2023 Roster Evolving 1/15/23

I would bet a bushel of Rooster Sandwiches that the roster at the beginning of this post changes by 25% between now and kickoff next Fall. No longer a static world anymore - so much fluidity that changes are bound to happen between NIL issues, the all important transfer portal plus, some kids changing their commitments. Sure will be enough fodder to keep us interested here on VN for quite some time.

Added Tillman to the list as a SR who’s going to NFL. Trying to put seniors on this list who have eligibility left. Is there anyone I left off…especially those who plan to play out the extra Covid year?

I was literally about to type up a thread asking for info about the 2023 roster because I do not understand or have the info on which seniors (who still have optional time available to them) are staying or going. I keep my own spreadsheet and love to keep everything up to date through the recruiting process.

Can you tell me what the single or double asterisk beside the names mean?

Cameron Seldon could end up anywhere from WR, RB, or TE on offense to LB or Safety on defense. Good athlete - I hope we find a spot that works for him and for us.

Well the intent was to use the asterisk for guys who have used a redshirt year. I’m not 100% sure who - if any - of those guys get an extra year. The double asterisk I am certain those guys are using their extra year in 2023 so that will be their final season

EDIT - Thanks to input from others I made an attempt….

Here’s what I think we have plus a couple more recruits and portal adds. Obviously the guys listed as NFL could potentially return if eligibility is there along with the portal kids.

Let me know what I’ve missed…pretty sure I’ve ‘mis-positioned’ a couple. Also not sure about some of the seniors who would still have eligibility. Need help there.

** My quick thought - that LB group looks thin. Need a portal guy and/or convert someone looking to the future

Hard to grasp there are so many Db's and it's the teams worst position group.

Somebody in the recruiting forum did an analysis on our DBs based on star ratings (most recent whether HS, JUCO)

Of the 14 scholarship DBs he counted on our roster at that time...mostly Pruitt guys...our LOWEST rated DB coming in the 23 class is ranked higher than 11 out of 14 DBs already on the roster.

We have 7 or 8 new DBs in the 2023 class. That means nearly all of them are ranked higher than the guys currently here. BIG difference in raw talent and success at the HS level versus the 14 guys we have now.

I completely understand that recruiting services are sometimes wrong. Also that talent must be developed well to prosper in the SEC. I am still VERY excited about the 2023 DBs...we spent about 1/3 of our entire scholarships (8/25) on the secondary. It was obviously a huge need, and we did a GREAT job of filling needs in this class.

Makes sense, I didn’t really look at the names at all. Didn’t occur to me we’d be talking about non-scholarship players.
