I was thinking about a couple of UT teams that were really good but did not live up to their potential. The first one is the 1999 team which was better in almost every facet of the game especially on the defense side of the ball with Shaun Ellis, Raynoch, Goodrich, Deon Grant among others....just not in the win totals. The 2001 with Henderson and Haynsworth were just monsters up front but were not suppose to win the SEC East and got the HUGE break of plying florida at the end of the season. if that game is played in Sept I believe we get beat, but we were really tough in November.......then get beat by a back up QB who was mobile by LSU. So I wanted to know what you thought as the best Tennessee team between the two 1999 or 2001

1999 total defense allowed 14.8 points a game and had a lot of returning starters on their team. Losing to #2 florida and a fluke loss to Arkansas.
Offense averaged over 31 points a game. They had 9 draft picks in the first 5 rounds of next years NFL draft.

2001 total defense allowed over 19 points per game with not as much hype as the '99 team had. They lost to an unranked UGA team BUT also beat #14, #12 and #2 in the nation.
The offense averaged over 30 points a game. They had 10 draft picks in the first 7 sounds of next years NFL draft.

Both teams should have played for a natty. In 99 we had the ball at the end of the game against Florida with a chance to win and couldn't convert. Think there was a controversial pass interference no call that would have extended the drive. Even so we were the bcs #2 towards the end of the season but then blew the game with Arkansas. In 2001 we blew the ga game with the pooch kick decision but got back in the mix. No way we should have lost to lsu in the sec ch game. Love fulmer but great coaches find ways to win those games.

The 99 Florida loss still kills me. I was at the worst wedding reception I've ever seen watching on a 13 inch screen. 3rd and 3 and only about 10-15 yards from FG range and we can't get a first down on two bread and butter runs with Janal Lewis.

2001 team was better than the 1999 team.

1997 team was better than both.
You might be right. 97 had most of the 98 defense and Manning. 98 had the best defense and running game. 01 had the best WRs, TE and D-line.

That 2001 team may have been the best team on the hill

Unfortunately, CPF wasted quite a bit of talent as well and hung onto some coaches that had not performed as well as they should have. Quite frankly, he wasted the talent on the 97’, 99’, 01’, 05’, 07’ teams. On the flip side, the 96’, 98’, and 04’ teams over-performed expectations. The 99’ team and 01’ teams were much more talented than the 98’ team imho.

01 and it's not even close in my book

That’s the best team in UT team that I have ever seen but they lost two close games in Georgia and LSU in the SECCG which cost them a shot a playing for it all against Miami in the Rose Bowl. Unfortunately, that’s the last time that UT was a serious title contender.

How exactly was the '99 team much more talented than the '98 team? The '98 team had Al Wilson, Peerless Price, Jeff Hall, Shawn Bryson and the '99 team didn't. Who did the '99 team put into those spots? They would all have to be "much more talented" than those four for the argument to have any value.

The 1995-1996 teams were better than the 1999 and 2001 teams.

Y’all can’t be serious?? The 99’ roster had the following contributors: Tee Martin, Donte Stallworth, Cosey Coleman, Chad Clifton, Fred Weary, Deon Grant, Andre Lott, Raynoch Thompson, Eric Westmoreland, Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, Dwayne Goodrich, Cedric Wilson, and John Henderson

Everyone agrees that the 97 team was better than probably all teams 98-2001. So the 99 team had only lost al Wilson which was HUGE and peerless price most of the team was the same.
