'26 TN CB Javonte Smith (Tennessee commit)

feels like there are a ton of undertated 3 stars with lots of p4 offers
I can’t remember In-State DBs being this deep in any given year.

Chaston Smith- committed to Notre Dame
Caden Harris- Committed to Georgia
Justin Hopkins- committed to Minnesota
Craig Tutt- beast in any year!

None of them are Vol commits and most other years there would be some serious hand wringing, by the majority.

But Theodore and Anderson are high caliber DBs especially their skillset at CB. Then Thompson has great speed at safety.

Then we hopefully get Javonte Smith at CB. Low ranked 3 star with SEC offers. Then you see why because he’s blazing fast with great hands.

He could definitely still pick us here shortly. FWIW though he’s visited Missouri three times to Knoxville once and they also have no CB commits whereas we already have two.

In the portal era this is not a kid you lose sleep over.

I just want to make sure I get my negavol responses lined up correctly …
* If this kid picks us: what the heck is this staff doing?! Are we determined to only recruit 3 stars?! We will never be able to compete for anything !

*If this kid picks Mizzou: What the heck is this staff doing?! We can’t let a prized in state recruit like this kid go to one of our SEC rivals! We will never be able to compete for anything!

The Scout

Smith is a naturally gifted athlete with all of the attributes Tennessee looks for in a defensive back. He has offers to play wide receiver and defensive back at a Power 4 level, including in the SEC. He is a bit raw in his craft, but right away on tape, his explosive jumps out on tape. He has a natural ability to track the football given his receiver back ground, but more importantly, he shows excellent ability to recover and make up ground as a defensive back. He is deceivingly long and uses that to his advantage.

Smith is not going to jump off the charts from a rankings stand point, but he has a very nice ceiling and is a defensive back that fits the mold for what Tennessee likes to recruit from the high school ranks.

What does this mean?

Arkansas made this tough down the stretch. If you watch Smith’s film, you can tell he is a natural with the football in his hands, and the Razorbacks offered that opportunity. For Tennessee to be able to overcome that and land his commitment is a nice win. The Vols got longer and faster at defensive back again today, much like with the additions of Jamyan Theodore and Zaydyn Anderson. Smith is another nice win on the recruiting trail for Tennessee in the secondary.

So what is next?

Now, all eyes turn to Kell High School. Four-star linebacker Brayden Rouse will make his college decision at 7 pm eastern time tonight. Then, on Wednesday afternoon, Rouse’s teammate, versatile safety prospect Jowell Combay is set to make his commitment announcement. The Vols are heavily involved with both down the stretch and are looking to close out the two key Peach State recruitments.
