Anyone who has watched the vols knows that they are a completely different team from first half to second half in every game so far. The only real exception being that they turned it on a bit early against VT. So I thought it would be interesting to look at numbers.

Points allowed by half:
13 - 0
14 - 10 (garbage time td)
12 - 7
21 - 7
----------
60 - 24

Points scored by quarter:
3 - 0 - 3 - 7 - 7
0 - 24 - 7 - 14
7 - 7 - 7 - 7
0 - 3 - 14 - 21
---------------------------------
10 - 34 - 31 - 49
---------------------------------
44 - 80 (by half)

Finding stats broken down by quarter/half is easy for scoring but harder for other categories. Anyone have any other numbers they could share?

I broke down the quarter-by-quarter numbers earlier this morning, and the contrasts are startling. I'd be surprised if any other team in the nation shows this degree of imbalance -- both offensively & defensively -- from one quarter or half to the next.

UT/Opp passing offense
Q1: 14-32-137-1 TD-1 INT...20-38-238-2
Q2: 17-30-173-2-2...21-33-276-2
Q3: 16-25-218-3-1...12-20-97-1-1
Q4: 13-20-266-4-1 (note: Dobbs had 0 Q4 TD passes last season)...27-42-233-1-1

UT/Opp rushing offense
Q1: 39-143-0 TDs...40-243-2
Q2: 38-177-2...40-122-1
Q3: 47-166-1...35-99-0
Q4: 47-246-3...33-99-1

UT/Opp total offense
Q1: 71-280-1 TD (3.94 ypp)...78-481-4 (6.17 ypp)
Q2: 68-350-4 (5.15 ypp)...73-398-3 (5.45 ypp)
Q3: 72-384-4 (5.33 ypp)...55-196-1 (3.56 ypp)
Q4: 67-512-7 (7.64 ypp)...75-332-2 (4.43 ypp)

UT/Opp YPP differential
Q1: -2.23 ypp
Q2: -0.30 ypp
Q3: +1.77 ypp
Q4: +3.21 ypp

Quite literally, we've been one of the nation's worst football teams in the 1st quarter and one of the very best in the 4th.

If our offense performed for a whole game like it has in Q1, we'd rank 127th nationally in yards per play. But if we played a whole game offensively like we have in Q4, we'd be 5th in yards per play.

Conversely, if our defense extended its Q1 performance for a whole game, we'd rank 104th in yards per play allowed while our Q3 defense across a full game would rank 3rd...crazy!
