2020 Presidential Race

Do you think if Trump thought espousing socialist ideals would get him re-elected he would? I do with zero doubt.

Why should I question a hypothetical? If he did, I would ditch him.
I will say, he is obviously not a contortionist like most politicians. He is following or mostly following his campaign promises. If not his elective base would not still be so supportive.

About the only policy belief I can say he definitely believes in his heart is that he likes tariffs/protectionism. On most other stuff he'll go with whatever.

His elective base is making excuses for him and riding the economy high. That economy high was already trending in the direction. He hasn’t followed through on any of his promises. I wouldn’t hire him to work for me and I bet you wouldn’t either. And before we do the dance, I wouldn’t have hired Obama either.

Obviously relative peace and prosperity are tops on the list. As far as promises, if that is what you believe, then so be it. I tend to focus on macro policy anyways.
And as far as dancing, I am glad we are not because I am as bad as Elaine Benes.

That's pretty sobering and that sort of thinking has wrecked America.

I mean less than two decades after a high school kid in Indiana wrote an essay:

* we are now led by an autocratic strongman who manipulates free markets on his whimsy
* we are now led by an autocratic strongman who papers over the effects of his meddling by borrowing money from communist China at obscene rates
* we are now led by an autocratic strongman who bails out farmers who no longer have a place to sell their goods because of his lack of trust in capitalist markets

Clearly, someone needs to invent a time machine and go back to 2000 to stop Pete from being as socialist as the average teenager in America before capitalism dies an ugly death.

Republicans are leading the country to socialism

Autocratic strongman? You are touched in the head.
Chinese holdings of our debt has been over $1 trillion since 2010 and has hardly changed.
Framer subsidies go way beyond and before Trump.
And yes, Pete is a diehard socialist.

Pretty sure Biden isn’t making young people a cornerstone of his coalition.

Eugene McCarthy was the first and last nominee to make young people the cornerstone of his coalition.

Still, that doesn't mean you tell meandering Cornpop stories and use slogans that would be more fitting as the text cards in a silent cartoon.

Autocratic strongman describes Trump's view of the president's role far better than the oath he took to the Constitution.

Farm subsidies are intrinsically socialist, and Trump has gone two steps beyond that into full hand outs. If you are down with that, just admit you don't really hate socialism as much as you claim.

I'm sure Pete is socialist. There seems to be little else being offered in America these days. It is either welfare for the masses or welfare for the Plutocrats like Trump who don't even pay taxes.

No wonder most Americans have tuned out from this freak show.

Your right, these mind-bending deficits aren't financed by Chinese money since they need to uncouple from the dollar.

I must have been thinking of Jared Kushner.

For being an autocrat, he sure is not good at it being impeached and all.
We can nitpick policy all day and find fault with any candidate. What I find disturbing is the views of some who are looking for the perfect candidate, which is not possible, so pick some litmus tests and ride them. To consider Trump a socialist is just disingenuous.

@zeppelin128

I was too lazy to go back and find it ITT but I remember you talking about how Pete ended Tulsi's campaign. Can you remind me how? Or what exactly he said? A link would work.

You think my issue with Trump is that I expect a candidate to be perfect? That gave me the kind of belly laugh that keeps me coming back to the politics forum. Thank you, my friend

I honestly think Trump hurts himself more than anyone with his autocratic tendencies. His market-crashing statement this morning that no deal would happen with China unless he deemed it acceptable was the perfect example. He is the only policy-making apparatus left in the U.S. Government and reminds us constantly. Too bad he changes his mind every two minutes.

Hell, he can't even allow Congressionally-appropriated military aid to go forward without trying to get some personal benefit. Like all wannabe strongmen, he is just a petulant child throwing a tantrum at the end of the day. This is truly the Verruca Salt Presidency.

Which of his campaign promises is he actually following through on?
