The way Tennessee recruiting has exploded lately (particularly metro Nashville) and the emphasis we will always place in Florida and Georgia, those will likely always be the states where most of our players hail from. The fact that we border 8 states and have a national brand where we can and have recruited good players from non border states like California, Louisiana, Texas, Illinois, and Ohio means that we have access to guys everywhere.

I want to know what states you guys think are the 3 most important states, excluding Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia for our recruiting going forward.

I'd say North Carolina, Virginia, and Texas. I just see Butch owning that fertile Norfolk/Virginia Beach area as well as North Carolina and I think Texas could be big for us going forward.

South Carolina
North Carolina
Virginia

Exactly what I was thinking.

We will see some Ohio, Michigan and Illinois guys with our staffs connections but the Carolinas and Virginia have a lot
Of good players(as does Ohio but buckeye bias)and are closer.

VA NC and Midwestern maybe Illinois? Interesting thread. I'm hoping the formula is Tennessee top 8-10 and cherry pick from whoever we want :)

Exactly. That's what is so important about dominating the in-state recruiting and hopefully getting a good stranglehold back in Memphis, as there will likely be 2-4 of the top 10 in-state players from there depending on the year. Get the guys you want from Tennessee and then cherry pick which guys you want from out of state.

I could see Butch taking the number 1 player in Ohio away from the bucks at some point. It'd have to be in a year when that player isn't from Glenville.

1. North Carolina: Close proximity, and a good amount of strong HS programs.

2. Virginia: Same notation.

3. Illinois: The reason I chose them over Texas is the number of in-state schools you have to compete with. That does not mean I would ignore Texas, but would think that Tennessee would be on somewhat more equal ground there.

In the end, I would like Tennessee to have a footprint in as many strong states as possible.

A few SEC states that haven't been mentioned are Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Tennessee doesn't have the talent that Louisiana has, but having a recruiting fence around their state like LSU has is what you shoot for as a premier state school. Kind of same deal with Alabama and Auburn. Ole Miss is starting to dominate their in-state recruiting as well.

If we can dominate Tennessee and get early commits from Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia kids and start seeing success on the field then we could start going head to head with the LSUs, Bamas, and even Ole Miss for their top in-state kids. Until then it looks like we won't get many kids from those states because we don't want to settle for the "leftovers." That being said I really like Gavin Bryant and really hope we keep Cory Thomas.

I agree with South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia. If I had to go with a fourth state, I think I would pick Mississippi. Historically, I think we can go head to head better with Ole Miss and Miss St than the Bama and Louisiana schools.

Texas and California in terms of talent produced annually. Illinois and Ohio in terms of where to look going forward.

There is a whos who list of great vols from these 3 states. I might be wrong but I thought Fulmer and his staff got away from these 3 states in the latter years.
Good representation of those stats in the starting lineup this game in 06. Mainly guys from the 02-04 signing classes so towards the later Fulmer days. Man I miss Cut.

Seeing as how CBJ has ties to the Midwest, and has done a good job recruiting that part of the country, I think you'd have to throw Illinois in there. The others would be NC VA IMO.

North Carolina, Virginia and Ohio

I think with this coaching staffs connections in the Ohio area we could see a consistant flow of two to three recruits from the area a year.

Agreed. Teddy Ginn SR doesn't even try to hide his bias and pushing players to OSU. It shouldn't be legal. I bet he tries his damnedest to monitor who his players talk to

IMO

Georgia - Borders, has Vol fans, a lot of kids hate UGA, and Richt sucks at keeping them in state

Ohio - Staff knows the area and HS coaches, closest SEC programs are UK, UT and Vandy and we need to win those.

Virginia - has been producing good talent and is close by. We can will battles against VT and UVA

I would like to say states like FL, AL and LA, but those kids grow up fans of the home team and are harder to pull.

Really impressive that Butch was able to keep Saban out of Tennessee this year. Especially with guys like Mosley, Hurd, TKJ, and Malone. Alabama has that national brand that we have, they've just had more success recently. The diversity of their class being from all over the country is how ours could be soon. So much talent all over the country, and no state will be ignored or avoid.
