Does it worry anyone that schools like Texas (12 commits already!), OSU, UGA etc. seem to be getting early 2010 commits every week, while we only have 1, from an in-state player?

I know a lot of it has to do with their in-state talent.....when do you see most of our early commits starting to roll in? After the spring/summer camps probably?

Im not that worried. Not that many top tier guys have commited yet so we will still be in on the guys that we want. Its possible that they are getting committments because, in those states, many high school kids dream of going to the big in-state school like OSU or texas. We dont have that as much here in tennessee, since the state is so long and borders so many other states. It can seem very disconnected between east and west tennessee. I think we will be ok.

I really do trust the guys we have right now to reel on some good ones though. The fact is they are going after the top players in the nation. Im sure if they wanted some average recruits they could already have some.

I agree. I wasnt "worried" necessarily.....however, I expect to have some big name early commits by the August/September time frame. If we start out the season winning the games we should, it can do nothing but help immensely.

They tell the guys who want to go there that they have to commit before a certain date and stay committed in order to get their scholly to the school.

Texas uses the ultimatum approach for the most part; i.e. give early offers and pull them if not accepted before a whole lot of time passes. Also, Texas already had their junior day a couple weeks ago and pulled 7 commitments within 2 days of the event IIRC. Its just the way they roll, and it works because of their instate talent.

We'll be fine, especially considering our new staff is still catching up on the 2010 class. By the time NDS 2010 gets here... I predict we'll have 25 commitments in a top 5 class.

commitments can change, anyway. Nothing matters now, it matters on signing day. We should know that well after stealing a handful of recruits earlier this month.

Texas gets a ton of commits after their Junior day every year. There are a lot of Texas high school kids who grow up dreaming of playing at Texas. When there is an offer, they commit and stay too.

I agree. Texas gets the pick of the litter from a talent rich state. It would hard to compare our recruiting model against theirs.

Mack Brown likes to get his recruiting done early like XMAS shopping and he will 20-25 kids by the middle of July and he able to hang on them as well, not many will change their commitments.

Exactly, they don't compare. The state of Texas produces so much talent, if the kids that want to go there don't get on board early, they will get left off. Recruiting comes easy for them. They have 12 commits already, all from Texas. 2009 they signed 20 kids, 19 from TX. 2008, 20 commits, 19 from TX. It is that way for them every year.

I think we get Heaps to commit this summer and with him recruiting for us the rest will fall in to place. O-Line should be our focal point every day from now till next February in the recruiting wars.

Also, GA has been getting early commitments seems like every year. Give it time the 2010 class will come into picture and I feel it will be a very exciting one.

I really hope we can land a couple kids this weekend during junior day. That would be big. Recruiting can deal a lot with momentum. You pick up one kid, which helps you to get another, then another, so on and so forth. Next thing you know, you have a top teir class you can win a national title with.

Good post. I agree. This is like what happened with us last year when we picked up like 5 commits in one camp. Hopefully, this junior day will be big for us! Our future looks bright with the staff we have, but until I see results I won't be happy

Texas has a very good recruiting system in place for in state recruits. They get a jump start on everyone by offering juniors early and having them come to their camps. They like to get commits early so they can concentrate on the next year's class. It is easy when you have that many talented kids, in state, where as Tennessee has maybe 10 guys, statewide, that are coveted nationally.

I just hope we can roll in a few. You heard Jacques Smith say he thinks he can help recruiting some in state guys to go hear. Who knows, he could be the next russel shepherd when it comes to recruiting other guys. Shepherd should have won recruiter of the year. Not that assistant from LSU.
