I have an Arcade unit & every once in a while the disc drive refuses to acknowledge that there's a game in it. I have to try a dozen games before it will start to work again.

My question is...Can I replace this disc drive with the one in my dead 360 or will each drive only work with the box it came in?

You may now answer.

Chad I'm sure Dr. and BearCat can help you...but I think you can switch them out.. you have to extract your key to the old one and spoof your new drive with it i believe.

i believe you're right gator, it's not just a simple switch them out, each drive is married to that mother board and best i remember reading on it, i think there is something you physically take out of the bad drive and switch out to the good drive to keep them married together. i'll look around and see what i can find out on it.

Wonder if some compressed air would help. Also, might want to try a POTS adjustment on the drive before going through the whole process of swapping. Turning it up a tiny bit might help. If the drive is hacked and used with burned discs, these can be a bit harder to read and should probably be the first disc to stop working.

Never swapped a drive, but it's certainly not just plug and play. xbox-scene would probably be the best play to figure it out.

I have never had to spoof a drive but scene has a lot of tutorials and also robingoods playground has some good ones as well. They also have videos on how to do it

I finally got fed up with my Arcade unit today & cracked open my old 360 & fixed it for the second time.

The first time I fixed it, it only lasted about a month or so. What's the usual lasting time?

....and for some reason I have more & more extra parts left over every time after I take it apart...weird.

The extra parts might be why it only last a month lol. If it rrod again, I would leave the external case off and only have the tray. I did that with mine and it has worked ever since
