Does anyone remember that team and their defense? How fast and disruptive they were.
How they manhadled Oregon.
Turned over that high powered West Virginia offense.
Shutdown Bama in Tuscaloosa first go around.

They almost won the National title off of that defense alone.

Okay... I think team 120 defense can be that good. And our offense will be better than LSU'S that year.

Darrell Taylor and Rashaun Gaulden bring an extra dimension to our defense.

Derek Barnett
Cam Sutton
Jaylen Reeves Maybin are All-Americans

Justin Martin
Quarte Sapp
Kyle Phillips/Darrell Taylor/Austin Smith are similar to Sam Montgomery and Barkevious Mingo type edge players that made LSU soo good that year.

We don't have a Honey Badger/ but we have his production in our return game already and defensively our DBs arent afraid of anybody and they have made plays themselves.

Morris Claiborn
Tharold Simon
Tyran Mathiu
Eric Ried
Brandon Taylor were athletic, disruptive and could tackle.

I don't think we have what they had in that secondary, but we are not that far behind, and our Front 7 is special.

DkJr and Jaylen Reeves-Maybin is better than what they had at LB.
Barnett, KMac, Tuttle, Vereen
Phillips, Taylor, Smith are all physically gifted players that I would also put up thee with LSUs D-LINE.

Chemistry plus talent made that defense so special.

We are no where close to that defense. In 5 games last year our D was asked to sack up and win it, and they were only able to pull it off in 2 of them. Couldn't buy a 4th down stop against UF or OU. Our DT rotation is scary thin and K-Mac's endurance was laughable last season. Jumper is our back up LB, that kid wouldn't even be on special teams on 2011's LSU team. We gave up at least 21 points in 8 games. Barnett either takes plays off or G5 and FCS teams have better tackles than SEC teams. Bowling Green put up 550 yards and 30 points on us, Vandy put up 28 points. Slow down the great UT D conversation until they actually do something

The honey badger was one often most overrated SEC players I've ever seen. He was decent, but I distinctly remember DaRick Rogers throwing him around like a rag doll at the line of scrimmage.

That was last year.
And we got better as the year went on. That LSU defense gave up 400 passimg yards to West Virgina.
The game is geared to help offenses now.

Again its 2016. With more talent more experience and better coaching. We were a good defensive unit last year.

We were too nice to too many teams last year. Missing a chance to play in Atlanta for the SEC was a big let down for the whole program. They had a lead in every game and let some get away. Ifs and buts, pissed them off and they took it out against NU(inferior) in Tampa. The same drive will carry them to the 2016 season. They will have fun this year dominating other teams. 2016 let the games begin.

Go Vols!

I don't think it was so much us being nice as it was us pulling starters and seeing how bad our back ups were against some of the lesser teams we played. Our team is very top heavy and if we luck out with injuries, suspensions, and dismissals (something that hasn't happened yet under Butch) this can be a magical season. The truth is 2-3 projected starters will probably be out by the UF game

The list is so long on the mistakes that were made. And even with that we were so close. Now that CBJ has turned the team over to the Captains, I like our chances.

Go Vols!

I agree that we will be much better on defense this year. But I also believe we will see teams stack up against our run game and force us to throw the ball. We will be exposed if we are one dimensional again. I also do not believe that we have the talent at QB to win the SEC.

We will easily win the winnable games but struggle against the top of the SEC.

Hard to argue with that. Dobbs is quirky in his footwork when throwing the football, and he misses a lot because of that. Hes not very consistent.

But Dobbs is a great competitor, and I do think he will throw well enough to win big.

Jefferson and Lee werent good passers either for that 2011 LSU team. But-just like us- they had strong run game (Ware, Ford, etc)
Great special teams (kicker, punter were two of the best, Mathiu and Claiborne were outstanding returners, and everybody tackled well)
Lastly their defense was special.

Now that I think about it, we could be very similar to that team.

Team 120 could be not just good, but a Juggernaut if Dobbs gets better.

We need Shy to get healthy, we need our current DT's behind Shy and Kmac to step it up, or we'll need to slide our bigger DE's inside. For MLB we need one of our true freshmen, Bituli and Blakely, to step up, or Elliot Berry or Dillon Bates to show up.

I like Blakely a lot! I see him being number 2 behind DK.

Dillon and Elliot will show up on special teams

Tenn played well on the LOS against us in Tuscaloosa. They were good with their pressure and better that I expected with their run control. We had trouble getting behind the defense with the long ball. Can't say much about this year with Shoop. I'm sure it's going to be more about pressure and turnovers and getting off the field.

As a team for this season, you better hope your version of The Tide is at least as good in every phase of the game as last year's NC's. If not it's pretty easy to see where our team 120 has closed the gap on those 5 points and then some. See ya 3rd Saturday in October at Neyland, ya'll bring every &%$#kng yaller hammer you can find, you're gonna need 'em this year.

Our Defense is going to be very special this year. The amount of speed and talent for Shoop will make him a very happy DC.

No such thing as the same game. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have taken those knees on your 4-yard line.

Best defense Dobbs will see all year, including practice.

Haha. Perhaps. But if youre number 1 and we're number 2 in defense... then I could live with that.

Whats your defensive starting lineup? You all dont run a true 3-4 anymore do you?

We have quick hard hitting strikers EVERYWHERE on this defense.
Sutton is a hitter
Martin is physical
Gualden is physical
TK is a big body that can move and make plays.
JRM is physical

So and so on.

Barnett, Vereen, Phillips, Taylor, Lewis will bring it off the edge everyplay. Our DTs arent deep but they are effective because of how Stripling schemes.

I think we give up maybe 15 points a game this year.

Look... we've got some special guys on that side of the ball with a damn good DC.
Be excited! This defense will be better than anything Chavis fielded at UT. I really believe that..

#2 defense in the SEC is high cotton. Don't think the depth and linemen will let you do it. But doesn't mean you can't be effective. You will not equal LSU's defensive talent. They just have stupid talent down there in numbers and speed.

We run multiple defensive sets. 3 and 4 man lines. Often our Jack LB has their hand in the dirt. Tim Williams, Ryan Anderson on the edge. Rashaan Evans, Christian Miller can play both inside and on the edge. Inside LB Reuben Foster, Dion Hamilton.

Two 5* LB studs will be hard to keep off the field with Mack Wilson and particularly Ben Davis. These LBs you will see on the field.

Thats some serious talent at LB and edge players. And Bama has been stocked on the DL for years now.

LSU has some nice players down there for sure. But I dont think they will have as good as defense as we will this year. Plus theyre transitioning to the 3-4 base defense..

But Tennessee has drastically improved its D front over the past 2 years. We proved that to you all last year. Our DL coach is very good at scheming

Our depth is "good" at every level.

Barnett
Phillips
Mckienze
Tuttle
Taylor
Tkjr
Martin
Maybin
Kirkland

are all guys that were aggresively recruited by LSU. And theyre Vols.

I'm comfortable in saying we will be contending with you all for the top defense in the conference.

Ole Miss will be around, as will Florida and LSU. Mizzou always has a good d as well.

Bama has Elite talent, coaching. Tradition and the best competitive practices in the country.

Vols have experience great talent, and great coaching now. We will have the fastest defense in the conference.
