2026 Vols Basketball Target List

Yea, I had similar thoughts…obviously with the Phillips injury, Okpara missing some time and Estrella nursing injuries on and off they were thin, but pretty shocking still. My hope is that Estrella and Ament are good to go, Okpara had looked as good as he had all year recently, and we see very minimal of Carey going forward. The advanced stats with him on/off the court are truly shocking to see, he’s literally one of the least efficient posts in the country.
His per game numbers are pretty similar across all three years and levels of play. But the efficiency has tanked in an almost comical way.

He shot 72.3% from 2 at JMU as a freshman. Sure, some will say, "Well, it's JMU". And it did take a dip at Vandy, last year, down to 54.5% on a ⅓ more attempts. But he's down to 47.6%, this season. When you think about where his shots predominantly come from, that is unthinkable. That could partially be mitigated if he hit 75% from the line, but he's also a career-worst 49.5% from there, now. Just a bad, bad offensive basketball player.

That 2pt% is 37.9% in SEC play, that is so bad it’s hard to actually fathom, it would be a better idea for him to kick it out and let Boswell shoot a 3 left handed rather than him try and finish down low.

But then how would we gloat about our offensive rebounding prowess without all the rebounds off his missed bunnies?!?!?!

Everybody knows I've been pounding the JP drum all season (if/when he's healthy he's double-double threat every game) so def want Carey's mpg to go down - ride with Felix/JP/Brown.

My assumption re: the before/after pics is that the plan all along was to have him be a "poor man's" Grant Williams and/or Tobe hence the weight gain since they knew he lacks a vert and quickness...this would explain why CRB and staff keep giving him every oppy to make it work.

I've had many a game screaming to kick it out for an open 3 or worst case set it back up

It’s pretty wild, if you just remove Carey from the equation everything looks A LOT better…his shooting % at every level are gross and bring dork the whole team, he’s a solid rebounder but not actually that much better than the other bigs and how many of his rebounds are of the Angel Reese variety? (Off his own miss)
They're called Me-bounds. Angel Reese and Jalen Carey are two of the best Mebounders of all-time.

I say Boswell at 2 because of the roster situation. Evans already proven he can play the 3. I don't think Boswell has played the 3 and if he has, it wasn't much at all.
Boswell hasn't played the 3 bc of an anomaly with having Nate Ament. Barnes usually has that defensive anchor at the 3 with a shooting option at the 2

I don’t think extra body fat helps a basketball post player similar to how that extra mass can help an interior lineman in football. Tobe is much leaner than Carey.

I’ve been riding that JP train with you and I still believe he’s one of the 3 pillars to our offense if we’re clicking. He’s really talented when he can string together several weeks of being healthy and gets in his comfort zone.

I’m over Carey and would tell him there’s no $NIL for him next season. Whatever we paid him, I’d be shocked if we couldn’t do better with that money. I thought how he played against us last year at Vandy was what we’d get all season but it just didn’t happen for some reason? Things that seem reasonable don’t always work out.

Agreed Tobe is leaner but he's also very, very strong. I also agree they weren't trying to add fat...I'm sure the intent was to add "good" weight for strength but it likely magnified his lack of athleticism.

I still can't believe how many of our posters didn't account for a kid coming off what was almost a career-ending injury that was touch and go based on reports prior to the season starting. He's likely a walking double-double if he can stay healthy and a full offseason will only help his vert and lateral quickness. I easily see All SEC for him IF he can stay healthy.

Re: Carey...I have to think he's not happy with this year. His minutes were approaching single digits during our run and before JP's injury. He seemed like a kid who would thrive under CRB but that hasn't happened this year.

Biggest disappointment on the team by far.

Tyler Lundblade from Belmont entered the portal. No clue if he’s any good, but he did win Player of the Year in that conference.

Another Tyson?

He's not near the athlete Dalton Knecht was, nor is he that kind three-level scorer. But he can create his own shot in the mid-range, and has an ultra-quick release. Hits off-balanced 3s with ease. Shot 48% from 3 last season. That dipped to 40.6% this year, which is still excellent. Shot 44% from 3 in two years at Belmont on 499 attempts. Also shot 94% from the FT line on 145 attempts.

We could do a lot worse. I'd take him over any guard we currently employ outside of Gillespie and maybe Evans.
