2019 Vols vs 2022 Vols

Now that this thread has me thinking, assuming everyone is back next year except Chandler, Fulkerson and Bailey…is 2023 team potentially better than 2022? If we added more more piece, maybe an athletic 4 or another combo guard transfer, either who could create their own offense when needed off the dribble.

Aidoo and BHH should improve. A healthy Nkamhoua. Even Plavsic has been serviceable at times. Tamba for depth. Does JJJ show consistency over a full season with his offense now that he has a mid-range game as shown these last 10 games? Does Powell show up? Mashack and/or Diboundje possibly provide another athletic wing? Vescovi is Mr. Reliable. Can Ziegler develop a floater in the lane to go along with his “best defender under 6’0 in the country” status? Edwards is likely to play a lot of minutes off the bench at either guard position. Potentially better depth than we have now assuming everyone continues to improve. No great scorer across the lineup but a number of capable scorers who could smell 9 to 12 pts per game. Just need one more alpha male who can get buckets.

Will be interesting to see what transfer portal looks like after the season is over.

Bailey decided not to participate in Senior Day on Saturday. He could return as a super senior and I think that having an extra upperclassman isn’t a bad idea. The only upperclassmen returning will be Uros, Olivier, and MAYBE Santi and Josiah. Powell will be a junior with 3 years of eligibility left, limited minutes, and less than a year in CRB’s program as of today.

The Arkansas game ended with TN having a 2 possession lead and Bailey diving to the floor after a loose ball. He’s grown as an important member of this team even since November.

Yep saw that. I’m wondering if he transfers. Always happens each year and frankly it may be better for him if he does. He isn’t going to take minutes away from Vescovi or Ziegler and young ones may be better than him too. Overall this season he has had very few shining moments and his stats don’t lie. Lost over half his minutes from last year and dropped from about 11 pts per game to 3. Staggering regression. That is one of the biggest mysteries for the year. 2021 Bailey shows up and we win 2 more games. He only played one minute against Arkansas.

This is a tough one.

I think the game would be close but I would still take the 2019 team.

I think the sheer star power of Grant Williams is too much to handle. That guy was a beast in every single game he played in, surreal

Next year's team should be even better. Hopefully though we can get a solid scorer in the transfer portal, that is one thing this team is missing. Someone who is a walking bucket that will get you 20 points every night

Some of y’all are way too nostalgic, that team had some great players but they crapped the bed in some really big games. Getting embarrassed by Auburn in the SEC tournament, squeaking past the first two rounds of NCAA tournament, and getting outplayed by Purdue for most of their final game. That was a great team in January not in March unfortunately. This team may be the exact opposite which hopefully will pay off in the tournament

Who wins at TBA? Both went undefeated at home.

2021-2022 Vols vs 2018-2019 Vols

On paper, I would take the Schofield, Bone, Williams team but when you really look at the metrics and whatnot, I think it’d be extremely close.

Thoughts?
Depends on when they play in my opinion. If they play at the end of the season this year’s team. If they play midpoint or earlier I say the 18-19 team. Both were fun to watch. The Fulky vs Fulky matchup would be fun.

Big question is how our 3pt defense was in 18-19. That would tell a lot.

I'm taking the 18-19 squad solely because of the inside game. Imo Bone and Turner match up well with KC and ZZ as far as athleticism goes. I just don't see this years team being able to get off enough 3s.

Butttttt Bone/Turner vs KC/ZZ would be fun to watch.
I think Bone’s legs were faster, but KC’s hands are faster. That would be a cool matchup for sure.

Are some people confusing teams in this thread. The 2018-19 lost to Purdue and Alexander played. The previous year he got hurt and we lost to Sister Jean.

I think folks are forgetting how well Bone played his junior season. Shot 35.5% from 3, free throws 85.5%, 46.5 field goal %, 3.2 rebounds a game, 5.8 assists a game, 0.7 steals a game, and 13.5 points a game where he was the 3rd or 4th option. Second team SEC and set the UT all time assists/to ratio at 2.91.

Chandler to date is 35.6% from 3, free throws 60.7%, 45.6 field goal %, 3.2 rebounds, 4.55 assists a game, 13.7 points a game, 2.2 steals a game, and 1.73 assists/to ratio.

Bone was strong on ft’s and our best pg ever at not turning the ball over. Chandler is elite at steals and driving the lane although Bone was also very good there. All the other numbers are fairly close.

Of course this is a comparison of a junior Bone to a freshman Chandler but I’d call them a draw. SV vs LT is a draw to me, maybe slight edge to SV. Admiral over JJJ. GW way better than Fulky. Alexander much better than Uros or Aidoo. Bowden better than ZZZ. 6 vs 6 this year’s team isn’t that close IMO. Add in 7-10 and it’s closer but I’d still go with 2019. JMO

2019 team for me, more experienced, more well-rounded with an Alpha (Williams) to grind out points if necessary.

Yeah, I agree. Other than free throw % (Chandler) they are both comparably great. I was just pointing out the one difference that really stood out to me. It would be cool if KC had a chance to become a junior at UT, but I’m not sure we’ll ever get to make an apples to apples comparison.

The differences are more than free throws. KC is much better at steals. Bone was much better at shooting free throws and not turning the ball over. All other numbers are comparable.
