2017 Vols will have the #1 or #2 ranked DEFENSE in the SEC

I certainly don't think they will change to options.

I think those staffs that both throw and run the football are salivating to get after this defense. That kid last night can't even pass the ball but was completing critical passes. Wait until the real passers go after this defense..

The game last night also reminds me of 2015 when we opened with Bowling Green and their QB threw for over 400 yards and they scored 30 points on us. The following week we had Baker Mayfield and Oklahoma coming to town and everyone was fearing he would throw for a thousands yards against us.

Guess what happened? The Oklahoma/Tennessee game in Knoxville was a defensive slugfest for 4 quarters and Oklahoma needed double OT to match the scoring output of Bowling Green.

You can never read too much into first games of a season. Typically the entire season doesn't turn out how we think it will after watching one game.

Georgia held a more experienced offensive Georgia Tech team to 226 yards rushing last year. Now they were only the # 5 defense in the SEC last year.

Strange how the # 2 defense in the SEC this year allowed a much less experienced GAT offense who was without their top 2 running backs 535 yards rushing.

I'm certainly glad you have lessened everyone's fears on what the future holds for the Vols the rest of this year.

Thank you.
That was last year, that wasn't this year. Marshall is their best QB since Joe Hamilton.

If you watched the game then I'm sure you saw our defensive lineman lining up 2-3 feet from the line of scrimmage in two point stances. I don't know if you know much about football but you should know that is not how defensive lineman typically line up.

There is nothing you can take away from that defensive performance against Georgia Tech and apply to the rest of the season. We are simply not going to play that way ever again cause we're not playing another triple option team.

Our first glimpse into what kind of defense we will be this year will be against Florida in 2 weeks. I expect you'll actually see our defensive lineman lining up on the line of scrimmage that game and they'll be in the more traditional three point ready to fire off into the offensive line rather than sitting back trying to protect their knees from being taken out.
It's also a new year with our defense and it still looks bad. We have been gashed for the last several games. Irrespective of a triple option and injuries last year, this is a concerning trend. If you don't recognize that, I'm not sure what else to say.

And every onw of those teams LOST. Whats your point?
I would bet my measly paycheck that in rach of those games GT had at least one 50+ yrd score.
Sometimes eating clock can work against you. If UT had scored the first two possessions, the pressure wouldve affected GT's game plan.
My point is, which should be fairly obvious, our run defense has been terrible. Everyone was talking about how GT is an anomaly; however, other teams held them to a respectable number in previous games.

How would you like to pay your debt since you lost the bet. I'll happily accept your measly check via cash. GT had zero runs of 50+ yards against KY or GA, but did against VA and VA Tech.

I expect lots of counters, draws, strech, and pitches.

I'll actually agree with D4H here (*inwardly shudders at the thought*)...

UT won't have to line up a yard away and worry about having the entire offensive line diving towards them. They won't have to worry about having to watch three different runners in the backfield every single play anymore. That level of mental focus can really take a toll. Teams will surely see the numbers and poor performance by some of the UT players...but there is plenty reason to think UT will be a lot better as we move along. Especially if we see the same level of play again that we saw from Bituli, Gaulden, Moseley, Warrior, and Taylor (On a side note...I actually thought Jumper was serviceable and should really show improvement this season).

Transitive property doesn't work in sports. Just because we struggled with the option more than Georgia did last year doesn't mean we'll struggle more than they did against conventional offenses.

That kind of thinking would have said last year at this time that if we can only score 13 points against App State in regulation, we won't score any against Florida. Now obviously that didn't happen.

That is why using the transitive property in sports is silly.

OK. I've been silly a lot

You win some and you lose some.

I was right on the money about Daniel Bituli though.

What is your opinion on all our 4/5 stars struggling with a team that has the following 4/5 stars on their roster?

4 star Step Durham - SR (started)

4 star Jordan Woods - R/FR (DNP)

4 star Gentry Bonds - True FR (DNP)

4 star Bruce Jordan-Swilling - True FR (Played)

4 star Kaleb Oliver - True FR (DNP)

4 star Tre Swilling - True FR (DNP)

They don't have any 5 stars.

you really just think it was all about a "weird offense"? No way it was they just out talented us???

D4H sounds a lot like a local sports writer who seems to always carry water for Jones and Company.

Until he melts down halfway through the season... throws in the towel... spouts nonsense and question why he ever followed Tennessee in the first place to only apologize the following week and will blame his meltdown on blood sugar or medication or something.
