What Brian Maurer adds to UT Vols' quarterback competition
Will we have a transfer quarterback first? We can’t read Pruitt’s mind, and we’ve already seen that. Will Maurer give Jarrett a run? Will J.T. Shrout remain the 2nd stringer and come in to play if G gets hurt?
My main question remains though, will we see that transfer soon to come in, or no? What will spring practice bring us?

The fight to be the starting QB at UT is going to get really intense over the next few years.

That should be a fun battle to watch.

JG isn't going to give his starting position away without a serious fight and he has lots more real game knowledge and experience.

The other guys are serious about coming after him and taking that starting job away and 1 of them just might impress enough to get a real game chance to prove they can do it consistently.

How much better our O line can become will make a big difference when the real games start.

I can't wait for Spring practice to begin with all our new recruits hitting the field.

By Fall practice Fingers is going to be a really busy man, LOL!

VFL...GBO!!!

And I doubt that happens as I have a feeling jg is a very good practice player

I agree practice is "structured". "G" can do well in this environment. (I think) It's when the lights come on that he has trouble understanding what is call for. (maybe it's not enough time, however I am afraid it may be a little slow processing what he sees or doesn't see)

Did it shock us that we brung a transfer in last year? Would it shock us to the core, if we bring one in this year? The guy from Miami is available. I say that we will bring in one. Not sure though. We haven’t read Pruitt’s mind on an oc yet, what makes you think we won’t bring one in? No one can really tell right now.

The coaches seem to be very high on Shrout. Guarantano has to be the presumptive starter, but I wouldn't be shocked if Shrout got a chance to play. And if he really is the guy, then he could work his way into being the full-time starter. Maurer doesn't really expect to be the starter right away. He's just saying what all kids in his position say. He'll sit and learn and wait for his day to come.

So, were we supposed to expect him to say he wants to come in and develop for years and then play? Any player we take better be trying his damndest to get on the field as quickly as possible, if they arent they dont have the right attitude. The trick is getting guys like that, to devote to the team, when they arent the obviously best player at that particular time.

Not exactly a good way for an incoming freshman to endear himself to his teammates. Why not, keep that goal to yourself. Keep your head down, mouth shut, and just work harder than anyone else.

Would you expect Or want him to have any other attitude??
About 90% chance he redshirts ... JG is the starter ( as he should be ) and is working like crazy this offseason to get better. W a healthy and improved OL he will be much improved also.

I sure hope not, cause if anyone beats him out as a starter it means improvement
We may improve with him if the offensive line improves and we get a good OC that can help with QBs. We won’t know until next September.

The one thing that has to be on the coaches mind. JG gets sacked a lot. If JG goes down you go to a QB who not only has zero snaps in the SEC but zero snaps at the college level.

In all actuality players Want teammates who are striving to be the best at their position because that in turn makes the other players want to work just as hard as that other guy so that they too can be the best at their position. If anyone on the team had a problem with BM statement then they probably shouldn’t be at the university of Tennessee.

I dont see any of our QBs transferring. And unless Maurer is lights out, JG willbe the starter

I want the UT starting QB to be "lights out".
But to beat out Jarret,...you don't have to play lights out haha! Come on man!

He is at the bottom of returning QB's in the SEC.

Maurer is going to play this year! And I think in order to get to bowl game this year, it will need to happen sooner rather than later.

QB's should always redshirt, unless they are generational talents. Our QB depth is more important than you might think. It's amazing that JG wasn't seriously injured last year. If we don't get serious O-line improvement, we may have a second or third string QB starting multiple games. I know we have good OL recruits coming in, but it only takes one or two weak spots on the line to get exploited.
