You need a separate list for realistic goals... I am the eternal optimist but did not expect us to beat Alabama or make the college football playoff. I thought we would go 10-2 in the regular season. With 9-3 still possible; I don't think anyone can declare this season more than a small disappointment with a long shot chance to make up for it.
Yeah, sure, you make a good point.
I think every single year, our goal list should include these things:
-- Defend Neyland Stadium;
-- Win the East and get to Atlanta;
-- Win the SEC;
-- Get into the Playoffs;
-- Win the National Championship.
And then add to them based on circumstances (like break a losing streak, win a 100th meeting, or play in a special venue and win there).
Now, if either of the last two (playoffs and NC) were our ONLY goals, I'd agree that would be too much, many years, and unrealistic. But as part of a building-block series of sequential goals, there's no reason not to include them each and every season.
Sort of like the kid whose goals include: get all As in middle school, play football in high school, go to an Ivy League college, marry Miss America, be an astronaut, and then become the first Governor of Mars Colony 1. Nothing wrong with the most ambitious goals, as long as you focus on the immediate ones first and build from there. :good!:
I mean, consider it this way: our coaches and players are all thinking it in the back of their minds, anyway. Every time they're interviewed, they say, "you come to a place like Tennessee to win Championships." Butch says that frequently, and our players say it all the time. Might as well acknowledge it, embrace it, and build it into the fabric of our goal list.
But yes, I agree with your last point, emphatically. You don't define success or failure of every season the same way. And this season, 2016, should not be judged based on the playoffs or NC.
Go Vols!
