2018 and 2019 Positional Breakdown

Here is my positional breakdown for 2018 and 2019 and its impact on recruiting for 2019. Let’s hear everyone’s thoughts.

DEFENSE:

DL is my biggest worry for 2019. It is already a big question mark for 2018, but for 2019 we are guaranteed to lose 4 contributors. (Tuttle, Phillips, Johnson, Bain) Hopefully Gooden, Bennett, Emerson, Butler and others can step up, but we have zero proven depth at DL past 2018. I'd personally like to see Bumphus moved to DL to help. I wish we were in on some more high profile recruits in 2019, hopefully after camps that board will begin to take shape.

If Bituli and Taylor ball out and leave early, we could have some depth issues at LB. If they stay, we will be looking good at LB for 2019, especially if we can get Peterson on campus. We will only be losing Kirkland, Kongbo, and Bates. If we can seal the deal with Henry and a guy like Bogle, we will be in great shape at LB moving forward.

CB is a position it appears like we are throwing every capable body we can at, hoping we can find 3-4 quality players. We are young at this position and I believe our current staff will coach up. Baring attrition, we should have the entire CB corps back for 2019. It appears like we are in on several solid CB’s for 2019, and I feel like CB should be a priority for 2019 recruiting.

I feel like Warrior is the most likely to leave early on this football team. If he leaves, we will loose Abernathy, Kelly, and Warrior. This is my second biggest area of concern on defense. Behind those three, we have no proven depth. Hopefully guys like Gray and Jackson will step up. This should be an area of concern for 2019 recruiting. Adding a guy like Beasley and possibly one more is vital.

OFFENSE:

Overall our offense is young. We only have two guaranteed losses on the offense, and that is Hall and Jennings.

QB is obviously our biggest question mark moving into 2018, hopefully it all begins to click for JG and we have a QB for 2019. It does not appear that we are in on any big time recruits for 2019, so 2020 will be pivotal moving forward for QB recruiting. Hopefully Shrout will produce, so our 2020 QB can a year or two to develop without having to be thrust into a starting role. Harrison Bailey??

I actually really like our RB corps moving forward for 2018 and 2019. Chandler and Jordan both appear to have solid potential, and I have high hopes for Banks. Baring attrition, we should have all our RB's back for 2019, discounting London. I feel like we still need to take a 2019 RB for depth. This is another position that I feel like the board will shape up after camps.

WR is another area of youth. However, I am not as confident for our future at this position as I feel the general consensus of this board is. I feel like we have several good WR's, but we are lacking true playmakers/gamechangers. Hopefully one of the younger guys we haven’t seen will surprise me and fill that role. I feel pretty similar about our TE position. I really like Keyton, Lowe, and Brown but we still need to add one more WR in 2019 to come in alongside Keyton.

OL is an area I am cautiously optimistic for 2018, but it may be the position I am most excited about for 2019 and beyond. If Trey Smith comes back playing at a high level, and others can step up, I expect a vast improvement for 2018. Combine only losing Hall after 2018 with hopefully adding Lampley, Morris, and possibly Wright in 2019, the future looks bright at OL.

I think Kirkland has 2 years left, doesn't he? If he balls out this year, he may leave but he can stay 2, I think.

Nice breakdown. Traditionally, teams will have someone step up, who may have been underachievers until their Jr. or Sr. years. We will need at least one or two to be that guy at every position group. LB could be great if Petersen comes in and earns early playing time, and IF, and to me that's a big if now, Kirkland plays up to his potential and doesn't lolly-gag his way through. Kongbo has been good in spurts, and he needs consistency.

I do think Guarantano is going to be better than advertised. He's got better coaching, and he definitely has the desire. He just has to learn to get RID of the ball quicker.

I'm concerned about the OL. With luck, meaning if Smith is healthy, and some of the veterans we DO have can be those guys I spoke of earlier, and step up, we could have at least a respectable offensive line.

I was NOT impressed with our DL in the spring game. Again, they play well in spurts, but were NOT consistent.

I think RB is going to be better than advertised too, provided that the OL is decent like I said.

DB's will be coached well, and I don't think we'll get torched nearly as many times with deep balls (i.e. Florida game!) as we did last year and year before last.

I believe you are correct, if his medical redshirt for last year is/was granted.

After this years disasters, seems anyone who was not almost a lock 1st rounder would not want to leave early. Especially if those who did this year and signed free agent contracts end up getting cut.

