Notable stats OP butt.....if Sal is still DC in 2013 I think we are in the same shape we are now. Conklin IMO will be the one taking over as Dc and I believe we will be better off for it.

Why did you leave out Texas A&M in 2011? They were still running the 3-4 with the same DC.

They went 7-6 and gave up 28.1 points a game, by the way.

Some of those results are pretty good.Kinda ticks me off that we can't play like that.

Why make the comparison, we rarely line up in a 3-4 anyway...

Hey now!! The excuses are running out. They have to try to point to anything they can.

How about Maryland this year? They put in the 3-4 this season. They gave up 457 yards a game in 2011. This year they are giving up 301 yards a game.

They gave up 34.7 points per game in 2011. 21.3 this year.

So on average, defenses who run a 3-4 cut their points allowed by about a third in the second year. If the same holds true for Sal if he stays, we would average somewhere in the mid 20s in points allowed next year. Not good enough in the SEC, so no thanks.

I think in our case its a combination of not having the right personnel to run it coupled with less than stellar coaching. Its obvious there is a major disconnect between the coaches and players because the players just arent grasping the concepts mentally. Even if our personnel isnt perfect for this d they still shouldnt be this bad. And when we do run other alignments they are familiar with they still are bad.

Im starting to think sunseri is the clawson of defense.

Yes we do unless we are spread out and go into nickle/dime. To the uninitiated the 34 can sometimes look a lot like the 43 or even a 52 when linebackers line up on the LOS but responsibilities and scheme is still totally different. I have seen us go into 4 down linemen for extended periods only when teams go to a spread type offense.

A 34 is a much more complex defense to play for everyone except the NT and DE's and even they play different roles than they do in a 43. Our Dline has executed pretty much how they should the flaws have been in the back 8. Linebackers are not in the right positions and guys in the secondary cant man up guys and cover the zones underneath at the same time leading to us getting gashed over the middle all the time on both runs and passes.

The trend of defenses changing from 43 to 34 and struggling is not just at the collegiate level it happens the same in the NFL also. Personnel matters a lot. You see especially in free agency how a guy moves from a 34 to a 43 or 43 to 34 and goes from hero to zero or vice versa. Some good examples would be Johnathan Vilma and Albert Haynesworth but there are many stories like that all the time.

We do not have the correct personnel for a 34 yet especially at linebacker and the secondary. Basically al our linebackers are either OLB's with ILB speed or ILB's with OLB size. The 2 linebackers we lost around NSD were a devastating blow IMHO.

Using the Troy game though to represent this defense is a great disservice though. That game was an outlier and the defense is not that bad. What happened was a product of the game being a shootout. if our defense was really anywhere near that bad we wouldn't have made 4 of our 5 losses in SEC play as competitive as they were. These guys just have to all make 1 or 2 less mistakes a game and this defense looks totally different.

I don't think the change in scheme has anything to do with the yards allowed.
What you have to ask yourself is why did they make a change in the first place?
The question I would have is what were the stats the year prior to switching.
Anyway, none of those teams were as abysmal as UT. Starting to sound as if Sunseri is being shown the door, or made to feel very unwelcome. I don't see turning it around in a week.

Exactly this whole 3-4 thing is the most over hyped non story in UT history. I don't know about rarely but like most teams are defense is multiple. The problem is how the defense is being coached not what the defense is. I like Sal alot but just like Dooley he wasn't ready to be a defensive coordinator at an SEC school. Tennessee seems to be overlooking experience when they are interviewing these guys.

Hello Mr. Gates I'm applying for the software programmer position you have open. No sir I've never actually been a programmer per se but I have downloaded a lot of music from Itunes.

Am I to believe that we're going to explode with 10 or 11 wins next year? I seriously doubt it...

did not have the "right" personnel to run the 3-4

did not have an experienced DC to implement the 3-4

so what genius decided that this was the year for the 3-4 at UT?

The common denominator is all those schools have good coaching staffs and can recruit. Dooley cant do either
