I agree with this, every fan base makes huge assumptions after watching the opening game. Whether, it’s oh no, we suck again, or by definition, we are going to win em all by beating the 323rd best team named blah blah state 53-6 (fla fans). The first game is a starting point, not the finish line and you can’t judge the whole season on one game. UT will look totally different by the last game.

WEST VIRGINIA ...
Will Grier made an early-season Heisman statement. Against Tennessee, Grier threw for 429 yards and five touchdowns in a 40-14 win by the No. 17 Mountaineers. It’s an impressive win. But it’s also going to be blown out of proportion. This Volunteer team is more akin to last season’s 4-8 group than to the program’s contenders of the past. Jeremey Pruitt inherited a program with plenty of problems, including a leaky defense, which Grier lit up. West Virginia still must prove it can defend against an elite offense, and Tennessee is far from that. By the way, Jarrett Guarantano had a pretty good day at 19 of 25 for 172 yards and touchdown. In the Big 12, West Virginia is going to face seven or eight quarterbacks better than him.

Tn D made WV look better than what they are. They had WR running around all day wide open and Tn dbs never once looked back for the ball. They still have not learned how to tackle. The OL got better as the game went on but still are a problem. I remember people saying that WV will have no ideal what Tn is going to do on offense ,which was true but from the looks of it , I dont think Tn own offense knew what they were doing on the first 3-4 series. All they can do is get better. I hope

After speaking with several WV fans yesterday, I was shocked to find they actually think this is the year to beat Alabama and go to the National Championship game.

Most of our backfield yesterday were true freshman, playing against some of college football's best WR combos in the country. It was some players first college football game yesterday. Not saying I'm happy but I will say there's some potential. I can only hope it's just the jitters. Let's see how our coaches adjust & get ready for our next game.

Alabama somehow looks even more electric this year than they did last season. Tua might be a better college QB than Will Grier. He is far and away better than Jalen Hurts. And as always, Alabama’s defense looks every bit as elite as most years. West Virginia would lose by 24 to Bama.

P.S. Before a fit is thrown about me claiming Tua is better than Grier. Notice i said college QB. Grier makes elite throws. But Tua’s passes last night were nearly as good and his ability to turn a busted play into a huge gain is on another level. That Alabama offense looks neigh unstoppable.

I’m sure he does. And 247 was 100% right. Our team right now is bloody awful and beating it senseless is nowhere near a legit litmus test for how good WVa is or isn’t.

Our D is bloody awful, for sure. I had hoped that CJP could change the soft culture he inherited there, but he has to find some big bodies in front 3 and 7 with some attitude and skill to do it. That looked like 2017 redux on the defensive side of the ball against WV. He has a couple of weeks to give some new guys a trial and I bet he does. The offense actually showed some positives going forward. The 2nd qtr 8 minute + drive was very good. I get a feeling this OL is going to find some continuity and get better. It's still the D that remains the huge concern. Unless they can find some linemen who can bring pressure, the young DBs are going to get torched by several QBs in several games to come.

It also is a negative that we do not have a true nose. We just have a body playing there now. That body was recruited to play DT and not nose. Give it a little time folks.

Most of the time they were forced into a 4-2 with the nickel back. We know what good linemen look like. We just don't have one currently showing up. Paging Derek Barnett to the ER, stat.

OP, you do realize that 247 is bashing the heck out of us, right?

It isn't bashing to state facts. We're not a good team and haven't been for a while. WV really can't take much from this game except they handily beat a team they reasonably were expected to beat handily. Just the facts.
