Until he hurt his shoulder, Henderson looked like he might break out too...Big fan of adding all the HS talent you can that's top 100 rated. Never know who can immediately help or not until you get them on campus.
I would have never guessed Evans or Brown both would play as well as they did this year. Washington is higher rated than both were too and he's higher rated than Scott even. Seems like he would need to get on the Nate Ament diet/workout ASAP but if they can add good weight to his frame he's got all the potential in the world.
I am not saying don't recruit any high schoolers anymore but if you look at true freshman Tennessee has recruited the last couple of years, only a few made an impact as freshman. Other schools have/will see the benefits of these players after taking a year under Barnes to mature and develop.Big fan of adding all the HS talent you can that's top 100 rated. Another way to look at it... Evans and Brown were really good depth players for us last year. If the going rate for those HS players is lower than similar transfers, there might be a bunch that are well worth the money even if they only stay for a year.I am not saying don't recruit any high schoolers anymore but if you look at true freshman Tennessee has recruited the last couple of years, only a few made an impact as freshman. 2024- Cam Carr, Freddie Dillione, JP and Cade. All gone-
2025- Amari Evans, Clarence Massamba- gone- Dewayne Brown and Troy Henderson back for another year. Nate Ament likely gone.
Unless a high school player is truly exceptional, it doesn't seem like many will contribute as true freshman under Rick Barnes. I don't like it but it seems like the best investments are taking guys that have a couple of years of college basketball under their belt, are a known commodity, and can have an immediate impact.
Fair point. I don't know how these costs compare.Another way to look at it... Evans and Brown were really good depth players for us last year. As BTO pointed out yesterday, I think you have to take a few every year because they are cheaper for the budget. Then, when you have a guy like ZZ or Evans that contribute in year one, it's a bonus. Even Brown contributed this year. I am sure Amari Evans was cheaper than Amare Abram last year. Obviously, you want to try to retain the ones that develop, but apparently, Evans was asking for too much.I am not saying don't recruit any high schoolers anymore but if you look at true freshman Tennessee has recruited the last couple of years, only a few made an impact as freshman. All else being equal, it's a no-brainer; but the thing is, you can get high schoolers for a whole lot less money (except maybe top 15 guys). It's a good way to fill out the roster.I am not saying don't recruit any high schoolers anymore but if you look at true freshman Tennessee has recruited the last couple of years, only a few made an impact as freshman. His ceiling is what is enticing. His possibility to produce this season seems very minimal. Physically and mentally/emotionally he will see a big adjustment period to the expectations inside the UT program.People sleeping on Washington, he real versatile & real athletic. could see him as a energy guy off the bench