I think qb and wr will both improve this year and going forward. Last year was really on both as JG was slow releasing the ball as well as the receivers were slow getting open. If both can move a little faster, we should be fine. Add in Jennings coming back as well as our tight ends and we may have something. If our recovers can't get open quick enough, having Jennings and Callaway who can make 50/50 balls, tight ends that can catch, as well as running backs that can catch dump offs, the situation could be much better than we think.

Most will go Pro anytime there’s a chance for a payday. Who wouldn’t? Problem is they are listening to the wrong people telling them it’s possible.

If this happens, we'll win more than the "6" threshold neighborhood which most prognosticators have us at. Still a big IF, but would also mean improved OL play if QB/WR play is good.

I think it's possible. If they can follow some sort of check down system we'll be fine. Deep receiver>corner receiver>short reciever/tight end>dump off to running back and if nothing else scramble

The defense needs work on every level. Way too early to make any predictions. But I am a little optimistic that the defense will improve. Coaching out the idiocy of Butch will be difficult, especially in one year.

As for the offense, I am not worried about anything except the OL. JG finally has a QB coach so he willbe fine. RBs and WRs should be fine. Of course this is all contingent on my first point. If the OL can perform better than a HS unit, than things could be bettef than expected.

As for 2019? Waste of time to even speculate.

Good Work:

Technically Jennings is a RS Junior

Also, I believe we only have Chryst for one season.

Not too worried about JJ Peterson making it on campus. But it looks dicey for Lawless at this point.

For those of you having a cow because of Dline play in the Spring game, Clemson returns almost all their dominating wrecking crew and barely got anything going. The offenses in that game got cooking in the second half and both teams put up Clemson-type points. And that defense will be unreal again. Just sayin.

Regarding interior DL.

On current roster: Butler, Emerson, Bennett, Crosby.

Incoming 2018 DTs: Gooden, Harris

Incoming 2019 DTs: Middleton (JUCO), Cox (2019 FR).

That’s 8 DTs on the roster with 7 that will be Soohomores-Seniors. I feel better about that than when I originally read the first post.

I think the offense definitely is ahead of the defense talent and depth wise in 2019.

In the front 7, we really need to land some studs and have some young guys make big time progress if we're gonna be any good defensively in 2019. Our defensive staff has their work cut out for them.

can not afford any injuries on the OL .. even 1 could be disastrous

Only problem is we haven't seen anything from any of these guys. Crosby and Emerson were getting looks on the OL in the spring. There's been some rumblings that Crosby might stick on the OL.

Bennet and Butler have got to get bigger before they're gonna have any impact. Plenty of time to do that by 2019. If they can't crack the rotation and get some PT this year, that doesn't bode too well for them.

Harris and Garland have the right frame for DL, but neither were very highly regarded in HS. That doesn't mean too much, I guess, but I don't expect either to be game changers up front.



Our defensive staff needs to land a few studs in the 2019 class. They're gonna have to work their butts off to get our DL where it needs to be for 2019.

I would think both Butler and Emerson would be DE, leaving the DT cupboard for 2019 looking like: Bennett, Gooden, (maybe) Crosby, Middleton, Cox, Harris and Garland. Definitely need to get in on 3-4 more high profile d linemen.

I'm pretty sure they had Bennet at DE during the spring. That doesn't mean he couldn't slide inside eventually or situationally, though.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Emerson get some time at DT at least situationally. He's already around 300 lbs. Mincey is a guy who is built perfectly for us at DE, but could potentially grow into a guy who plays inside some.

Between Harris, Garland, and Crosby, I wouldn't be surprised to see 1-2 of those guys end up on the OL.


I think we have some guys who have the potential to be solid or good DEs for us in 2019. I'm not sure we have enough who can play inside right now, though.

I KNOW nothing but will wager to say one thing 'bout the team. The S&C coach is going to give us guys who won't be as easy to push around as last season. The technique coaching will result in at least noticeable improvement in both pass and run blocking. Of course opponents are going to improve too, some being better than their previous better. So where does this leave us? I KNOW nothing.

For me this is what is kinda crazy about this year,so many players we haven't seen much of can really step up and make this team better. I remember a lot of "booming" or "he"s a beast" remarks on signing day when they came here. Hopefully they take their rightful place in history and produce. If the coaching is as good as we think and they are dedicated to the team it can happen. If not,recruiting will be even more important than ever.
