, I'd get that on film to save for the future...you know if they can spare the time from the hype videos.

It's one of the greatest rivalries in CFB

Just today, a friend of mine, who is an Alabama fan said that this game means more than any game, including Auburn

We have mutual hate for each other, but also respect for the tradition of the 3rd Saturday

With that said, Screw Bama

The fact that you have had your attention elsewhere during your lifetime perhaps has something to do with what you remember about UT vs. Bama. Sample some of the following games, young grasshopper. Watch and learn what a real college football rivalry is about.

I don't think the coaches have much to do with it, but recently it hasn't been much of a competition. Once UT can challenge consistently, then it will be more fun.

look up the definition of a RIVAL and see if it applies to the way u feel or to how the fans in general want the outcome to be.

I think you missed the point. First of all, there are references to 1951, 1967 and 1968. All are more than 35 years ago which was what I was addressing.

Secondly, I did not say there weren't outstanding games played or games that haven't been nationally televised.

I said the games largely have not been "nationally relevant".

2003, 2004, 2006, and 2009 all were games where only one participant was ranked.

That's why I made reference to 1989 and 1999, where there were conference and national implications on the line for both teams.

I say we either take it back to the "Third Saturday" every year, or we get rid of playing them every year. If this is still the rivalry game then it should be on the third Saturday.

Edit: someone give me a "like" I am on 666 and do not wish to stay there.

1991-1996 were big games with national and conference implications for both teams. We were down a bit in 1994 but those early 90's games were close and the rivalry was fierce.

You will not get a like for the bolded part of your post. Post Bama Sucks on a different thread for a like.

Anyone who says it's not relevant, because only one team has a chance to win a NC or conference championship, doesn't 'GET' what 'IT' is really all about. It is the VOLS vs the TIDE. I don't give a damn if we're both 0-6. It's the BIG DAMN ORANGE vs. The ALABAMA CRIMSON DAMN TIDE. It will always be HUGE.

With regard to my post, I was speaking about the impact of the rivalry outside of the two participants.

Obviously, every rivalry is of utmost importance to those with direct ties to the game.

Not directed at you at all. I realize you are a gator and probably have rivalry games that no one understands. I know FLA-GA, FLA-FSU, etc. are big, but UT / UA stands the test of time as one of the biggest games in college football history, and not just to UT / UA fans, but to anyone who understands college football.
